Allerdings ist er nichts für Anfänger, denn er ist sehr leicht mit dem tödlich giftigen Gifthäubling zu verwechseln. ☠️ Hier haben wir: Stockschwämmchen (Kuehneromyces mutabilis) 🍄🟫 Vorkommen: auf Laubholz-Ästen 🌳 Speisepilz 🍴 Es kann auch durchaus vorkommen, dass man sowohl den Gifthäubling als auch das Stockschwämmchen zur selben Zeit auf dem selben Substrat findet. Gifthäubling / aderiger Morchelbecherling Galerina marginata / Disciotis venosa 📸 31.3.2024 Eigentlich müsste man bei diesem Gifthäubling die Vorkommenszeit auf ganzjährig umschreiben. In den Büchern steht auch immer wieder etwas anderes. Mal wird von Frühling bis Spätherbst geschrieben oder von August bis Oktober usw. Bei mir in meiner Gegend kam er seit Sommer jeden Monat vor, gerade auch in diesem Stück Wald. Auch in den letzten Jahren nicht außergewöhnlich bei mir im Winter. Da es bei mir kaum längere Frostphasen gab, war er sofort wieder am Wachsen wenn es Richtung +8/10 Grad ging. Und da Stockschwämmchen bei mir ebenfalls ab Februar wachsen , ist es wie im Herbst für Pilzeinsteiger ratsam, diese Pilze nicht zu sammeln oder sie von einer/m Sachverständigen prüfen zu lassen. Erst im Dezember hatte ich bei einer Winterpilztour mit meiner Schwester einen Stamm mit ca. 20 Fruchtkörpern darauf. While hiking along a trail far less traveled in Shenandoah, I had the opportunity to photograph these incredible and tiny mushrooms! Identifying these was tough, but through an abundance of academic resources, fungi-indexes and mushroom identifiers, I feel pretty confident in concluding this mushrooms identity as Funeral Bells, or Galerina Marginata! 🔔 • Did you know Funeral Bells are considered one of the deadliest and most dangerous mushrooms? Yesterday, I stumbled upon a log covered with Galerina marginata, aka Funeral Bells. These mushrooms, with their distinctive caramel caps, are extremely dangerous due to the deadly amatoxins they share with the notorious death cap mushroom (Amanita phalloides). Galerina marginata is found across the Northern Hemisphere, spanning Europe, North America, Asia, and even Australia. Instantly recognizing them, my familiarity stems more from their counterparts in New Zealand (Galerina patagonica). This species epitomizes the typical LBM (little brown mushroom), easily mistaken for several edible varieties such as Armillaria mellea, Kuehneromyces mutabilis, Hypholoma capnoides, Psilocybe subaeruginosa, and Conocybe filaris. Despite their toxicity, I found them to be quite photogenic!

This is a common but extremely poisonous mushroom that contains the same deadly amatoxins found in the death cap (𝘈𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘢 𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴). It is widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, but it has also been found in Australia. It is a wood-rotting fungus that grows predominantly on decaying conifer wood. The fruit bodies have brownish orange caps that fade in color when drying. The gills are brownish and produce a rusty spore print, which often helps it separate from other lookalikes. The well-defined membranous ring is typically seen on the stems, but often disappears with age. Don’t make this deadly mistake! 🍄 ☠️ If you want to begin foraging for edible mushrooms in Southeastern US, it’s a good idea to start by learning to positively identify the common toxic species first. Galerian marginata, also known as funeral bell or deadly skullcap, is an amatoxin containing species of small brown mushroom, that can be found in this region; growing on decaying wood and mulch.It can easily be mistaken for some of the wood-loving psychoactive species in the genus Psilocybe, which are often hunted by adventurous souls, who wish to use them recreationally or medicinally. The biggest difference is the color of the spore print. Psilocybe produces a dark purple/brownish spore print while Galerina spores are rusty brown. Psilocybe also tend to bruise blue when handled. They have a gelatinous pellicle, a skin-like layer covering the cap of the mushroom, that can be peeled away. Galerina lacks these characteristics. You can see in the third photo how easy it would be to make this deadly mistake. ☠️ Another edible look-a-like is brickcap, also known as chestnut mushroom and cinnamon cap. The fourth photo is a side-by-side comparison of the deadly funeral bell (left) and the edible brickcap mushroom (right). They were found growing on separate logs right beside one another. They are so very similar but notice the ring zone on the left and the gill color. Spore prints would show rusty brown in funeral bell vs purplish brown for brickcaps (Hypholoma lateritium). It’s definitely worth getting to know Galerina marginita, as a handful of these will lead to one of the most horrific deaths a human could possibly experience. Galerina marginata growing from decaying wood. This is where I see them most frequently. They do show up on wood chips too, and that’s where you have to be careful. Check the last slide, a video of two that look somewhat similar to P. cyanescens structurally. The grayish streaks on the stipe are a dead giveaway that it is Galerina marginata. It will also have a rusty brown spore print, as opposed to the purple black color of P. cyanescens, and doesn’t bruise blue when damaged. The velvet shank is a mushroom that thrives in winter’s chill when there are few other fungi around to confuse it with. Which is auspicious, as the velvet shank resembles the ominous ‘funeral bell’ mushroom, which contains the same deadly amatoxins as the infamous death cap! Be careful and you’ll be fine though as - to add to the winter preference - the velvet shank has no ring on its dark stem, whereas the funeral bell has a conspicuous one on its paler one. Always check that your velvet shanks are not rocking rings, just in case! And if you want to be extra cautious, take a spore print. Velvet shank spores are white, funeral bell spores are brown. Both are little brown mushrooms growing on wood - one is edible and the other contains deadly amatoxins, so you have to be 100% sure which you have before eating. It’s terrifying Tuesday so here’s a Funeral Bell A.K. A. Galerina Marginata which contains the same deadly amatoxins found in the infamous Death Cap mushroom (Amanita phalloides). Ingestion in toxic amounts causes severe liver damage with vomiting, diarrhea, hypothermia, and eventual death if not treated rapidly. The species is a classic “little brown mushroom” – a catchall category that includes all small to medium-sized, hard-to-identify brownish mushrooms, and may be easily confused with several edible species. È un fungo principalmente lignicolo ma lo si può trovare anche su strati di muschio. Lo rendono mortale le sue “amatossine” (contenute anche in altre specie come Amanita Phalloide). Galerina marginata group. Funeral bells. These mushrooms contain deadly amatoxins. You can find them on rotting logs and wood chips. The latter of which should be well know by Psilocybe hunters. G. marginata is probably the closest “look alike” we have. The color of the cap is a tan brown, as opposed to a caramel brown on Psilocybes. G. marginata will also have a membranous partial veil that sometimes leaves a faint ring on the stipe that collects rusty brown spores. Psilocybes will have a purple brown spore print. The stipe of G. marginata can also be a dark grayish color, which some might try to convince themselves is a blueing reaction. When Psilocybes are damaged their flesh turns a blue to blue green color. I don’t often see them growing together here in the PNW but it is possible. The pictured specimens were in a wood chip bed that had Psilocybe cyanescens growing as well. When you look at both side by side it’s very easy to tell them apart, but always make sure you’re sure, and if you’re not don’t consume them. Azonban nem árt az óvatosság, mert a képen nem téli fülőke van, hanem egy kis amatoxin tartalmú gombácska, a fenyves sisakgomba (a gyilkos galóca is ezzel a toxinnal van felszerelkezve). Még a “nagy” havazás előtt, de a fagyok után készült a kép, így kicsit viseltes termőtestek már, azért a határozójegyek így is megfigyelhetőek. Nevével ellentétben nem csak fenyőn nő, gyakran találkozhatunk vele bármilyen lombos fán is, amelyről épp kajagombát akarnánk szedni... Kis odafigyeléssel el lehet kerülni a bajt. A sisakgombának van kis gallérkája (a képen a szélesebb fehéres sáv, rásimulva a tönkre) és ezüstösen szálas a tönkje. The Deathly Hallows ☠️ The Galerina marginata also known also known as Deadly Galerina, is a poisonous fungi containing the same amotoxins as the Death Cap mushrooms! Saprotrophic, I find these on just about any fallen tree, though I've read they prefer conifers. As you can see in these photos, the ring on the stipes are very pronouced. These were young, fresh fruiting bodies. While there are edible brown mushrooms, its best to avoid these in general. Edible and poison mushrooms are known to populate the same tree or area, making it easy to forage something by accident that could ultimately cost your life. These are called funeral bells or autumn skullcaps or deadly galerinas. The names hint at its cantankerous attitude. I was introduced to this species by a park ranger in California. He handled this mushroom in a very leisurely manner as he explained that it poses no danger unless consumed. He then dusted his hands off on his pants. I approach this mushroom with a bit more trepidation and make a point of washing my hands immediately after touching it. Today I used hand sanitizer as I was on the trail not near water. I later googled that: "Alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not remove many toxins, and may in fact carry them through the skin." For the last #fungusfriday of the year, which has been an awesome collaboration with @carnegiemnh, I want to teach you about a common, but deadly mushroom and its edible lookalikes. Commonly known as the deadly galerina or funeral bell (photos 1-2), this small, but toxic mushroom (also notice the awesome basal mycelium in photo 1!), is found in various parts of North America and Europe. Despite its diminutive size, typically ranging from 1 to 4 cm in diameter, this mushroom is notorious for its extreme toxicity. It contains amatoxins, which are deadly toxins that can cause severe liver and kidney damage if ingested. Due to its toxicity and resemblance to some sought-after edible species like velvet shanks (𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘴) (photo 3-4), sheathed woodtuft (𝘒𝘶𝘦𝘩𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘺𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴) (photo 5-6), or brickcaps (𝘏𝘺𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘮𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘶𝘮) (photos 7-8), it is of utmost importance that you learn this mushroom before eating any yellow-, orange- or brown-gilled mushrooms.
