I don’t share this story very often, but when I met the Dogwood spirit 13 years ago they were being hit hard with a blight that was weakening and killing the native trees When I connected with her, I could feel the potency of her medicine, and also her deep need for spiritual support I asked how I could help her, and I felt her desire to be honored by song every day. I had received a song from the dogwood in my yard that honored her beauty, and I promised I’d sing it to her daily for a month Every day when I’d sing, I could feel the way she soaked it in, receiving the medicine of the frequency of the sound and words I could feel the way that when my heart was true and open, I was impacting her well-being. If we go back 6 years I can honestly say that the idea of communicating with plants sounded quite bizarre to me. What does it even mean to talk to a plant? I could simply not wrap my mind around it. Yet here I am talking to plants, connecting with their spirits and learning from their wisdom. It is a humbling lesson reminding me that just because there is something I don’t understand, it certainly doesn’t mean that it does not exist or is untrue. It points more in the direction of me not being mature enough to understand it yet. I could say that about many of the teachings I am studying. I have been wandering. Wandering through the wisteria, the marsh, the cemetery, in the trees, by the river, in my gardens, through early spring, and through myself. A double eclipse season, Chiron the wounded healer, and a fiery full moon in Scorpio. My head has been down, my mind on overdrive, my voice.....quiet. Witch's contemplation. Spiritual warfare, disappointments, old wounds scratched open. Only the plants I tend to listen. The journey through the heart can be the longest and hardest trek. The wounds were not my responsibility, but my healing will always be. A chapter is coming to a close, yet again, and I am unsure which way is up, down, or sideways. Unsure where I belong, because capitalism and colonial processes are just so loud, deafening. The urgency in my body smells of capitalism. My worth tied to production. Practice stepping outside cultural norms and processes day after day. Proving my worth on sheets of paper, will my writing be understood? My heart? My intentions and abilities? Who can see the value in my rituals? My art? Who wants to walk hand in hand though the marsh and the cemetery? The places of rot and compost. The place of ending and beginning. I am in an unknown time, and will be using this platform less and less, in order to take my energy back.
