These Immortal Souls – Get Lost (Don’t Lie). This record takes me back to my college days. These Immortal Souls was a cool indie band that featured Rowland S Howard (Birthday Party, Crime And The City Solution) and Epic Soundtracks (Swell Maps, Crime And The City Solution). This jam… Get Lost (Don’t Lie) was released in 1987 on Mute Records in the UK and SST Records in the US. I used to own the SST pressing but sadly it was lost with the sands of time. Mute Records just reissued the album and I scooped it up again. The music is adjacent as to what you would hear from Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds at the time. Just arrived... This is the first time both of These Immortal Souls albums have been reissued (and remastered) since their first releases. The first album was originally released in 1987 the second in 1992. The albums are remastered by @harryhoward.official and @genevievesmcguckin the two living members of the band that I was able to see perform last month in their hometown of Melbourne and in Sydney. 🖤🔥 From @muterecords : These Immortal Souls - Rowland S Howard (The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party, Crime & the City Solution on guitar/vocals), Harry Howard (Crime & the City Solution - bass guitar), Epic Soundtracks (Swell Maps, Crime & the City Solution on drums) and Genevieve McGuckin (keyboards) - were formed in London in 1987. Rowland, Harry, Epic - who had all been in Crime & the City Solution - and Genevieve, a contributor and influence on The Birthday Party/Boys Next Door. Rowland and Genevieve had been working together until Rowland invited Harry and Epic to join "a solo project that would be like a band because I like the idea of bands." This release includes notes by original member Harry Howard and is released alongside the 2024 remaster editions of their debut album, ‘Get Lost (Don’t Lie!)’, and their second album, ‘I’m Never Gonna Die Again’. The band consisted of Rowland S. Howard who rose to prominence in the Birthday Party, his bass-playing brother Harry Howard, drummer Epic Soundtracks (formerly of Swell Maps and Jacobites), and keyboardist Genevieve McGuckin. They came together in 1987, after Soundtracks and the Howard brothers split from Crime & the City Solution and were joined by McGuckin to form These Immortal Souls in London. Epic Soundtracks was born on March 23, 1959 in Croydon, Surrey, England as Kevin Paul Godfrey. He died on November 6, 1997 in London, England. Epic Soundtracks (aka Kevin Paul Godfrey) was the younger brother of musician Nikki Sudden (aka Adrian Nicholas Godfrey). His brother Nikki Sudden wrote in July 1999 that Epic Soundtracks was "born during the afternoon of March 23rd 1959 in our parents' bedroom at 34 Chapel View, South Croydon" in Surrey, England. Rex and German krautrock groups such as Can and Faust, they went on to be influential to many others in the post-punk era. The band consisted of Solihull teenagers Epic Soundtracks (real name Kevin Paul Godfrey), his brother Nikki Sudden (real name Adrian Nicholas Godfrey), Jowe Head (Stephen Bird), Biggles Books (Richard Scaldwell), Phones Sportsman (David Barrington) and John "Golden" Cockrill. The band released the single "Read About Seymour" in 1977. It is widely considered to be a classic punk era single, and is referenced in the song "Part Time Punks" by Television Personalities. After recording their first John Peel session Swell Maps went into WMRS studio to record their first album A Trip to Marineville, which was released in 1979. Sleeping Star. Released 1994. Remembering Epic Soundtracks (23 March 1959 - 6 November 1997) with the 30th anniversary of his 2nd solo album. An understated gem of pop balladry in a classic early-70s singer-songwriter style. Though best-known for drumming in pioneering post-punk acts Swell Maps (with his brother Nikki Sudden), Crime & the City Solution and These Immortal Souls, this later career reinvention finds Epic playing most of the instruments himself but is primarily featured on piano and guitar. But it's the moving melodies and plaintive songwriting that's the biggest revelation. Unfortunately, soon after he embarked on this new direction he passed away at 38.
