My adaptation of a poster, originally designed by Barry Zaid, in celebration of tonight’s concert by Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets at the DeMontfort Hall, Leicester. The original poster was created for Pink Floyd’s concert of May 12th, 1967 held at the then three months old Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s South Bank. Games for May was described as a "Space age relaxation for the climax of spring – electronic composition, colour and image projection, girls, and the Pink Floyd". This gig showcased Pink Floyd’s pioneering use of quadrophonic sound with speakers in the four corners of the Hall, for which the sound distribution was controlled by a single joystick. Dubbed The Azimuth Co-ordinator, it allowed the operator to effectively move sound around the auditorium, making Pink Floyd’s Southbank Centre appearance the first ever surround sound gig. As a climax to their performance, Pink Floyd cranked up a bubble machine and threw flowers flowers into the crowd. It was a big finish that left its mark in more ways than one, with the mixture of petals and water permanently marking a great number of the Hall’s plush new leather seats leading to Pink Floyd being banned from the Queen Elizabeth Hall! 1967's See Emily Play was Pink Floyd's second single (non-album in the UK, but included on The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn in the US). The 'second title' of the song is Games For May, named after a Pink Floyd concert in the Queen Elizabeth Hall earlier in 1967 (see my note of July 30). The Emily in the song was/is apparently the Honourable Emily Young, today a well known sculptor, but in those days nicknamed 'the psychedelic schoolgirl' at the UFO Club in London.
