Is there such a thing as “pure altruism”? Psychological egoism denies that altruism is ever pure. Whenever we act, self-interest is part of the motivation equation; when we seek to benefit others, it’s at least partly to advance our own good. On paper, effective altruists are some of the most selfless people alive, but do even these people act solely for the benefit of others? In Singer’s “The Most Good You Can Do”, he shares the stories of several effective altruists and a common thread emerges — they don’t see what they’re doing as a sacrifice. This raises the question of whether these people are moral exemplars, or just beneficiaries of a particular disposition; namely, they derive immense pleasure from acts of charity and would feel guilty living differently, an emotional burden they’d prefer to avoid. Singer also shares research suggesting that giving promotes happiness. One data point relates to non-directed organ donors. According to Roff, “every study of live kidney donors … has reported enhanced self-esteem.” Keshen states that self-esteem is an important component of happiness, and a reasonable person can’t have self-esteem while ignoring the interests of others whose well-being they recognize as being equally important to their own. Similarly, Hellenistic philosophies, such as Stoicism, often claim that virtue is the path to “eudaimonia”; that is, acting justly and generously is essential to a flourishing, happy life. Some may sneer at the tainted idea of promoting the well-being of others to promote your own well-being. Indeed, if aliens came to Earth, they may see the most altruistic among us as morally inert — just creatures enamored with stroking their own ego. Nevertheless, a good deed is a good deed, irrespective of the underlying motivation, which we can never be sure of, anyway. As Singer proposes, if we want to encourage people to do the most good, we shouldn’t focus on whether what they’re doing involves a sacrifice and makes them less happy. We should focus on whether what makes them happy involves increasing the well-being of others.

Life lesson...I am working on it #workinprogress . There are days when common sense is not so common and the level of frustration is excessive. It is in those moments when I remind myself to just breathe and practice the art of acceptance. Acceptance is taking things as they are, not as I want them to be #egoism. This learned skill set gives me #perspective, #grace and #personalpeace. Situations, even the most painful ones, are presented exactly how they are supposed to be and your duty and mine is to see it for what it is, learn from it and grow. It should be evident that when we talk about “self-interest,” we cannot speak of objectivity. What may be in your self-interest could also very well be something that would keep me from something in my self-interest. This makes the blanket statement “self-interest and individualism are a tenet for colonization” a simplistic view of what self-interest is and avoids the question of whose interest it is that we’re talking about. As an Indigenous person who takes a strong stance against assimilation, colonialism, and capitalism, it is certainly not in my interest to maintain those structures. Individualism is the idea that you and your desires are important. Egoism implies this and also states that one ought to act on behalf of oneself to realize desires. As Indigenous people, what could we use more than self-confidence? We need to know that we as individuals, and as an Indigenous people, matter. For centuries we’ve been beaten down, physically and psychologically. We’ve been oppressed by Power for so long that we’re convinced that we don’t matter, that we’re worthless, that we’re savages: less than human and unfit for society. The psychological effects of colonization have been studied, dissected, and proven to result in both internal and external self-hatred. Some of us have accepted this; we abuse ourselves and each other. Or we self-medicate to numb ourselves from the pain. Some of us assimilate to be recognized by our oppressors, to feel a sense of self-worth. I for one want to appease to no one. I want to know that I matter to me, not to the society that denies me my desires, keeps me from my freedom: a society responsible for all of the damage done to Indigenous people worldwide. One thing that I do see at powwows all across the continent are bumper stickers and clothing expressing “Native Pride” This is something that my elders have said since as far back as I can remember. “Be proud of who and what you are.” If we were to take on this pride and understand that we do matter, to us, and start acting in our self-interest, it would mean war against those who stand in our way, who keep us from our freedom. I grew up privileged enough that I was able to spend a lot of my childhood outside in the woods, but I know so so many that do not and will not have the same opportunities. Every one, kids and adults alike, should have free green spaces to explore and enjoy. Nature is healing to the soul.

Stirner’s principle critique of socialism and communism as they existed in his day was that they ignored the individual; they aimed to hand ownership over to the abstraction society, which meant that no existing person actually owned anything. Authoritarian socialism cures the ills of free competition (which Stirner correctly noted was not free) by alienating everything from everyone. This sort of communism was based on Community, on Society with a capital S, not on the union that Stirner desired. A communism that places possessions into the hands of a phantom while leaving nothing for the individual can not really be much more than a new tyranny. Anarcho-communism can benefit from these egoistic insights since they serve as a reminder that communism isn’t sought for its own sake, but as a means to guarantee each unique individual self-enjoyment and self-actualization. Understanding Stirner’s union of egoists is crucial to understanding his ideas concerning insurrection and how they can be reconciled with more mainstream anarchist views of revolution.
