Today I am grateful for... Estuaries 🌍 An estuary is known as a partially enclosed, coastal water body where the freshwater from streams and rivers mixes in with the salt water from the ocean. This creates a unique situation and ecosystem. Estuaries are amongst the most productive ecosystems on Earth. They're a special place and many animals rely on them for food, places to breed, and migration stopovers. In fact, they remain an exceptionally important feeding and/or nursery habitat for ecologically and commercially important invertebrates and fish; as well as migrating birds. Invertebrates include insects, worms, jellyfish, corals, starfish, and snails. The dominant plant groups in many estuaries are seagrass, macroalgae and microalgae, mangroves, and saltmarsh. Plants that live in estuaries tolerate some extreme environmental stresses. These include changes in tides and/or water levels, currents, rainfall, and salinity. Mangrove trees are an excellent example of this. Furthermore, estuaries act like buffers, protecting lands from crashing waves and storms. These buffers help prevent soil erosion as they soak up excess flood water and tidal surges.
