Sometimes picture books connect more to the parents than the kids. When I (Essie) read “When Father Comes Home” I was moved to tears and knew I had to share it with my husband Hsin-Fu. The author, @sarahjungart, writes about the Korean concept of “goose dads”, fathers who live and work in another country than their children, in an effort to provide the best for the children. These transnational families are not just Korean, Hsin-Fu grew up in just such a family and his heritage is Chinese. This book captures the love, longing, sadness, pain, and more love of these situations. Sarah Jung drew from her childhood growing up in Canada while her father working in Korea to write this book. She calls this a “love letter to my family”. It certainly is a story of resilience as well. Transnational families are a theme in Asian American history, especially in the Chinese American story. In the later 1800’s and early 1900’s, many men from China came to the US to work to better provide for their families back home. One transnational family’s story is seen in the short documentary @fareastdeepsouth, which we highly recommend. Happy Thanksgiving! We're thankful that 8 yrs ago the Chiu family walked into the MS Delta Chinese Heritage Museum at @deltastateuniversity and met @deltaemily. A family vacation turned into a life-changing experience that we share with the world in our film. The Chiu family learned their family wasn't the only Chinese one in Mississippi. Hundreds of Chinese run grocery stores filled the #MississippiDelta in the early to mid-1900s. Thank you to everyone we met along the way for helping the Chiu family find their roots and uncover the history of their family in America. #fbf to one of our 1st test screenings of Far East Deep South at a school in Mississippi. To see kids so engaged watching our film was very encouraging. However, One thing we learned is that the implicit bias that Asians are perpetual foreigners was strong. Many kids automatically thought some scenes in our film were set in China like this kite flying scene. This scene used to open our film. This was actually in San Francisco. It prompted us to reframe our film to address Asian American identity more.
