In this 2 the choppy water is behind the figure. Her back is to the emotional turbulence. A helper gallops in, reminding her of her own power and that help is on the way. Is that Death creeping up in the 10 of Swords? That figure is not getting up anytime soon. Her worst fears are coming true. If I can go into the shadows of my own subconscious and look my fears straight in they eye - them I grow more powerful. After all, in the movies the monster is the scariest before it shows it’s face. Like a lot of non fiction #illustration, The American West (1962) challenged Ed to create large detailed scenes. (see bottom right) To fit everything into an 8x20 inch spread, it means making a choice, draw the scene at 4x the size, which has the disadvantage of, when reduced for the final book spread size, the line weight will also be reduced, which can make the art look too different from the rest of the book art. The other way, as Ed chooses here, is to devise a way to draw things like #animals and #people, as small and simply as the medium will allow. In this case - #pen and #ink. This can be done impressionistically, merely suggesting the shapes, or as Ed does in this book, actually draw everything, but in ever simpler, abstract ways. From the detailed portraits of figures such as General Custer (previous post) to these eloquent, even geometric reductions. Ed rarely depicted death in any of his books. It’s uncommon in children’s books anyway. In The American West (1962) there is a white cowboy and Native American fight scene. It is depicted in a way that you have to look hard to see. (There is even a hint of a dead horse.) the white man being shot off his feet is dramatic in a comic book way. Still holding a revolver. The line work is especially fluid and not only conveys movement, but almost blend into the mayhem of the moment. Also in the same scene, all illustrators will know the problem of how to draw figures at different distances/sizes in one image and make it look natural. Ed chooses to go abstract with geometric people reminiscent of his coming drawing books. Back when Ed’s book career was just beginning, in 1962, he illustrated non fiction by other authors. The American West is an interesting example of this. Many aspects of Ed’s illustration technique, his recent work in advertising, and the culture of the times in which he worked are reflected here. In this first post have a look at the simple pen and wash he is using. This book would be considered a two color, making it much less expensive to produce than full, or 4 color printing. Also, using a solid pen line for one color, and a loose but expertly applied wash layer as the second color, there were no registration issues, where one color must align perfectly with another. This assured a crisp, clean image no matter how sloppy the printing. Simple and crude by todays computer standards, but the book still looks cleaner than most books today. Hardcover books are becoming scarce. In Europe, almost unheard of. And a hardcover book with a separate “dust jacket”, even more rare. And a unique design for the cloth hardcover… well, those days are almost gone. Books in the 60’s would have the loose, paper dust jacket 4colour offset printed as the real cover, and the inner hard cover wrapped in coloured paper or fabric, then letterpress printed with a minimalist version of the dust jacket. Here you see the inner and outer jackets for Punch and Judy, as well as Ed’s first book, The Wing on a Flea. Rosebud. Ed’s 1960’s picture book, would not be published today. It’s about a five & ten turtle. They used to sell little turtles from a tank in corner shops like Woolworths. They would paint a design on the shell to make it a more attractive trinket. Turtles breath through their shells, so it’s no longer done. Ed’s book, Rosebud, was done in his period of pre-separated art. The process would be similar to preparing a silkscreen print. He had the four process colours to work with. Here created with a “rubylith” with added pen details. Rubylith are sheets of Mylar(clear plastic sheets) with a soft, transparent red (ruby) coating, that is cut with a very sharp knife, and peeled away, to make a mask or stencil for each color. The distinctive quality of the lines is a result of the way the knife glides as it cuts. Ed was literally “drawing” with a knife. But he did remember how, one day, as a child, being shown how to make a boat by drawing shapes. And watching, in wonder. But most importantly, REMEMBERING how that felt. Today in the art room . . . Kindergartners combed the lion’s mane. We used simple shape to draw the lions face in oil pastel. Then worked on our brush strokes from the face to the edge of the paper. Growing up we have all heard the famous Aesop's Ant and the Grasshopper and other moral stories. The lesson is straightforward- work hard all summer so you can survive winter. The singing and dancing Grasshopper is considered to be lazy and not as hard working as the Ant. This poem I came accorss is along the similar lines... Grasshoppers three, a-fiddling went Hey ho never be still, they laid no money towards their rent But all day long with elbows bent, They fiddled a tune called 'rilloby rilloby' Fiddled a tune called 'rilloby,rill' The Ant the Grasshopper by Rebecca Emberley, illustrated by Rebecca Emberly is a playful version of the original tale. To make the ant's load lighter and lift her spirits up the Grasshopper plays for the Ant along with his band. Accompanied by the band of insects playing along she got home and got through the hard day of work. 'You made my day, what can I do for you?' Grasshopper replied 'it gets hot at the boulevard and we want to catch a break' the Ant said why don't you come down to the colony and play for us. The Grasshopper band found its audience and the Ants were happy everyday listening to music. Check out the collage artwork we did while reading the book. Since Ed Emberley is new to Instagram, here is his first book, The Wing On A Flea - A book about shapes, published in 1961, by Little, Brown & Company. Back then, Little Brown was located in an old building next to the gold domed statehouse on historic Beacon Hill in Boston. Now it’s a part of a French publishing empire based in a New York tower. Ed lived in Beverly, Massachusetts then, before moving just a few miles away the next year to his present home in Ipswich.
