Look what has appeared on @arthousekustannus’ website! A new Finnish translation of Anne of Green Gables is scheduled to be published in September! The most chocking news is of course that Anne is no longer Anna as we know her, but Anne like in English. Finnish readers, what’s your first reaction to this? My first thought is that it is more weird than having Emilia turned into Emily. The Finnish name Anne has such different associations to the English name Anne and it’s pronounced differently - with an e! The reason why Anne was called Anna in the first translation from 1920 was that the name Anne was rarely used in Finland at that time while Anna was common. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, Anne became a very common name in Finland, and is thus now strongly associated with that age group and era. It will be interesting to see how the part about Anne with an e will be translated! Are we supposed to pronounce Anne with an e like we do in Finnish, or are we expected to pronounce it in English as “Än”? I am exited to find out what the translation will be like! The translator is Terhi Leskinen. She is unknown to me, but appears to have a very large back catalogue of translations of picture books, children’s novels and YA novels. As for the cover, I find it lovely! Exactly my color and very fitting details! I was expecting the Puffin Classics cover to be used, but this one is even better. The web site does not mention who the cover artist is, but stay tuned for that credit. #lmmontgomery #anneofgreengables #vihervaarananna #annannuoruusvuodet #vihervaarananne #arthousekustannus #terhileskinen #retranslation #newtranslation #uudelleenkääntäminen #coverreveal #anneshirley

📗 L. M. My interview with translator @kaisaranta81 has now been published in the Finnish children’s literature journal Onnimanni 1/2024 by @lkinstituutti. This nostalgia themed volume contains lots of interesting articles about beloved classics, no less than four of them about Montgomery and girls’ books. Kaisa spoke about how excited she was to get to translate her childhood favorite Emily of New Moon. The translation process was like getting reacquainted with an old friend and all the different dimensions of Montgomery’s text provided many fun challenges. This interview is in Finnish, but an interview in English is coming up in the Journal of L.M. Montgomery Studies in the near future. PS.

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to discuss the new and old Finnish translations of Emily of New Moon with the translators Kaisa Ranta @kaisaranta81 and Saana Rusi @boulettesdeneige at an event organized by @sktlry at the opening festival of @tekstintalo! Yay for collaboration between translators and translation scholars! We had an enthusiastic audience both on site and online. Thank you everyone who participated! Of course we had to do a mini exhibition of our Emily editions! They looked good on the fancy antique table. If you want to know more about the new translation and its relation to the old translations, interview articles are soon coming up in the Journal of L.M. Montgomery Studies and the Finnish children’s literature journal Onnimanni. #lmmontgomery #emilyofnewmoon #runotyttö #pienirunotyttö #translation #retranslation #translationresearch #sktl #tekstintalo #kääntäjänäkyväksi

Uudenkuun Emilyn tarina jatkuu! More new Finnish Emily coming up! @kaisaranta81’s retranslation of Emily Climbs will be released next spring with another beautiful cover by @nuppuprintcompany. The title is the familiar Runotyttö maineen polulla (Poem Girl on the Path to Fame). Just like the cover, the back cover copy focuses on Emily’s writing. But there is also a hint of romance with Teddy. Interestingly, there is also a question asking “How do Perry and Dean Priest react to Emily growing up?” What are your expectations for this translation? The image is a screenshot from @arthousekustannus’s spring catalogue. #lmmontgomerymonday #lmmontgomery #emilyclimbs #runotyttö #runotyttömaineenpolulla #kaisaranta #nuppuprintcompany #retranslation #newtranslation #translation

Reading @kaisaranta81’s new Finnish translation of Emily of New Moon called simply Runotyttö (“Poem Girl”) rather than “Little Poem Girl” like in the original translation was a delightful experience. I have read Emily more times than I can count in various versions in English, Finnish, and Swedish, but still I paid attention to new nuances in this reading. It’s wonderful to finally have a full unabridged version in my own language. In my mind, Emily speaks Finnish just as naturally as English, as I originally met her in Finnish (and Swedish). I particularly delighted in all the passages I knew to be omitted in the original translation, such as many poignant narrator comments highlighting Montgomery’s subtle social criticism. While they don’t feel new to me, they will be to many readers. What will take some time for readers to adjust to is that some of the names are different to what Finnish readers are used to. The most “radical” change is that Emily is now Emily rather than Emilia as we have known and loved her as. Already on the first page we also meet Raisu-Rosie (Boisterous Rosie aka Saucy Sal) that manages to be a foreignizing and domesticating adaptation at the same time, and Tuuletar, a name for Wind Woman that beautifully combines the words for wind (tuuli) and queen (kuningatar). Later, we meet Kopea-John for Lofty John, which feels weird at first, but in its similarity in sound is actually a genial replacement for the original Korkea John (High John), which makes no sense. Hardest to adjust to is Marrasmantu (a ref to November) for Wyther Grange, which used to be Suvikartano (Summer Manor). The dark associations are more correct now, but the connection to Wuthering Heights is still lost. I’m looking forward to seeing more readers share their experiences of this new version of this beloved book! I’m sure there’s lots more to discover for me too. On this reading, I just enjoyed the book rather than doing too many comparisons with the original or old version. Thank you @arthousekustannus for gifting me this book and most of all for commissioning and publishing this wonderful translation! Readers deserve this! #lmmontgomery #emilyofnewmoon #runotyttö

Greetings from Austria! 🇦🇹 Last week, I visited @wienirina, and we visited a lot of book stores among other things! 📚 I found this new German translation of Anne of Green Gables by @bettinamuench. It was published by @atriumverlag in 2021. The publisher is actually Swiss. The cover illustration is by @delia.razak. I love that it features Anne with both Marilla and Matthew. It really focused on their love for her and Anne’s joy. The PEI landscape is quite the contrast to the square outside the Franciscan Church in Vienna where we photographed it. We chose this location because the statue is Saint Jerome, patron saint of translators (and librarians too)! I’m glad there has been so many retranslations of Anne lately! I will definitely attempt to read this one at some point, thou it was years ago I managed to read a book in German last. If anyone here reads German, please tell me what you think of the translation! I won’t be able to judge it. 🩵 #lmmontgomerymonday #lmmontgomery #anneofgreengables #anneaufgreengables #bettinamünch #deliarazak #atriumverlag #germantranslation #deutsch #retranslation #vienna #saintjerome

Greetings from Norway! 🇳🇴 Me and @minuett49 did an archive research trip to Oslo last week and found some information gems in the archives of Aschehoug, the first Norwegian publisher of Montgomery’s books. More about that later. I also visited a bookstore to finally buy a copy of @kristinaquintano’s retranslation of Anne of Green Gables from 2014. I can’t wait to read this complete Norwegian translation! I never read a Montgomery book in Norwegian before. This is the second edition of the translation and was published by @solumbokvennen in 2021. I’m glad the new translation is doing well enough to be printed in a second edition. There seems to be a market for Anne, as this book was available at the chain bookstore @arkbokhandel at the central railway station. This pretty cover is by @espenart! The photo is taken at the top of the Oslo Opera House with the Oslo “skyline” in the background. Would Anne have liked this place? #lmmontgomerymonday #lmmontgomery #anneofgreengables #annefrabjørkely #kristinaquintano #retranslation #faithfultranslation #norway🇳🇴 #oslo #oslooperahouse

Have you read Bambi? I didn’t even realize it was a book! The Disney movie was my first ever VHS movie in the 90s. I remembered it as a sad and beautiful story. Reading this book more than confirmed that. It’s a story of the circle of life of the animals of the forest. And the animals feel like animals rather than strictly human characters. 🦌🐇🐿️ This story made a lasting impact on me as a child. I will even call deer bambis when l don’t remember the word for deer in some language. But I would say this is a crossover story that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. Did you know that Bambi was originally written in German? The original is called Bambi: Eine Lebensgeschichte aus dem Walde (Bambi: A Life Story from the Woods). I haven’t checked, what title English translation have used. This Finnish translation is called simply Bambi. Check out Bambi in your language! What has this to do with Montgomery? Well, this book is translated by @kaisaranta81, who is the translator of the Finnish Emily of New Moon retranslation coming up this summer! Nature truly comes alive in this beautiful translation, which bodes well for what we expect of an Emily translation. The new Finnish Emily will also have a cover by @nuppuprintcompany just like this gorgeous Bambi cover. But nothing can compete in cuteness with these Bambi illustrations! This picture was taken in my local woods, where I regularly see deers when I go running in the evenings. Deers have been very active lately. 🤍🦌🤍🦌🤍🦌🤍🦌🤍🦌🤍🦌🤍🦌🤍🦌🤍 #felixsalten #bambi #lmmontgomery #emilyofnewmoon #retranslation #nature #deer #spring #illustration #circleoflife

While waiting for the new Finnish translation of Emily of New Moon due to be published in June, I read the new Finnish translation of F.H. Burnett’s A Little Princess published in the same classics series and translated by the same translator, @kaisaranta81. These editions are just so lovely! The translation feels very fresh, just like a translation should be. The language and style are just the right kind of modern but still period appropriate, so that you barely notice you are reading a translation. The last time I read A Little Princess was when I was a teenager and binged all girls’ classics I could get my hands on. The version available then was a revised version of Toini Swan’s original 1912 translation. A Little Princess is still a lovely story, thou a bit too fairy-tale-like and didactic. I still admire little Sara Crewe’s courage. Sara Crewe’s story is a Cinderella story, but it also shares a lot of elements with Anne of Green Gables, mainly the power of imagination. Just like Anne, Sara imagines things when reality is hard, and this is what enables her to carry on. Imagination seems to have been a common theme in girls’ stories from the early 1900s. A Little Princess was originally published in 1911, only 3 years after Anne of Green Gables. Interestingly, the last chapter of A Little Princess is called “Anne”. Anne is a beggar girl that Sara meets on the street outside a bakery while she is poor and hungry herself. When Sara gets back her riches, she goes back to the bakery to ask the baker to give bread to poor children and bill her. Turns out the baker has adopted the beggar girl, whose name is revealed to be Anne on the last page of the book. #lmmontgomery #fhburnett #alittleprincess #pikkuprinsessa #kaisaranta @arthousekustannus #girlsclassics #girlsfiction #girlsstories #saracrewe #retranslation #newtranslation

In Randy Pausch's last lecture he talks about the upside of being ridden hard by his football coach. Negative feedback or criticism is not easy to hear. We take it personally. But if we step back and reframe it we can see what in this bit of feedback may be of value to us and to also remember that people making time to give us feedback is a sign of our worth. Loved ones often provide input in harsh ways because that's the only way that they know how, and that's safe for them. But feedback is a sign that we matter. #feedback #negativecriticism #perspective #retranslation

Happy upcoming #lmmontgomerymonday! What do you think about this 1940s version of Anne and Marilla? This is the first edition of Mimi Sverdrup Lunden’s Norwegian retranslation of Anne of Green Gables from 1940, which is the most reprinted and thus most long-lived Norwegian translation. Illustrator unknown. For this retranslation, the title was changed from Anne fra Birkely to Anne fra Bjørkely because of the Norwegian spelling reform that aimed to differentiate Norwegian spelling from Danish. Both titles mean Anne from Birch Hill. Sverdrup Lunden’s translation is an abridged one with a socialist and feminist agenda according to research by Susan Erdmann and Barbara Gawrońska Pettersson. For example, Anne’s imagination and references to religion are downplayed, which results in a loss of many of the nature descriptions and Montgomery’s esthetic language. Dreams and fancies were not in line with Sverdrup Lunden’s idea of the empowered girl she wanted to present to young female readers. This book was published in the series Aschehougs ulvalgte for piker (Aschhoug’s Selection for Girls). On the back cover, some other books in this publisher series are listed. They include Johanna Spyri’s Heidi and some original Norwegian books. The book photographed is from the Montgomery archives at Robertson Library at UPEI. ❤️ #lmmontgomery #anneofgreengables #annefrabjørkely #aschehougsutvalgteforpiker #aschehoug #aschehougforlag @aschehoug #norway🇳🇴 #mimisverdruplunden #retranslation #abridgedtranslation #manipulation #girlhood #anneshirley #marillacuthbert #vintagebookcover

Earlier this year, I interviewed Eva Ström @aevakstrom, the translator of the new Swedish translation of Anne of Green Gables that was published in April by @aglaktuq. Now the interview is published in the Journal of L.M. Montgomery studies by @lmminstitute. Check it out in the link in my bio! I asked Eva for example what inspired the retranslation, what part Karin Jensen’s beloved old translation played in the translation process, and why the iconic title Anne på Grönkulla was preserved and what other titles were considered. It is apparent that this retranslation project was a labor of love for Montgomery’s original text and the PEI landscapes! 🤍 #lmmontgomerymonday #lmmontgomery #anneofgreengables #annepågrönkulla #evaström #aglaktuq #karinlidforssjensen #retranslator #retranslation #translation #interview #sweden🇸🇪

Happy #lmmontgomerymonday! This week’s prompt is “LMM, photography, and movies”, so let’s take a look at the most recent Nordic Montgomery cover, which is one of the few to use a photograph. The micro publishing house @aglaktuq released Eva Ström’s brand new retranslation of Anne of Green Gables in April. I was lucky enough to chat with @aevakstrom about the translation recently. The results of that will turn up later, but the story of the cover I saved for you guys here on #bookstagram. Eva and the rest of the team at Aglaktuq wanted the cover to focus on Anne as a child, a child that looks like a child, unlike some of the older covers. Eva’s granddaughter Dagmar got to model Anne, dressed in Anne’s signature straw hat and a checked dress made by Eva for the occasion. A black and white photo was chosen to draw attention away from Anne’s red hair, which is so strongly associated with the character Pippi Longstocking in Sweden. Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi and her red hair was inspired by Anne, but bold Pippi is indeed a very different character to our sensitive and thoughtful Anne. The cover designed by @agnesstenqvist definitely stands out compared to previous covers. It is the only portrait-like cover so far, though there have been some other recent ones using photographs both in Sweden and Finland. My favorite part of the cover is the background pattern foregrounding the crucial part nature plays in Ström’s unabridged translation. The same pattern is repeated inside the book on the title page and at the beginning of each chapter. As for the back cover copy, it begins with the famous quote about Anne not being wanted because she is not a boy, which highlights the feminist message of the book that makes it current in today’s world as Eva notes. Just like the black and white photo, the back cover copy focuses on the vulnerability of the child. This is in line with that the translation gives Swedish readers full access to Anne’s contemplative side for the first time. #lmmontgomery #anneofgreengables #annepågrönkulla #sweden🇸🇪 #aglaktuq #retranslation #nyöversättning #unabridgedtranslation #bookcover #photography #aoggsw

It’s not every day you get to read one of your favorite books in a new translation! Over Easter, I read the brand new Swedish translation of Anne of Green Gables by Eva Ström @aevakstrom, which was very kindly gifted to me by the publisher @aglaktuq. As Ström writes in her translator’s afterword, her aim was to make a complete translation as faithful to Montgomery’s original as possible. This includes faithfulness to Montgomery’s poetic style of writing with long, winding, beautiful, lavish sentences, especially when she is describing the surrounding nature. Having a translation that includes every familiar little scene without any omissions is great. But the style is what makes this Swedish version a truly wonderful reading experience. Maud would have been thrilled to know that her text was translated by a translator who has also tried her hand on Shakespeare’s poetry. Another great merit of this new translation, which was partly missing in the old translation, is consistency in translating set phrases typical of certain characters. Marilla’s “fiddlesticks” is now consistently “snicksnack”, while Rachel’s “that’s what” is “det är då ett som är säkert”. Most glad I am to finally have a translation of Anne’s famous “scope of imagination”, which has become “utrymme för fantasin” (literaly “space for imagination”). Readers may wonder, whether they will encounter place names familiar from Karin Lindforss Jensen’s iconic 1909 translation. As we see form the title, Green Gables has remained Grönkulla (Green Hill). Maybe Gröna gavlarnas Anne would have simply have sounded too weird in Swedish. In this way, the new translation echoes the beloved old one. But other names adapted by Jensen have been retranslated by Ström in ways that better capture Montgomery’s original ideas. Anne’s Lake of Shining Waters is now “Sjön med det lysande vattnet”. Having seen the real life Lake of Shining Waters on PEI, this certainly seems a more appropriate name than “Mörka speglande vågen” (Dark mirroring wave) that Swedish readers used to know the lake as. (Continues in comments)

Back to Iceland! For several decades, only abridged translations of the Anne books were published by various Icelandic publishers, but since 2012, the publisher @astriki_utgafa owned by Ásta Gísladóttir @inannaisdead started publishing new translations by Sigríður Lára Sigurjónsdóttir @ssigga. These are modern unabridged faithful translations, and all books are included, not only four like before. Only some traces of the old translations remain: Anne is still called Anna and Green Gables remains Grænuhlíð (Green Hill), which is the well known name in all Nordic countries. Otherwise, the titles of the translations remain very faithful to the original titles. Recently, Ástríki published the eight book, which is the first ever Icelandic translation of Rainbow Valley. This huge and amazing project by some passionate women is now nearing its end! Rilla of Ingleside is next, and perhaps also The Blythes are Quoted is still to come. The cover illustrations for these books are from various sources. The first one is the now classic Ben Stahl Anne, which many probably recognize. The next two are Gibson Girls mimicking the original first editions, while the rest are either old drawings or new ones made for this project. Judging from the simple and stylish covers, these translations target an adult or crossover audience. That matches Montgomery’s audience at the time the originals were published as well as the wide audience reading Montgomery today. #lmmontgomerymonday #lmmontgomery #anneofgreengables #annaígrænuhlíð #astrikiutgafa #iceland🇮🇸 #retranslation #retranslated #newtranslation #faithfultranslation #unabridged #crossoverbooks

This is the full set of Finnish Anne books in the so called red oval editions that seem to be the most loved editions, because many generations of Finnish girls grew up with these cover designs reprinted in several editions from the early 1960s to the early 1990s. These were the first ones I read too, having borrowed them from a friend who had inherited them from her mother. The books in the picture look a bit different from each other because they are printed in different decades. The oldest editions have a fabriqy feel to them while the newer ones are glossy. These cover designs were first used in 1960 to 1964 when WSOY published revised and reviewed editions (uudistettu ja tarkistettu suomennos) of the old Anne translations as well as a first translation of Rilla. In reality, these editions were revised and abridged versions of the earlier translations. Almost like new translations. The revision process was carried out by the children’s book editor Inka Makkonen, who did an enormous job revising all of the publishers’ old girls’ classic translations alongside her other duties. But she appreciated Montgomery’s books a lot, so hopefully it was a pleasant task for her. The first four illustrations are by Leena Puranen, while the last two are by Maija Karma. Harvoin saa mielitekoja perustella tieteellisen tutkimuksen tekemisellä 😎 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I bought this beautiful new translation of Sense and Sensibility which has a rare but amazing detail: the name of the translator is printed on the cover ❤️ This is almost never done, but translators would deserve it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #kerstijuva #kääntäjänäkyväksi #kääntäminen #suomentaja #uudelleensuomennos #uusisuomennos #janeausten #senseandsensibility #järkijatunteet #elinawarsta #translation #retranslation #bookstagram #bookish #booktography #bookaesthetics #beautifulbook #coverart #bookcover #kirjagramsuomi #kirjagram #kirjainsta #lukeminen #lukeminenkannattaaaina

#iorestoacasa #iamstayinghome To face positively the lockdown, we are sharing insights on our artists’ work and video streamings (video works, performance, interviews) coming from Galleria Fumagalli’s archive. Last Friday we shared a special focus on the work by German artist Peter Welz, featuring the video of the project “Retranslation | final unfinished portrait (francis bacon) | figure inscribing figure | [take 01 - 03]”, made in collaboration with William Forsythe and first presented at Musée du Louvre in 2006. American choreographer William Forsythe was asked by Welz to transfer into his dance the dynamic structure inherent to the last portrait by Francis Bacon, found unfinished on an easel in the Irish painter's studio after his death in 1992. Peter Welz filmed him from two different frontal perspectives and one from above. 🖼 Frames from Peter Welz, “Retranslation | final unfinished portrait (francis bacon) | figure inscribing figure | [take 01 - 03]” in collaboration with William Forsythe. —— 🔒 Write us a direct message to see the full video or visit our website 👉🏻 LINK IN BIO 👈🏻 —— @peter.welz @william_forsythe_ #peterwelz #williamforsythe #retranslation #portrait #performance #dance #choreography #francisbacon #contemporaryart #galleriafumagalli #galleriafumagallicollection

Peter Welz I Am a Cage, In Search of a Bird 📆 from 26 October 📍MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Chiang Mai, Thailand —— On the occasion of the Unfolding Kafka Festival, visual artist Peter Welz presents his first ‘portrait’ in collaboration with choreographer William Forsythe: the retranslation of the unfinished portrait left by Francis Bacon. The artist conceived a synchronized three channels installation providing a link between contemporary dance and the moving figure in space in conjunction with the work by Francis Bacon. This “Retranslation” was firstly shown at Musée du Louvre, Paris in 2005 and was the subject of the first solo exhibition by Peter Welz at Galleria Fumagalli in 2009. After this first solo, the gallery dedicated to him other two exhibitions (2014, 2016). —— #Repost @peter.welz with @get_repost @unfoldingkafkafestival #peterwelz #williamforsythe #francisbacon #retranslation #maiiamcontemporaryartmuseum #thailand #soloexhibition #artmuseum #galleriafumagalli #galleriafumagallimilano
