To celebrate Greek master Jannis Kounellis’ birthday, we happily share a photo shot in Bergamo during his solo exhibition in 2009. On that occasion the artist had an interview in which he expressed some key aspects of his vision. To the question «How do you see the present art around you?», the artist replied that he was only interested in the future, and continued «I have no issues with the past. In this show I thought of exhibiting my first works, but it would make no difference, as the old works generated freedom and I don't consider them as archaeological samples of my research. In the mid-1960s he left anthropology and started sculpting. His anthropological work left a deep imprint that influenced his practice and his interest in studying the perception of space. Through a Minimalist vocabulary, Nonas developed a body of sculpture that engaged with that issue. #galleriafumagallicollection “Red Lit Circle with Etched Glass” – one of the first neon works by Keith Sonnier from Galleria Fumagalli's collection. The iconic sculpture was created in 1968 when the American pioneer of Postminimalism first began experimenting with neon light for his “Lit Circle Series”. Using copper tubing as a template, he began sketching lines, arches and curves, ultimately realising them in enclosed glass neon tubes. The linear quality of the material – manipulated with seemingly offhanded ease – enable him to draw in space with light and colour which interact with the surrounding architecture. The artwork was exhibited on the occasion of Keith Sonnier’s first solo show at Galleria Fumagalli in 2018, since when the gallery represents him exclusively in Italy. Ed. 2/5 French artists Anne and Patrick Poirier have been exploring different media throughout their career, spanning from large-sized sculptures, works on paper, paintings, up to photography. However, their entire oeuvre is the result of a journey through time and human memory, wishing to underline how life and human processes are fragile. The series “Fragility” depicts lilies carrying specific words. The photographic technique itself – which “burns” the subject while shooting it – makes evident the frailty of the flower as well as of the concept that is written. #anniversary Today a special thought goes to Lawrence Carroll who would have turned 66. For the occasion, we share a work of #galleriafumagallicollection which we cherish for its pictorial and subtle sculptural features combined. Imbued with influences by Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, and Minimalism, Carroll was particularly committed to Giorgio Morandi’s exploration of the complexity – despite apparently simple and humble – of daily objects. Lawrence Carroll used canvases not as mere backgrounds, but as real bodies made of stitched and joined fragments and layers, resulting in subtle modulations of colour and opacity. The work we post this week is a Richard Wilson’s project on paper that resulted in a wooden large sculpture of a space compressed. It is a study of a portion of the negative space or “space between” an hallway and staircase. The artist scanned a section of the stairwell to identify the area of space between the window and the entrance door. Richard Wilson's works always emerge from numerous sketches, drawing, models, tests. Museums are gradually reopening their doors worldwide. During the weekends the Zentrum für Internationale Lichtkunst, Unna (DE) opens its permanent collection and the major exhibition “Neon Delight”. Among the selected works on view, the exhibition features the sculpture “Ballroom Chandelier” (2008) by American master Keith Sonnier, a unique and delicate piece from the “Chandelier” series, consisting of intertwined, curved neon tubes to create organic configurations that give new meaning to the industrial material. This week Galleria Fumagalli presents the streaming of Chiara Lecca's video work “Coypu Panties”, made in 2006 and exhibited two years later in Galleria Fumagalli's former space in Bergamo in the solo exhibition “Del maiale non si butta niente”. The project questions the contemporary standards of beauty and the obsessive habit of removing body hair. The artist presents a toupée made of coypu fur that shamelessly emerges from the underwear of brightly dressed girls. Last Friday we shared a special focus on the work by German artist Peter Welz, featuring the video of the project “Retranslation | final unfinished portrait (francis bacon) | figure inscribing figure | [take 01 - 03]”, made in collaboration with William Forsythe and first presented at Musée du Louvre in 2006. American choreographer William Forsythe was asked by Welz to transfer into his dance the dynamic structure inherent to the last portrait by Francis Bacon, found unfinished on an easel in the Irish painter's studio after his death in 1992. This week Galleria Fumagalli presents the streaming of Chiara Lecca's video work “Bowels”, filmed in 2010 and never seen before at the gallery. Colourful organic elements (animal bowels) float in a harmonic and boundless space. A mix of ideas that move, aggregate, unravel and chase each other in the liquid until the moment when everything disappears after being absorbed by a black fluid: the intimate and archaic instinct, which embraces and permeates everything. #mariaelisabettanovello One of Maria Elisabetta Novello’s favoured media is ash. Treated in a sculptural way, it is enclosed in cases or attached to plexiglas panes to create plastic and vibrant images, showing all the shades of color. As shown by the works “Paesaggi” (Landscapes) and “Orizzonti” (Horizons), the different combustion residues are characterised by slight chromatic nuances, from the black of the soot to the very light grey (almost white) of ash dust. By the way, if sometimes you feel a bit trapped in your house like the woman in the image, remember that you can always travel with your fantasy and imagination reading a book. The photograph is part of the series “The Angels of the World” an endless project by Swiss artist Peter Wüthrich. Since 2010 the artist has been travelling all around the world asking passers-by to become angels wearing a book on their shoulders as paper wings. #richardwilson In 2003 Richard Wilson realised the project “Butterfly”, exhibited at The Wapping Project in London. A large cube of metal - an inarticulate volume - was placed on the floor of the Wapping Project’s main space and exhibited for a set period of time. Then, the artist and a team of assistants attached cables to the cube, then stretched them by using pulling machines. The slow process of pulling the metal block apart was recorded by a stop-motion camera to create a film of the object unfolding. Slowly, this process begins to reveal the cube’s original form: a crumpled light aircraft was revealed, like a butterfly unfolding from its chrysalis. —— 🔒The video of the project is now available. #mattiabosco Mattia Bosco firstly makes a selection of the rough and rejected rock, and secondly starts a maieutic process in which he brings out lines and structures already existing in the raw material. The artist infuses the stone and its stratigraphy with his own sign and memory; he takes matter away from its practical use and recognizes the profound History in it. He often uses the veined stone, never pure, like the rosewood marble, characterized by pink veins and shimmering quartz. #mattiabosco In his marble sculptures, Mattia Bosco often add metal inserts such as stainless steel and iron. In the recent years he has started to use the golden leaf giving life to the series “Sezione Aurea”. The artist operates by smoothing portions of the surface and covering them with golden leaf, rendering everything visible thanks to this added detail.
