Happy Friday! Here is a rare photograph from our new SGCT Publication - Beyond The Lens, Discovering The Photographers in Sheffield General Cemetery…. James Montgomery, 1771-1854, one of Sheffield’s most respected, influential and best loved citizens, spent many long and tedious hours sitting for portraits, profiles and statues due to the demand for his image in publications and on the walls of learned institutions. With the advent of photography his likeness was recorded in minutes in 1850, as shown in this image, the only known photograph of him in existence. James Montgomery had a statue at Sheffield General Cemetery inside the rotunda outside the Anglican Chapel, just off Cemetery Road. The statue and his remains were moved to Sheffield Cathedral in 1971 because the Cemetery was in such a state of disrepair. A freight train hauling coal, which is referred to as the Fast Freight in many newspaper articles, arrived at Thompsontown Station around four that morning. The eastbound freight train was running behind schedule when it arrived and those on board were aware another train, known as the Fast Line East, was expected to arrive at the station at any moment. The Fast Line East had left Pittsburgh at 8:30 the night before, headed for Philadelphia. The freight train had just arrived at the station to refill with water and the flagman got off and ran to the end of the train to unfurl the warning flag. The flagman made it roughly fifty yards past the end of the freight train when the Fast Line East loomed out of the fog and darkness. The engineer, who did not have a stop scheduled at the Thompsontown Station, had the Fast Line East running at full speed, believing the tracks were clear of other trains. The engineer of the Fast Line East spotted the flagman, applied brakes and placed the train in reverse in an attempt to reduce the damage. However, it was too late and the Fast Line East slammed into the rear of the stopped freight train. It hit with enough force that the engine of the Fast Line East crashed through one coal car and half of another. The baggage and three passenger cars of the Fast Line East were smashed together and forced into the tinder car. Within moments the cars caught fire. White Bronze Wednesday This zinkie marks the final resting place of Ebenezer Leach in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Southbridge, MA. Ebenezer Leach was born to Martin and Salina Leach in Putnam, CT in 1837/8. In 1859 he married Lucretia Smith, and in 1860 the couple was living in Southbridge with Ebenezer’s older brother Martin. Ebenezer served in Company H in the 34th Massachusetts Infantry during the US Civil War. He was discharged for disability in late 1862. The Leaches had at least four children: Otis, Thomas, Arnold, and Lettie. Ebenezer and his sons worked in one of the many cotton mills in the area. Washington Tower at Mount Auburn Cemetery was built in 1852-53 after a design by Dr. Jacob Bigelow. Gridley Bryant came up with the architectural plans. Bigelow and Henry Dearborn planned Mount Auburn from the start in the 1820s to be a picturesque garden cemetery and in England many country estates had an observation tower. The tower is built of Quincy Granite and offers great views of the Charles River leading into Boston. Mount Auburn was a huge attraction in the 19th century (and continues to be) and the second photo is part of a series of stereo views that were sold in the 1870s. The second battle of Marne was the last major German attack of the western front during world War I The purpose of the attack had been to end the conflict. The Battle of fismes is unique to the history of war one because the extreme violence and street fighting that occurred, as well as the presence of stormtrooper attacks and flamethrowers. All of this culminated in the total destruction of Fismas around 90% more than the neighboring Reims. Over the course of just a month, Fismes would be lost in one again five times by the allied forces. At the end of the battle on the two engaged countrysides, Company B, 112th Infantry from Meadville, PA who had 151 members who were assigned to duty in France, lost ten soldiers and 48 injured. The survivors formed a group that would forever be bounded together. This group was called the Last Man Society, formed by Lt. Col. R. Bruce Campbell and Fredrick L. Pond. The name of this group was later changed to the Société de Fismes in 1948 to signify the group’s connection to the City in France. This group was to meet regularly in remembrance of their efforts, and the last man of the club was to drink a bottle of wine which was Barton & Guestier "Royal Purple Burgundy" brought back from France by Lt. Pond. Ignatius Joseph Maggio was the final member of the society. He died on May 12, 1995, at the age of 100. He decided not to open the bottle, instead choosing to leave it unopened.
