It’s 2023 En Primeur release day for this British favourite @chateau_pontetcanet and from what we’ve heard, it’s looking like a big year for the 5th Growth Pauillac. We’re not interested in the EP campaign for the most part and prefer to get involved with the wines as they enter their drinking window further down the line - like this 1996, opened a couple of years ago whilst at its peak. One of those years that didn’t promise much on release but has proven in time to be one of the best of the decade for most estates of the Left Bank, especially in Pauillac. What was once austere became integrated and polished, and the best kept bottles show the cool vintage at its elegant, complex, terroir nuanced best. A few favourites from our mixed winter selection cases. A textured and terroir driven aromatic white from Alsace’s Marcel Deiss, and New Zealand’s own Montrachet in the unstoppable Kumeu River Hunting Hill. Our first time with this cuvée, won’t be the last. Sesti’s Brunellos are great in any year but the 2016 really hits the spot and justifies the praise of the vintage. Divine Sangiovese Grosso, still just getting started as the fruits calm and spices develop. La Dame de Montrose, the second wine of our favourite Château, showing the purity of St Estephe and a superbly crafted Bordeaux blend. (If we could drink the wines of any Bordeaux estate for life, this would be the one). Impossible not to love Bodegas Aalto. Ripe and structured Temperanillo, poised and polished, new oak welcome. Surprisingly versatile gastronomically too - an all round shout for any kitchen. Hebrart’s 1er Cru Blanc de Blanc is one of the best value Champers out there and sets a very high standard for the houses higher priced cuvées. Proper fizzy Chardy, and dangerously easy to drink. David & Nadia helping to redefine Grenache with its soft, delicate body and rose tinted nose. Elegance is seldom used for this variety but this one’s very. A 2019 throwback to a glorious day harvesting Cannubi in the sun! On top of it producing some of the highest quality Nebbiolo in the world, it’s also one of the best viewpoints in the appellation and an absolute pleasure to work in with the picking gang. Amongst the influx of 2020s being released right now we’re still working our way through many of the 2019 Barolos which have more poise and focus in the reds than the previous 2 vintages, and more reliability across the region. A cooler vintage for modern times, but still scorching on the southwest facing slopes of the Cannubi vineyard resulting in wines are potent, structured, and full of its transparent terroir nuance. Most are still so young in their journey so only time will tell how they hold up in the long haul. ¡Hablemos de...Sauternes! 🤩 Primero hay que entender que los Sauternes no existirían si no fuera por el Río Ciron, 💦 que es un río corto del suroeste de Francia, 🇫🇷 que desemboca en el Gaona, en el departamento de Gironda. Gracias a este río, se producen neblinas 😶🌫️ matinales que propician la aparición de la Podredumbre Noble 🍄 en los viñedos. Casualmente, los más susceptibles son los viñedos de 🍇 Sémillon, que es la uva insignia de Sauternes, aunque también ataca en menor porcentaje a los de 🍇 Sauvignon Blanc (que se usa entre un 10% y 20% en la mezcla de Sauternes, este aporta frescura y lo hace equilibrado). La vendimia de los Sauternes es manual, para solo cosechar los racimos de uva que hayan sido atacados por la Podredumbre Noble y los que no, se dejan en el viñedo hasta que ésta los ataque. 😮 Gracias a la cantidad de azúcar en estos vinos, pueden llegar a ser de guarda. Los vinos de Sauternes también fueron clasificados en 1885 y tiene tres niveles: ✨ Premier Cru Supérieur (1), ✨ Premier Cru (11) y ✨ Second Cru (15). Hoy me puse mi bata de laboratorio 👩🏻🔬 porque vamos a hablar de un tema que no puedes perderte: ¡Las Lías! 😮 ¿Qué son? ¿Las encontramos en todos los vinos? ¿Qué aportan? ¡Acompáñame y te enseño! 👩🏻🏫 Seguramente alguna vez has visto un vino que en la etiqueta diga: “Reposado en lías”, 🤔 y para entenderlo…¡vamos a la fermentación! Donde las levaduras 🔬 están comiendo el azúcar del mosto para producir alcohol y CO2. 🧪 Cuando ya no hay más azúcar para comer, las levaduras mueren y se asientan en el fondo de los tanques o barricas, es aquí cuando dejan de llamarse levaduras y pasan a llamarse lías, 🪄 entonces podemos decir que un vino reposado en lías es aquel que envejeció en contacto con las levaduras muertas tras la fermentación alcohólica. 🤩 Cuando las levaduras mueren sucede la autolisis, que es un proceso químico ⚗️ donde se rompe la pared celular de las lías, confiriendo al vino sustancias que le aportarán untuosidad, complejidad, intensidad, persistencia y estabilidad. 😉 ¿Se te ocurre algún vino que tenga reposo sobre lías? Hoy es día de celebrar 🥳 a una de las uvas blancas favoritas de todos los amantes del vino: ¡La Pinot Grigio! 🍇 Esta uva blanca viene de la región de Borgoña, 🇫🇷 donde la Pinot Noir, al sufrir una mutación de color vio nacer a esta nueva uva. 🤩 Aunque estuvo plantada en la Borgoña y en Champaña, en el siglo 19 decidieron arrancar las vides por su escaso rendimiento y por susceptibilidad a enfermedades; 😳 pero en otras regiones del mundo encontró su segundo hogar. 🌎 Es importante hablar de su presencia Alsacia 📍 es una uva muy importante, pues está dentro de la categoría de “Uvas nobles”, que son usadas para los vinos de Grand Cru y los “Vendage Tardive” (Vendimia Tardía). También está presente en 📍 Alemania, Italia, Australia, Nueva Zelanda, y en mi región favorita: ¡Oregon! 🇺🇸 Donde representa 14% de la plantación total del estado, principalmente en Willamette Valley y Southern Oregon. Hablemos de…¡Macán Clásico! 🍷 Macán Clásico es el resultado del expertise y la visión 💪🏼 en conjunto de dos grandes nombres dentro del mundo del vino: Benjamín de Rothschild y Vega Sicilia. 👏🏻 El proyecto nace cuando Benjamín de Rothschild le propone un proyecto vinícola en conjunto a Pablo Álvarez, de Vega Sicilia. 😳 Algo muy interesante es que el primer acercamiento no contemplaba Rioja, ¡Literalmente buscaron desarrollos hasta en Australia! 😮 después, se darían cuenta que efectivamente, en 📍 Rioja, a 250km de la sede de Vega Sicilia 🇪🇸 encontrarían el terroir perfecto y las viñas con edad media de 40 años que buscaban, 🌱🍇 perfectas para el vino que buscaban desarrollar. Y desde el 2009 el vino ha superado las expectativas que han surgido alrededor de él.
