The past 2 nights I put cages over my tulips and wrapped the cages with blankets. Temps dropped to 29 / 30 degrees.... I was an overprotective mother. I like to use dahlias in my matrix plantings. They are divas and require a little extra attention- staking, fertilizing, dead heading, lifting in the winter. But they’re worth the extra effort. This Species Interaction Diagram records bee species found in Somerville and the flowers they land on. It is part of the research being done in Somerville’s Pollinator Action Plan aimed at increasing habitat in a densely populated city. The plan, coming out this summer, will be the first of its kind for an urban environment and we hope it will be useful in increasing biodiversity regionally. Pale purple coneflower (Echinacea pallida) is one of my favorite perennials. Elegant, shuttlecock-shaped flowers dance on top of long slender stems in late June and July. The seed heads persist and are a favorite of finches. It pairs well with Gaura 'Whirling Butterflies'. Note, it does self-seed around the garden.
