Totally crackers and cheese I let Mabel and Billy out of their little house and fed them some food. It was sunny but the wind was chilled. Brian did the feeding and I did a few chores and got the kettle going on the Rayburn for our guests would be arriving soon. On their arrival Billy was scooped up and greeted. “Boy it’s a long time since I’ve done this” as he cradled the lamb in his arms in a familiar manner. Into the kitchen we went as some drizzle threatened to join the cold breeze. Our one visitor quickly found his old familiar joy of resting against the warmth of the Rayburn. We had tea and cake and talked about all topics that could be crammed into time. Folklore, farming, Ireland, history, drystone walling, people and we felt like there still so much more to discuss. Brian so enjoyed the newly met companions conversations full of interest; we commented after they left how fascinating people are when you take time to learn more. That other people’s stories only enhance and make life all that more meaningful. Then they left with promise of returning, sitting in their wake on the dresser was a gift of cheeses and wine. This was something we were going to enjoy together and bought some crackers later in town. We deserved a bit of time with cheese and chatter, so a big thank you. Walter was at the pond enjoying the delight of apples. A Robin has taken to wooing himself and checking out this reflection is not a threat. Most of the images are not in focus of him because he’s bouncing around but you can definitely pick up his attitude. Lots of litter in the wood why leave it like this? 📍 Cabon Coch Reservoir 📍 Drygarn (641m) The drive to Elan Valley is so picturesque, stopping numerous times to view the Cabon Coch reservoir. The ascent to Drygarn was indeed alarming as you head deep into the Cambrian Mountains. The last day of our trip ended in the Elan Valley and we were fortunate enough to see the magnificent Claerwen Dam overflowing with water. Abbie always says this area is her favorite place in the world and I can see why. We had a long drive back home but it's definitely on the list to return to.
The farmhouse kitchen How many stories this kitchen could tell over the years. I have the stories of my husband growing up with his family and then our own family. Everything happens here. The warmest room in the house for generations of tenants; back to the open range. In fact there is a time capsule buried in the old bread oven hidden behind the fake walls. The old dresser came from Noyadd fach and has a whole story of its own. I think you will agree that Mabel and Billy have found their own little bit of home in here. Many lambs and creatures have taken shelter here and been brought to health. In the coldest of winter we have huddles around the heat. I will think the next generation will see it looking very different. Though it will always be the hub of this home. I have deliberately chosen to keep it as original because I have fond memories of it. Sleeping by the roaring solid fuel Rayburn and in a time of simplicity. We have no electric kettle, microwave or dishwasher and I have no interest. Though the m wavering on an air fryer as being a cleaner way to cook. 📍The Elan Valley, Wales 🏴 Sadly this ended up being the last stop on what turned out to be a very short trip to wales as our van decided to break down 🤦♀️ We did have a lovely wander around the very picturesque dams though before spending the night in the visitor centre car park (you are not allowed to stay here but we had no choice 😂) The next day we were picked up and taken all the way back to dorset on the recovery truck. That’s about a wrap Think we have about come to the end of lambing. We have been lucky in the most even it all kicking off in the bad conditions presented by the weather. No ewes to the vet and nothing but a few lambs were lost. The last few days were glorious and watching lambs flat out sunning on the fields was so lovely. Energy burst 💥 encouraging frolicking and playing about the ground. Please a little more. 🙏 There is a peace at the moment and it’s wonderful. Today I will visit Walter at the pond and check a few trail cameras and will sit down to write a few lines about the folklore of the valley. It’s a good place to start my brain at the moment. Thank you for your support yesterday and it has helped to move things forward taking account of things and not pretending it’s always perfect x Much love to my very sweet Instagram “team” and I’ll hopefully be bagging up some cow 💩for the lovely @mr.hutch03 for his rhubarb/taties and what ever he has planned. Sometimes it’s Ok just to stop and let it go It’s been an emotional week. Farming isn’t always easy. I’m a person who looks for the special moments and hold them in a little place for a rainy day. That makes me laugh there’s been 9 months of rainy days. Keeping motivated and spirited when a bit of bad luck starts to pile up can rock the best of those that see through rose tinted glasses . Silly things like broken fences, flat tyres, cow muck building up, feeling poorly, worries over the way things are going and I suppose building up to the saying goodbye of a an old friend coming to fruition today. We knew it had to come and today we said goodbye to Judy’s daughter mist. So dignified and stress free she drifted off into sleep in the back of the Land Rover with a gentle breeze in her coat, the sun warming her tired body and the sound of the hill and bleating sheep lulling her into peace and taking away the aches and pains from working hard for us for so long. Born here until her last day. Never leaving the farm and being able to have her last moments where she was most happy. The vets we have are amazing it has to be said. We let at last the cattle out of the shed to enjoy at long last the sun on their backs once more. The young ones played with the new calves and the rhos seemed so overjoyed to have them back. The housemartins and swallows would be feeding on the invertebrates that come with poop. It maybe the last time we witness this delight for a while as our cattle will be sold in the autumn which has been a difficult decision. Especially with my beautiful new fairy cow. But the rest will be welcome and Brian and I can maybe do a few things together. Little Billy and Mable spent the day sitting on the doorstep enjoying the sun and they made me smile when I came home from a beautiful sunny afternoon with that tinge of sadness. This sun has me thinking of planting rhubarb and cleaning the tiny garden pond. It was hugely successful - some of the birds we surveyed included redstart, pied flycatcher, long-tailed tit, siskin, blue tit, great tit, treecreeper, goldcrest, red kite, buzzard and raven. Outside of the survey site we also had the pleasure of seeing a kestrel, a cormorant and two male mandarin ducks. #earthday an upland celebration I feel much of my time is spent defending the place the uplands has in the precious world we live. This afternoon saw Brian myself and peatland officer Iona up on the hill. We have been successful in receiving grant for the valley to improve and manage some habitats. One of those projects is to see how farmers can do some practical smaller scale restoration using materials on farm. We are hoping to use baled molinia and sheep wool to create pools and hold back erosion around some old turf pits. Our neighbour is also part of the project and looking to fill in an old peat drain. So if anyone is looking for some days out helping in the autumn/winter to trial some techniques and learn a bit about the upland vegetation just let me know. Today we came across an emperor moth male in the dry whispy dead molinia. There were absolutely hundreds of drinker moth caterpillars. These are the main food for the cuckoo that has just arrived. The skylarks danced in the sky and pipits scuttled on the ground; we embraced the beauty of the uplands. What a place to stand and just love the planet we live on and all the diversity that makes it up. From the smallest spiders running across the ground to mighty humpback whales in the deepest oceans. I am certain most of my Instagram connections (who are all I believe) connecting in some way to the beauty of Earth, today and most days. Travel along West Street passing the local shops and public houses, carry on towards Rhayader Bridge passing Clive Powell Bike Sales, Repair and Hire on the way. Your journey will descend down a small hill, you will notice Mid Wales Holiday Lets on the right hand side of the main road and a turning directly opposite to the left. Enjoying the sunny days It’s been a treat the last few days. So loved just being outside and seeing what nature is coming on the farm along with the newborn lambs. I think we have had our first sightings of all the migrants returned to breed; redstart, pied flycatcher. curlew, housemartin and swallow. Nuthatch are always a favourite around the house here. They are pretty noisy and follow you about the yard. Billy is a complete pee machine. His little bladder unable to hold much. Think many have had christened feet the last few days. I seem to wander behind him with a mop! However he’s hard not to feel protective of him. Soon he will go out with Mabel but for now he’s enjoying the warmth of the Rayburn on these colder nights. He loves his milk. His mother is out on the field grazing and this summer she will be able to grow. Our final push for Machynlleth was an absolute blinder, with very good trail conditions in Hafren and along Glyndwrs Way given the recent weather we’ve had, for 6 months! When it comes to be….. A couple of weeks ago I shared a drawing I had done for a mammal article in a newsletter and then I got this photo at the farm pond and realised that it was a dream come true. Especially when some of you commented about wind and the willows and such. If you swipe ➡️ you will see just how it all came true. I named my vole Walter in my story/article….. so you guessed it Walter is his name now. There are a few sites this year I need to check prior to some peatland restoration and a few others I wanted to check in on. Keep an eye out for water vole where you live. There is also a survey this year by the @ptes_org encouraging us to look out for these great little creatures. Water voles have experienced one of the most rapid and serious declines of any British wild mammal ever. You can check out some of the sites to see if there are any water vole. To gauge where we stand now since the last national survey. I’d love to have another pond put in under the SFS though I imagine it wouldn’t be allowed as habitat land everywhere but I know a great place for a pond and where voles would definitely colonise.
