2007 was quite a good vintage overall for Piemonte, although early approachable wines they also proves to age well. The Cannubi from Chiara Boschis is no exception, with superb balance, well developed fruit, ample, vibrant, acidity, integrated tannins and long aftertaste. Neapolitan pizza and a very nice Italian duo at @artechiara_pizzaverace: a 2010 E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Mosconi and a 2010 Azienda Agricola Montevertine Toscana IGT. The Montevertino was more approachable, more vibrant, and more red-fruited with cherry, roses, some tobacco and herbs. Well integrated soft tannins, fresh acidity, good concentration and length. The Barolo was a bit closed initially but opened up nicely after a bit of time in the glass. It had more tannins and was darker in fruit, more herbal and more tertiary. There were many goodies in the lineup, including these beauties from @marzianoabbona @__chiara_boschis__xx and @cavallottobriccoboschis Different villages, different vintages, different winemaking. Same yumminess. The 2001s were really singing and each of them had their own, individual merits but the wine that captured the most emotions this particular evening was the brilliant Barolo Bricco Boschis from @alfiocavallotto So dark and muscular yet polished and deeply layered. A true winner. A 2019 throwback to a glorious day harvesting Cannubi in the sun! On top of it producing some of the highest quality Nebbiolo in the world, it’s also one of the best viewpoints in the appellation and an absolute pleasure to work in with the picking gang. Amongst the influx of 2020s being released right now we’re still working our way through many of the 2019 Barolos which have more poise and focus in the reds than the previous 2 vintages, and more reliability across the region. A cooler vintage for modern times, but still scorching on the southwest facing slopes of the Cannubi vineyard resulting in wines are potent, structured, and full of its transparent terroir nuance. Most are still so young in their journey so only time will tell how they hold up in the long haul. Chiara Boschis ci ha abituato a grandissimi vini: lo è il Barolo Mosconi che nasce del vigneto più vecchio della cru situata a Monforte d'Alba. “Il terreno è tipicamente Elveziano di formazione più antica – spiegano dalla cantina Boschis - Questi suoli, siti ad un'altitudine di circa 400mt slm., conferiscono grande struttura e caratteristiche tipiche del Barolo da lungo invecchiamento”. Il Barolo Mosconi ha un colore rosso bruno intenso; il profumo è generalmente molto aperto con sentori floreali, di frutta matura, ed alcune note speziate. Great tasting of Chiara Boschis Barolos at @dengamladamen 2017 cannubi 2012 Cannubi 2019 Mosconi 2018 Mosconi 2009 Via Nuova 2008 Via Nuova All great wines. 2017 Cannubi was my favourite which was a bit unexpected because: A: I am not always that big of a fan of 2017s (usually prefer 2018s for instance) would have guessed 2012. B: Hot vintage which is not good for Cannubi’s hot micro climate and bad water drainage (low altitude, sandy soil, steep slopes). 2012 Cannubi was my second favourite and Via Nuova 2009 the third. Interesting enough the 2009 and 2008 Via Nuova were quite different from each other. This is due to the grapes being sourced from different areas. 2008 came from the old Via Nuova area (southern Terlo) and since 2009 it’s a blend of different areas (Via Nuova, Liste, Ravera, Mosconi, Baudana and Gabutti) for the first time due to the introduction of the official MGAs (this was however done in 2010 but I guess there might have been some sort of transition period before they came into place). 2009 has much more dried fruit note such as fig and raisin while the 2008 is more on the earthy side. Mosconis also very good with notes of menthol, cherry, raspberry, orange peel herbs and spirits. Mosconi has however never been one of my favourite MGAs where I always feel the alcohol can feel a little too forward. #chiaraboschis #epiraefigli #barolo #mosconi #cannubi #vianuova

Kältezeit ist Rotweinzeit: Chiara Boschis Weine aus dem Barolo-Gebiet sind dafür ein Traum! Seit sie das Weingut 1990 übernommen hat, steht sie für Modernität und Modernisierung. Ihr Ziel war und ist es, der Kraft und Wucht des Barolo pointierte Fruchtaromen und eine samtige Eleganz entgegenzusetzen, um ihn damit zugänglicher zu machen. Das gelingt ihr durch ein rigoroses Weinbergmanagement, strikte Traubenselektion und einen behutsamen Ausbau im Keller. Der beinhaltet eine verkürzte Mazerationszeit, eine gezielt initialisierte malolaktische Gärung sowie einen wohl dosierten Barriqueeinsatz. Chiara, eine der wenigen Winzerinnen im Barolo-Gebiet, glaubt fest an ihre Vision der „great small farm“. Zu ihrem Besitz gehören gerade einmal 8,5 Hektar, von denen sich allerdings 2,5 in der großen Lage Cannubi befinden. Neuester Zugang ist ein wunderschön gelegener Weinberg in der Lage Mosconi di Monforte. Trotz ihrer zierlichen Figur bearbeitet sie die Weinberge selber und betreut auch den Keller, der kaum größer als ein Wohnzimmer ist, alleine. Abgefüllt wird ohne Filtration. Jährlich verlassen ca. 35.000 Flaschen die Kellerei und werden auf der ganzen Welt, vor allem in Amerika, sehr geschätzt und mit Auszeichnungen überhäuft. #barolo #chiaraboschis

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas everyone! Antonio Galloni’s first round of reviews for Napa 2021’s were released yesterday, and our 2021 wines received fantastic reviews despite the challenges on Howell (drought, heat, fire stress, well not in yet etc.) Good news or not, Shelly and I had to wrangle Toonces for his vet check up. Kudos to those hardworking, caring folks at Camino Alto Vet hospital. Our boy is 1.5 lbs heavier, so easy on the turkey for him. We hit Poggio after for a catch up lunch and enjoyed two godly bottles of Barolo from a couple of my favorite producers off of their list for less than retail- 2007 Aldo Contero Barolo Cicala and 2017 E. Pira Mosconi Barolo (Chiara Boschis) Great to meet Chef Ben and Adrienne’s son Luca at last (pictured w Adrienne’s mom) and see the Poggio crew- Amy, Cassie, Ben, Bart, Johnny, Deborah and the rest. It was gorgeous in Sausalito and great to have a lunch date with Shelly and Rick. Life is good. Barolo and Barbaresco prices keep climbing, and now is a great time to remember the other great grapes of Piedmont for value. Nebbiolo gets the spotlight, and rightfully so, but the little grapes of Piedmont have really been impressing me lately. Dolcetto can be a challenging grape. Has the tannic structure like nebbiolo but lacks the acidity in my opinion for them to age long term. When done right, I find these wines beautiful, but if the tannins aren't managed properly before bottling, the wines usually get tired before the tannins resolve. That definitely isn't the case here! E. Pira & Figli Dolcetto d'Alba 2021 Ruby red with purple reflections. Dry, slightly tannic, with wild strawberries, cherries, violets, slight bitter almonds, and licorice. Blind tasting organised by the tireless mind of @andrea_fasoglio - he assigned a wine region to each of us, but we didn’t know they were all either Barolo or Barbaresco. Overall WOTN was Cascina delle Rose Rio Sordo 18, with clean fresh raspberries, a delicate balsamic profile and great elegance. Much readied than, and much different from, the Rio Sordo 16, which seemed more extracted, more tannic, with dried herbs and darker fruit. Definitely a bigger wine, with maybe a brighter future. Piero Busso Gallina 18 is similarly ready to drink, with aromas not often associated to Nebbiolo: besides some bitter orange peel, white orchard fruit, white peach, pear. Another takeaway is just how singular Burlotto’s Monvigliero is, with its whole-bunch aromas - curiously a wine that was immediately recognised by those who tried it before, but also the only wine some people placed outside of Langhe (Burgundy and even Jura were mentioned). Four bottles out of ten didn’t perform.. an 08 Gaja, an 07 Rinaldi, an 11 Chiara Boschis and a 95 Ceretto.. you can’t win them all I guess, but it hurts every time.
