Nothing like seeing two dreams in the same day (time). One short movie, so cinema verite that it breaks your heart. The other, an experiment that breaches both docu and fiction, reality and dreaming,with a visual poetry, aural attentiveness. Making a resonant collage. Given that the #DharamshalaInternationalFilmFestival is an international film fest, I should be watching international films, but day 1 found me as usual drawn to Himalayan stories and then staying there only. Heh heh. #GreenBlackberries, a simple, honest film of a bright girl's journey to school and how a dream of a scholarship can get stuck at one blip of nature's turn. The dream and the hardship go saath saath. Prithviraj Dasgupta, the filmmaker's first feature film, gives context 'Our crew went to shoot an independent documentary in the remotest villages of North East India in March 2018 and found that there are areas with just one Government Primary School for 20 villages, often with a single teacher who has bare minimum education. The terrain in these areas is relentlessly hilly. Some children walk up to 20 km in this unforgiving land, while others row up-or down-river for 3 hours, then walk up to 10 km to get to school. These are 3 to 13-year olds we are talking about. Yet, despite the challenges these kids haven’t lost their hopes and dreams. And their story is the substance and splendor of our film.' After watching three pahaadi narratives, like the tactile withdrawal one feels extricating oneself from a loved one or space, I then moved to watching a visual experiment made with ras, dil and patchily, a dreamy thehrav. Yashaswini Raghunandan's THAT CLOUD NEVER LEFT. Grant Miller's Vox review gives the skeletal here, 'The premise of #ThatCloudNeverLeft revolves around a small village in India where inhabitants make toys and tools out of recycled 35mm film from Bollywood. Other stories intertwine: One woman tries to get a hold of her husband who left town, a group of boys look for an elusive ruby, and the village eagerly anticipates a total lunar eclipse. Raghunandan uses this as a springboard to craft a montage of beautiful images and sound design that ranges from roaring to restful.'
