For thr last few months since I moved to #Goa, I have been focusing on my practise as a fine artist. After being a teaching assistant during my time at @risd1877 and visiting faculty at @isdimumbai there after, my love for teaching didn't leave me, just my medium evolved and continues to... With that in mind I'm happy to announce my 1st workshop in collaboration with @vaayuvision @prana.goa Water teaches you to let go of control. Painting with watercolor is a practise in patience and presence of mind. What better way to learn to paint with water than on the beach? The Earth is 70% water and so are we! The existance of shadows is only possible in the presence of light. In the last 6 months I've been paying attention to my #shadows. I may seem super confident but there are parts of me that are scared, insecure and innocent. Parts that have been touched in ways that have had positive and negative impacts on my behaviour and perception of self. To love oneself unconditionally, it is important to embrace all the various parts of oneself. That cannot be done without acknowledging all the various parts of oneself. I often ignored my shadows and what they were trying to show me... A few moons ago I realised that without accepting, embracing and confronting my shadows, I cannot step into my light... And so it began, A cleanse, A journey, A process... Walking into the new year with my best friend Rolland @hobomango from college @risd1877. Having a healthy support system is important for a healthy human existence. We are social animals after all. For the last 12 years, Rolland and I have been consistently present in each other's lives knowing that we have a home in each other for as long as we live. A comfort that let's anxieties in my heart rest and breathe for a little while. I've been quite silent on my social media over the last few months because I've been focusing on my relationship with myself and building on the relationships with people who give as much importance to building on the relationship they have with me. Focusing on health, not just the physical but also the mental that takes time, patience and care. Most #Trans people have a difficult, abusive or non existant relationship with their families. 'When one doesn't know what a healthy support system look like, how is one to create their own?' For those who have these support systems in place, I wish you all the wisdom to NOT take them for granted, cherish them, nurture them, grow them. For those who are building these support systems, I wish you all the ability to choose what feels unfamiliar, to allow yourself to trust your intuition and not your habit. Over the last few months I have been quite silent. Observing, listening more and talking, expressing less often. I packed up my life in Mumbai and moved to #Goa in July this year because I needed to pay attention to my health. Mental and physical. To be responsive and not reactive was the goal I set for myself. My piece titled - 'माझ्या वेदनांचे मृत्यू ' meaning, 'The death of my agonies' is my response to my reality. Inside and outside. In times where things feel as shaky as they have, in times where having the ability to continue breathing healthy air is a privilege, my opinions on any matter seem pointless and unimportant. 'So what is important then?', I asked myself. Hope is important. Joy is important. Or atleast that's what my overwhelmed mind could come up with. So in my way, holding my truth up as a mirror to my actions, I write, I make, I perform. Softly, quietly yet surely. Listening, observing, collecting along the way... This is the 2nd time I've performed this piece. It is about ownership of oneself and one's body. It is the first piece I have written and performed in Marathi, my mother tongue. After performing my piece titled ' माझ्या वेधनांचे मृत्यू ' i.e. ' The death of my dysphoria', my first piece in #Marathi. The catharsis I personally felt is something that was a shared experience of all the people involved in the execution of #TheDeathGala. This is a drawing I made for my dear sister @glorious_luna who has always with open arms and unconditional generosity brought people who share fundamental values of taking up space and celebrating one's existence. You don't know a lot of things little one, but the one thing you know is that you are you. My vocabulary isn't strong enough in any language to describe all that I have learnt with @yunisverse and @hobomango. I have known both these individuals for the last decade. We met as teenagers and have grown into adults together... at least we hope we have! Both of them came to see me from #LA. 3 of us had not shared space in 8 years. I have been nominated for the category ' #lgbtq🌈 voice of the year' at the #cosmoindiabloggerawards2022 @cosmoindia. The acknowledgement for my hard work is important and satisfying. Last night, at the opening dinner, I wore this lovely #purple outfit by @fkns_by_narendrakumar. The designer @narendra_kumar_bespoke created a short film for this particular collection and I had the opportunity to wear most of the pieces from this collection when I played the lead character in this short film called '2+2=5.' It was only fitting to wear my favourite pieces from this collection to an award ceremony. To share space with so many creatives and people of influence, is kind of strange after what we have gone through as humans dealing with a pandemic. To be present, to take up space, to know in my heart that I deserve to exist as me and nothing else, while the definition of what it means to exist as me keeps changing, is not easy. About loss, grief, denial and strength. Few years ago my biological parents disowned me for being unapologetic in my being and presentation. To be specific they disowned me after seeing a picture of my butt that I consentually posted on @instagram to talk about how my butt is a trans butt and not a 'woman's butt'. It's going to be two years now, but little did I know at the time that I would be denied information about the loss of my family members. I also didn't realise that I would be put in a position to have to explain to everyone that I have been disowned, because claiming me as their child never stopped for them publically but being dishonest of my abandonment. When us trans people claim ourselves unapologetically there are repercussions. The kind we do not imagine. I couldn't sleep well on 30th Night. I had 3 panic attacks and was restless. In the morning I spoke with my #therapist @astralsoul21 and they helped me center myself and trust that I will get through it. I spent the day looking after myself and doing things that make me happy. Which included hugging my sister for long periods of time, crying (crying is good, unclogs your tear glads and makes your vision clearer) till i didn't have any tears left to shed anymore, then washing my face and using my puffy eyes as part of my make up experiments for the day! #Makeup always makes me feel better. It is an important part of my self expression and gender presentation. This new year, #2022 I am dedicated to working fiercely on myself even more. To push myself to achieve my dreams and ambitions. #Mentor #Memory dedicated to my dear @nikhil.chopra.artist In 2009 I had the privilege to accompany my father to @venice.art.biennale. For the first time in my life, at the age of 16 I was exposed to an extreme amount of creative practises from around the world. Nikhil was one of the artists from India and his 48 hour performance was the 1st performance I was witness to in which I saw a cis-man transform into a feminine woman. In 2018, Nikhil invited me to be an artist in residence at @hh_artspaces Goa. In my time there, I was mentored by Nikhil and @madsmaddymadhavi. Both of them pushed me to perform and find the performer in me. At the end of the residency I performed a 3hr solo performance piece called 'Bit by Bit' it was performed 3 months before I was launched as India's 1st performing drag king. My image in this picture is next to Nikhil's image from one of his previous performances. This image is captured by the amazing @bharatsikkastudio in Nikhil's studio in Goa. Few weeks ago, Bharat posted this image in his stories and I was touched to know that an image of me exists in Nikhil's studio. Thank you for capturing this beautiful moment Bharat. #DealingWithDysphoria Since the last few weeks my dysphoria is manifesting in the form of #migraines and physical exhaustion. The positive thing is that I have the vocabulary to talk to myself and figure out what is going on and how to deal with it. Thanks to the internet and the openness with with my fellow #trans #humans I know nothing is 'wrong' with me. In a world that makes anyone who is different feel wrong in themselves, it is not surprising that so many people deal with #dysphoria and #dysmorphia amoung other challenges in life. Creating a reality around me that is nurturing and supportive is the reason why I know I am going to be okay. I know I can count on myself and my abilities and overcome self-doubt everyday. But, on some days, laying in bed with my child, Duke is the most satisfying and healing experience ever! Taking time off does not mean that you aren't working hard enough, it just means that you are recharging yourself. #GenderEuphoria #AboutLastNight Last night I was spending time with my dear friend @zubairkalsia (except for images 2 and 3, he clicked all the images in this post). I always wondered how Zubair saw me, I say that because Zubair was born with eyes that see the world differently than most people. The way you captured my light last night is extremely affirming. I realise, more and more that I decide what #trans #NonBinary #genderfluid means to me. I express it and own it. The insecurity caused by the dysphoria is leaving me. I have been glowing lately. It's because I have been looking after myself. I eat well, sleep well, take care of my skin, workout. Ofcourse I have bad days too but I wake up the next day with a spirit that wants to keep going. #GenderDysphoria is something that I have struggles with for many years now but it's only in the last few months have I been experiencing gender euphoria. My breasts don't feel like they aren't part of my body anymore. I have found a way to mold my body into a silhouette that I identify with at that time. I have also found comfort in my biology. I work hard to keep my body strong and safe. Thanks to my therapist @astralsoul21(A) who also happens to be non-binary who has helped me understand my trauma. I am steadily leaving my self doubt and shame behind... And in these pictures Zubair captured just that. Hello World! Here is my #butt. Let me say that again... Here is MY butt. Last year after @thegigglypufff created an illustration of me for the @rollingstonein cover, we both were so happy with the results we wanted to create more imagery together. Sahana asked me to send her some images I created to make illustrations with. I sent her this image of me in #drag with my butt out. The post I had made last year with these images resulted in a confrontation that my biological parents had with me, where they told me that they could not deal with me and did not want to be part of my life anymore. Ever since I started menstruating, showing my skin seemed to bother everybody around me. Eventually it started to bother me and it didn't help that I was a #trans #nonbinary #genderfluid person with #genderdysphoria. As an adult, I claimed by body and presented it the way I saw fit but a 'toned down version' of me would have been more acceptable to my biological parents. I don't deny that they tried to 'tolarate' me, but ever so often, they would explode and there would be conflict rooted in controlling my actions, my behaviour, my choices, who my friends were, basically my life. Control and unconditional love don't live together. They can't, they are dysfunctional together. I confused tolerance for acceptance and felt like the conflict would be over. But everytime I pushed boundaries, I dealt with emotional abuse. It's taken a lot of therapy and support from my chosen family for me to not only become emotionally stable but also to overcome homelessness during the first wave due to lack of opportunities for artists and disownment from my biological parents. Today, Sahana posted this illustration of the same image that was their last straw. The cold hard truth is, they were ashamed and they could not understand the need to own oneself the way I do. I was angry for a long time but now I can only empathise with them and feel sorry for the fact that they never learned to own themselves, probably never will. Not fully. On the other hand I have never been more in peace with myself than I am now because I chose to love myself unconditionally. I am proud of being ME.
I still remember the first time my father bought designer linen shirts, they were designed by @narendra_kumar_bespoke. I was a kid, but I remember my father distinctly pointing out how the placement of the buttons was different from all his other shirts (none of them were designer shirts). I never forgot this name, Narendra Kumar. In 2018, I found myself on a seat at the table with Narendra Kumar who goes by Nari. When we spoke and I instantly felt a connection to the creative energy he carries with him. Soon after that he invited me to his studio. When we spoke at his studio I learnt about his life, his process and his new label (at the time) called @fkns_by_narendrakumar. He wanted to collaborate with me on a #fashionfilm. We met several times after that but both our lives went on and our timing didn't match. Last month I bumped into Nari after couple of years and a few days later he asked me to collaborate with him again. This time, our timings matched! Within a few days of having our conversation I found myself in Bombay ready to shoot with him. '2+2=5' premiered at @timesfashionweek on 16th October 2021. It was shown on a large screen right before his fashion show started. I wasn't in the room but my larger than life presence was. Humbled by this experience Nari. Thanks for existing 🌈💗🌈. Proud to present '2+2=5' ! This collaboration with @fkns_by_narendrakumar and @dcmbrfilms allowed me to play the #lead for the 1st time. When I heard the story line, inspiration and the fact that an entire collection was created from the same inspiration that this script is, I wasnt just interested but I identified with the lead character and asked to be the lead. Inspired from the books 'Brave New World' and '1984' this short film confronts ideas of control, power, appearance, indulgence, comfort and the idea of gender to name a few. In this age, how do we recognize what is real? Is the information you have really REAL? Are you free to speak and live your truth? Or are you SHEEP with blinders on? I don't know how we managed to shoot this in just 1 day! Try figuring out how many costume changes this involved ! Haha! #Breasts #Bound #Unbound I am photographing myself after a long time. In this time, I have gone back to my natural hair color, lost some weight and have been working on embracing my beautiful bosoms. Beautiful bosoms... It's a little strange for me to use that term to refer to what I felt only comfortable calling my #chest. #DealingWithDysphoria and #Dysmorphia had gotten a lot easier when I was able to identify the difference between them (I am not a mental health professional and hence do not take it upon myself to define these terms. Growing up in #Bombay, I remember feeling like there was something wrong with dark lips. I have always had dark lips. As I grew older I didn't realise when I subconsciously overcame this notion. A lot of notions about our appearance is the result of societal expectations and norms. Have you stopped to think, ' Who benefits from our insecurities?' ' How do I feel about myself when I do not celebrate myself?'
