What is the most challenging aspect of hypopituitarism for our family? Growth hormone injections. Not only is it hard to get my son to sit still for them, there are also frequently pen shortages. Many families have to fight with insurance to even get growth hormone covered. Overall, it can be quite frustrating! We have been using Humatrope for a few months since Norditropin has been out of stock for nearly 18 months. We have also used Genotropin in the past. It’s been a bit of a learning curve for setting up the Humatrope pen. In my opinion, Norditropin is by far the easiest to administer so I hope we can go back to that one eventually. At the end of the day, the struggles are worth it to see my son growing happy and healthy. When you are newly diagnosed it can seem so incredibly daunting. There are so many questions. One of the questions I had, was how can I store my medication out of reach of my daughter. Jenn said she uses a storage case, similar to those used when children go to boarding school. It works brilliantly. It's large enough to store all the medication I need and I know it's safely locked and no little people can access it! Results I got the call from London yesterday regarding Els recent tests. All seemed OK except her liver function was high (121 instead of normal range 55) so more investigations will be done by other teams to check her meds arent causing toxicity. One more test needs completing also from endocrine side of things which is a short synacthen test for cortisol. I have an appointment with immunology today to speak about Els recent back to back illnesses. Aside from all this, Els has brightened right up over the weekend! She's had a lovely Easter and her appetite has returned and she cannot get enough of her beloved banana and coconut pouches again! The mood is much lighter and I firmly believe that when Els is OK, everything else feels much more ok. Even when there's tons to juggle, along as she's feeling better, it all becomes a lot easier to manage. As someone who is #visuallyimpaired i am often told I am unfortunate for being disabled. I’ve lived like this my entire life.if there was one thing I’d want people to know about chronic illness and disability it would be this…. What inconveniences me more are my chronic illnesses which caused the sight impairment. I’m probably splitting hairs there though. However, Disability is not a dirty word. It describes someone who lives differently because of a physical or mental IMPAIRMENT. We don’t ask for sympathy, we just want understanding and empathy. Not all disabilities are visible. Most chronic illnesses and disabilities have INVISIBLE SYMPTOMS! We don’t need to tell you our whole MEDICAL history to prove our disability. People with chronic illness/ disabilities learn to put on a BRAVE FACE and function in extreme fatigue/pain. You never know what battle someone is fighting so always be KIND. Just because we don’t always look sick doesn’t mean we are FAKING our illnesses/disability. Every day looks different. One day we could be hiking up a 650ft hill, the next we are bed ridden with chronic fatigue. Just because we aren’t acting unwell doesn’t mean we are cured. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and their opinions and are on their own journey however. People learn in their own time. But please don’t shame us for our bodies or the fact we can do something one day and not the other. I can’t begin to tell you how terrible of a feeling this is… I feel like the last few weeks have been a blur. The doctors appointments, all the tests, new doctors, new diagnoses. It’s just been SO MUCH. I’ve always mostly had problems with my bones, & I know I keep saying this but it’s really new territory for me and I’m doing my best to navigate it and learn as much as I can in order to be able to help myself emotionally and physically. & this is just one Yesterday I met with my new endocrinologist. I haven’t seen endo in many years. The doctor was very nice & thorough and explained to me what Empty Sella Syndrome or “hypopituitarism” is (my newest diagnosis) and how I most likely developed it. ESS is rare but to have symptoms is even more rare and I have many symptoms. He said I most likely had a brain tumor, and as that brain tumor grew, it ended up flattening my pituitary gland. And that the brain tumor must have gone away on its own but it still left behind tumor matter and that’s what they’re seeing on my brain MRI quite literally squishing my pituitary gland. Most likely I had the brain tumor for a really long time and I just wasn’t aware of it; we will never really know. But something happened when this all started 2 years ago. How crazy and miraculous and magical is it that my body somehow got rid of this brain tumor on its own?!? BUT, for the rest of my life I will have to take medication to replace what this syndrome has taken from my body. That’s the sucky part but my doctor said thankfully there are meds to replace what my body now can’t produce on its own. The pituitary gland is a really important part of the human body, for such a little tiny thing. I’m not going to lie, it’s been hard for me to grasp all of this. I feel like I’m “less” of a woman… even though I know deep down being a woman has nothing to do with any of this. I am just as much of a woman now as I was before this happened to me. But I will allow myself to feel my emotions.
