We had similar comments regarding Mollie starting growth hormone - ‘there’s nothing wrong with her height’ and ‘she’s perfect as she is’. Yes she is!! But her wee body needs growth hormone! Just like someone with diabetes needs insulin or how Mollies sister Grace needs thyroxine to replace what her body doesn’t make. Since starting growth hormone replacement we have saw huge growth with Mollie. She’s still small but I think she’s grown about 5cm since starting growth hormone in November!! This growth has changed her physical appearance a lot! She is all legs like a baby giraffe and looks a bit too skinny having grown so suddenly! But the biggest difference in Mollie is her energy levels. Mollie has never had great energy. Any walks we went on she would need carried. She would tire easily. She had no muscle mass at all. What is the most challenging aspect of hypopituitarism for our family? Growth hormone injections. Not only is it hard to get my son to sit still for them, there are also frequently pen shortages. Many families have to fight with insurance to even get growth hormone covered. Overall, it can be quite frustrating! We have been using Humatrope for a few months since Norditropin has been out of stock for nearly 18 months. We have also used Genotropin in the past. It’s been a bit of a learning curve for setting up the Humatrope pen. In my opinion, Norditropin is by far the easiest to administer so I hope we can go back to that one eventually. Sure do love this girl. She had an appointment with the Children's Mercy Endocrine clinic here in town this afternoon. Now that my treatment and transplant are done we can focus on next steps with her growth hormone journey. She had labs drawn to get some genetic testing done to make sure nothing else is going on besides the growth hormone deficiency. It took a while for insurance to approve the blood test. She also needed another xray to look at her bone age. After we get results we can proceed with what we want to do. She said she wants to at least try the growth hormone injections and see how it goes. The recommendation is 4 years but she isn't sure if she wants to do them that long. Her doctor said we can do a shorter period of time if we want. Since this will involve injecting her every day, it will be up to Nadia how long she wants to do it. She should be about my height (I'm 5'2") when all is said and done. This time, she did it ALL BY HERSELF! 🤩 During her two and a half years on a feeding tube, there were several times I thought she’d never eat on her own. It was so hard. I did a talking story this morning for autism awareness and as I started talking, I started crying. This is about the only good screenshot where i'm not ugly crying 🙈. I now don't feel like I should share it. I sloped off quietly. But as more and more share their personal journeys with such honestly I feel I should say SOMETHING. . Advocating here is getting harder to keep our privacy and not share things that perhaps it would be preferred by my children that I didn't. Its not all my story to tell. And I don't want to disappoint them. But I have 100% valued the support here and love being apart of this community. . As i learn more and in turn, learn more about who my children are, Autism is more and more just one part of our lives. . It's come with acceptance and working through what are day to day challenges are and we then put strategies and support in place along the way. The focus isn't on any one diagnosis. If that makes any sense! But yet that diagnosis is so important. We don't worry about autism. We just want to enjoy life, love and learn and want everyone to be accepting of others and all differences. . I worry more about living a healthy life these days. This beautiful girl got the call today- she did "fail" the growth hormone stim test- so she has Growth Hormone Deficiency. This doesn't just affect height but so much more. Next up will be an MRI per insurance request to check the pituitary gland and then prior Auth for the treatment which is a daily injection of the synthetic hormone so that she develops correctly! 💉 This is much like someone who can't produce another important hormone and has medicine for it - hers is just the growth hormone - so it'll be that treatment. Survival mode activated The last 3 days have been nothing short of a nightmare. We are barely evading hospital at this point. Elodie held out being poorly whilst we were away but hours after we touched down, we were on route to collect her from school early due to her quickly declining. Only the basic and necessary is being done. We are roughing it because I haven't got anything more in me right now, I'm not 100% either. The amount Els has been unwell is increasing so much. I have lined up an appointment with the immunology team up at London. Instead of keep throwing her on antibiotics which ruin her insides, I want to know what is causing these back to back illnesses. Yesterday I had a breakthrough in the darkness. Els Metabolic consultant called and honestly thought it was going to be a basic hello/goodbye appointment, see you next year type of thing. It wasn't. I was heard and backed and things are in motion for a virtual MDT and a short stay admission to get Els looked over and so I don't have to keep chasing, fighting and repeating what I'm saying and be heard by all her relevant teams. She has told me they would like to explore the option of inserting a portacath. A device placed under general anaesthetic that sits in Elodies chest under the skin and will enable us I.V access any time without fishing for veins and traumatising her further. This idea has been tossed around for a long time now but with Els increased illnesses and admissions, it seems feasible to look into. As much as I hate it, I'm happy if it'll help Elodie.
