The plastic in our oceans has all kinds of toxic effects on both ocean and human life, but the sheer size of this disaster has scientists and conservationists struggling to develop a sustainable solution. There is such a thing called a Garbage Island in the North Pacific Ocean. It is a place where garbage from all different bodies of water pile up because of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The motion created by the gyre draws the waste to it where it eventually gets trapped. This poses a big threat to our environment because as long as we don’t change our habits, this island will only grow bigger and bigger. Many organizations are already trying to clean this patch of waste but the best thing we can do as people is to try to reduce our waste by using more recyclable materials and by being more conscious of where we put our trash. #climatechange #environment #garbageisland

Introducing the newest addition to my home that allows me to be more environmentally friendly. A compost box! The gardeners even came by the day before I got it, and so I am able to start my compost off right with fresh grass as well as food scraps. I got this from a neighbor on my local Buy Nothing group. As I’d said earlier, Maldives always surprises and this time it wasn’t pleasant. While I still remain true to my word, for this is one of the most beautiful places in the world, it is no longer pristine. A thread of good news: 🐅 The Tiger population has increased by 40% in seven years, according to a recent report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). There were 3,200 tigers in 2015, it is now estimated to be 4,500 in 2022; that's the first growth in decades. 🌿 Dr. Rajani Srinivasan of Tarleton State University in Texas, along with her team of researchers, found that heavy or too small microplastics can be effectively removed using okra, aloe, cacti, fenugreek, and psyllium's polysaccharide extracts. All of the plants’ polysaccharide compounds worked just as well as the commercial-grade flocculants typically used to remove microplastics. 🌊 The Ocean Cleanup - a nonprofit org., announced that till now, 108,526 kilograms of plastic had been collected from the GPGP – more than the combined weight of two and a half Boeing 737-800s. Current latest favourite release by @theburninghellband! Garbage Island is such a fun record. I remember seeing this band a few times around 2008, at Hillside (with @jennybirdcity and @michaelcduguay in the band) and in Toronto…maybe in Peterborough too. It’s been awhile, fuzzy memories!
