Horror Movie Locations ( Image No. 9 ) ~ Evergreen Plantation ~ The Evergreen Plantation is located on the west side of the Mississippi River in St. John the Baptist Parish, near Wallace, Louisiana, and along Louisiana Highway 18. The main house was constructed mostly in 1790, and renovated to its current Greek Revival style in 1832. The plantation operated until about 1930, when the Depression resulted in the owners abandoning the house. The plantation continued to produce sugar cane under the direction of the bank that owned it, and it is still a working sugar cane plantation today. The house was extensively restored during the 1940s, with 300,000 bricks from the demolished Uncle Sam Plantation used in the restoration. 🇺🇸 Viaggio in USA 🇺🇸 Ecco la "Evergreen Plantation", una delle piantagioni schiaviste lungo il fiume Mississippi, nella zona di New Orleans LA. La Louisiana faceva parte degli stati confederati che non volevano abolire la schiavitù perché tutta la loro economia si basava sullo sfruttamento della forza lavoro degli schiavi appunto, comprati investendo migliaia di dollari a volte per quelli più robusti e capaci. Nelle fotografie che ho scattato durante il mio viaggio on-the-road in USA si possono vedere la casa padronale, dove spesso risiedevano anche gli "schiavi da cortile", e le baracche adibite ad alloggi per gli "schiavi da fatica". Non esistevano giorni di riposo per gli schiavi da fatica, le proprie faccende personali dovevano essere svolte durante quello che rimaneva della lunga e stancante giornata di lavoro. Venivano frustati spesso per futili motivi e quasi sempre per sadismo. I bambini che nascevano nelle piantagioni non conoscevano il concetto di libertà, era solamente un'astrazione, per loro era normale vivere da schiavi perché non conoscevano altro. Alla fine della Guerra di Secessione la schiavitù venne abolita ma negli stati del sud, anche 100 anni dopo (ovvero intorno agli anni '60), perdurava un clima di intolleranza e di segregazione razziale con la proliferazione di gruppi organizzati, come il KKK, per il ripristino della supremazia della razza dominante. In questa piantagione è stata girata tutta la parte relativa a Big Daddy e alla vendetta contro i Brittle Brothers nel film "Django Unchained" del 2012. There are famous plantations down south, we visited two outside the city. #evergreenplantation was a production site of film #djangounchained. #whitneyplantation was only a short distance away, and was much more organized in it's presentation and interpretation. Maybe because we had by chance met very different guides on our tours, we left with quite different impressions of these plantations. Our guide at the Evergreen plantation was much more passionate and informed of the history of the place, whereas the other one was very much pamphlet dry material recited to us. Evergreen is said to be still a working sugar cane plantation to this day. They seem to have stopped tours now. You can get a virtual tour online but it's just not the same. Evergreen Plantation in St. John the Baptist Parish is unique in that it is a National Historic Landmark that is closed to the public, though it remains dedicated to research and education. At Evergreen, archaeologists are able to study the lifeways of 44 to 48 households from 1800 to 1950 by cataloguing artifacts found in the yards and spaces around the structures. This project, known as the Evergreen Plantation Archaeological Survey, is helmed by lead investigator Dr. Jayur Madhusudan Mehta, an assistant professor in anthropology at Florida State University. I wanted to share some more of these images from the archaeology dig at Evergreen Plantation for @64parishes. This first image was one of my favorites. Taken out of context it has a more ambiguous tone. I also got a nice surprise package in the mail yesterday from LEH - they mailed me a hard copy of the magazine.
The site of an archaeological dig at Evergreen Plantation in Wallace, La. I took these photos in June of 2021 and now finally able to share them since the Archaeology Issue of @64parishes is out. This was a really interesting assignment as you can see full of digging and sifting through the dirt. Jayur Mehta of Florida State University (image 2 on the right) led this band of archaeologists, grad students, and high school volunteers to carefully uncover remnants and artifacts of prior residents going back to the early 1800’s. Extensive mapping and subsurface surveying was done of the area as well (seen in image 4 what looks like a push lawnmower). In image 7 a hand made brick with the letter R carved in it and fingerprints are clearly seen.

🎥UN LIEU, UN TOURNAGE🎥 Ayant servi de décor pour Django Unchained, Evergreen Plantation a été construite à la fin du 18eme siècle. Située près de Wallace (en Louisiane), cette plantation de canne à sucre était cultivée par les afro-américains réduits en esclavage à l'époque. Restaurée plusieurs fois jusqu'à aujourd'hui, elle compte plusieurs bâtiments dont une bonne vingtaine de quartiers d'esclaves. Cela en fait l'une des plantations de canne à sucre les plus importantes de la région. Elle est d'ailleurs toujours active... sans esclaves pour l'entretenir, bien évidemment. En raison de son importance , Evergreen Plantation est aujourd'hui considéré comme monument historique national américain. NOLA In a previous trip to New Orleans, I went on a tour of the Evergreen Plantation located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. This home dates back to the late 18th century and contains 37 separate structures and is actually a working sugarcane plantation. I definitely relish going on tours of historical places whenever I travel. You can learn so much from being in the actual space. 🇺🇲 PODRÓŻE PO WSPOMNIENIACH - USA 2019 (part 10) _ KWIECIEŃ 2019r. Jazda na 'dupolocie' przy 30 stC ? Czemu nie ! W Stanach wszystko jest możliwe. Kolejna zmiana krajobrazu. Tym razem White Sands National Monument. To nie śnieg...to GIPS ! w Nowym Meksyku na pustyni Chihuahua. Zajmuje ona obszar 600 km2 i jest największą gipsową pustynią na świecie. Skąd ten gips ? A no spływa z gór, które otaczają pustynię, później woda odparowuje i wiatr robi swoje. Później zawitaliśmy na chwilę do Roswell , gdzie podobno wylądowało kiedyś UFO. _ Powoli zaczęliśmy zmierzać na wschód w stronę Florydy. Po drodze zaliczyliśmy Fort Worth/Dallas w Teksasie oraz Plantację Evergreen i Nowy Orlean w Luizjanie. Na plantacji trzciny cukrowej kręcono Django Quentina Tarantino 😍 Teksas to jedyny stan, przez który jedziesz 8 godzin i wciąż jesteś w Teksasie. Przejazd zajął nam dwa dni. W Forth Worth był niespodziewany nocleg u dobrych ludzi, którzy zaprosili nas do siebie - rodzina Martinezów 💚💚💚 Poza tym odwiedziliśmy bar znany ze 'Strażnika Teksasu' - to tutaj Chuck Norris trzaska obrotowymi drzwiami)... __ Nowy Orlean ! Ważny ośrodek kulturalny, uważany za kolebkę jazzu. Ukochane miasto Louisa Armstronga, do którego tęsknił w utworze "Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans". _ Florida - the sunshine state ! Od Nowego Orleanu dosłownie przemknęliśmy przez stany Mississippi i Alabama prosto w kierunku Panama City na Florydzie. Po drodze odwiedziliśmy dzielnicę Carpenters Run w miasteczku Lutz - miejsce, w którym powstał film 'Edward Nożycoręki' (1990).
