Kennedy is going to be on @wxyzdetroit tonight at 6 pm!!! I asked her several times if she was okay with it, if she wanted to be on camera, including her whole face, and she didnā€™t hesitate to say yes!!! She made me so freaking proud. It was really hard to hold back all the tears watching her speak. She continues to be so brave and so resilient and I canā€™t believe I get to be her mama. @sarahmichals thank you so much for coming and spending your afternoon with us! Iā€™ve been speaking to a lot of Sepsis Survivors recently and one thing Iā€™ve noticed is that a lot of the signs and symptoms of one thing can be the same as another, and sometimes we focus on just one thing when thereā€™s possibly lots going on. Remember: youā€™re not just a Sepsis Survivor, youā€™re a human. You can have more than your ā€˜recoveryā€™ going on. šŸ„— Maybe youā€™re not eating right and thatā€™s causing some symptoms to become worse. šŸ˜¢ Maybe youā€™re isolating and the lack of human connection / fresh air / sunlight / movement is making things more difficult to deal with. šŸ§¬ Maybe your hormones have taken a hit and you just canā€™t be bothered keep up with self care ā€¦ or your anxiety is so bad that you canā€™t think straight. šŸ¦  Maybe the infection that caused the sepsis is still there and causing you problems. Keep an open mind, and keep up with your self care šŸ˜ Me: āœ… Septic shock survivor šŸ¤’ āœ… PTSD šŸ˜± āœ… Post Sepsis Syndrome šŸ˜” āœ… Recovering from QFever and Rickettsia šŸ¦Ÿ āœ… Peri-Menopausal šŸ§¬ #septicshockawareness #sepsis #sepsisawareness #sepsissurvivor #septicshock #septicshocksurvivor #qfever #rickettsia #rmsf #menopause #postsepsissyndrome #pss #ptsd #recovery #sepsisrecovery #autoimmunedisease #depression #nutrition #sepsiscoach #lyme #lymedisease #tenerife #lifeaftersepsis #sepsiskills #sepsisresearch #rockymountainspottedfever #spottedfever #typhus #wellness #wellnesscoach

I want to spread awareness of sepsis everywhere! Before I contracted sepsis I never thought it could be anything like Iā€™d experienced. I had ALL of these symptomsā€¦. I always felt cold (I was in full blown hypothermia when the paramedics got to me), I had a urine infection, I could see paper birds on a string on my window (which werenā€™t there), I felt so so tired like Iā€™d never felt such tiredness before, I couldnā€™t look after my daughter, but because I was so confused I didnā€™t even think this was sepsis, I was in excruciating pain in my joints and my head, I also was short of breath and only had 15% of one lung working. I then went into multi organ failure. My pancreas, lungs, kidneys and liver. My heart also started failing and my feet were mottling. I was so close to death. They had to intubate me in the house due to my breathing being so shallow. I was placed into an induced coma while they pumped me full of god knows what meds (cancer meds also) to try and save me. I had a treatment called ECMO which essentially saved my life but had to be transferred to Bristol for this and then they didnā€™t know if I would survive the journey. I woke up and couldnā€™t move one finger. I had to stay on the ventilator with a tracheotomy in my throat. I couldnā€™t speak and couldnā€™t move. How frustrating this was I couldnā€™t begin to tell you. Even if I manage to help one person, that makes me happy because nobody deserves to go through this. Please share and make people aware of the real dangers of sepsis. #SepsisAwareness #sepsissurvivor #sepsis

Day 1 Post a Selfie šŸ¦“ Maryland girl here. My name is Jackie and Iā€™ve had hEDS all my life but didnā€™t get diagnosed till my daughters did. When I was 54. Better late than never I guess. šŸ˜‚ I also have POTS, Crohnā€™s, osteoporosis (Prednisone didnā€™t help- I told my doctors no more steroids. Iā€™m done!) Hashimotoā€™s thyroiditis, dental problems, and half a colon. The other half was removed during an emergency surgery 3 years ago after my colon ruptured from undiagnosed diverticulitis and sent me into septic shock. I was intubated and flown to Baltimore for life saving surgery. I was in respiratory failure and heading into heart failure as they wheeled me into the OR. Sepsis almost destroyed my lungs, and half my hair fell out. I lost iron and need dental work to repair the damage. I had to learn to walk again. I used to use a wheelchair and scooter from 2014-2021, somehow losing half my colon and intensive rehab both in patient and out patient, has helped me walk better and longer. Weird huh? As if my doctors didnā€™t have enough to scratch their heads about me. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ I am a true zebra through and through. šŸ¦“ I work part-time as a journalist, Iā€™ve written for the Washington Post, AARP, and Readerā€™s Digest. My most recent article came out in Costco Connection today, on Ehlers-DanlosšŸ¤—. I love to swim, for pain relief. And I work out to strengthen my muscles to help with the POTS and EDS. As I get older, neither one gets better. So Iā€™m trying to do my best to stay upright and keep both feet on THIS planet šŸ˜‚ Iā€™ve been disabled since 2012. ā™æļøšŸ’ŖšŸ» Iā€™m also a sepsis advocate and an Ehlers-Danlos advocate. Itā€™s okay to not be okay. This has been our mantra these past few days as Kennedy has started to understand what happened to her. Her bandages came off on Monday, and itā€™s the first time sheā€™s seen the right side of her face since the necrotizing fasciitis started. As you can imagine it has lead to some pretty heavy conversations and emotions. I think a person, especially a child, can only put on a brave face for so long. And thatā€™s okay. Weā€™re going to feel all the feels we need. Thatā€™s part of the healing process. ā™„ļø While itā€™s been a tougher week emotionally, weā€™re trying to celebrate all the wonderful moments weā€™ve had. Exciting news! Our Sepsis in Schools Education Campaign is live, and we need your help! Are you aware that every year, 75,000 children are hospitalized due to sepsis? Shockingly, around 7,000 of them lose their lives, while 38% of survivors endure lifelong disabilities. Awareness can make all the difference, which is why we've initiated a campaign aimed at providing vital sepsis education to classrooms, school administrators, and nurses. Getting involved is simple ā€“ visit our site (link in profile) Our newly launched Sepsis in Schools Education page has all the tools you need, including: - A customizable letter to the principal explaining your concerns and sharing the available resources - A Signs of Sepsis in Children poster for display in school nursesā€™ offices - Access to our comprehensive K-12 curriculum, Signs of Sepsis animated video and Ouch, I Got a Cut, our picture book on infection prevention for young readers. Head to our website now to get started. Thank you for joining us. Is this a joke? šŸ˜€ No, you see it well. the silicon pad is outside the šŸ§¦ sock now, fixed with adhesive tape ā€¦ This really looks so stupidšŸ˜‚ After a few days testing, I couldnā€™t bear it, my foot was burning of the touch of the silicone šŸ”„ And because in theory itā€™s a good idea, to release pressure, I put it outside the sock , and I went down to the hospital to see Sonia yesterday, as she was not in on Friday. (The vascular wound specialist) She already knew I was not happy with the silicone, but looked at this invention and didnā€™t laughā€¦ checked the wound, cleaned it and then taped back onto the sock. ā€œIf it works like this, itā€™s okayā€. She seemed to have a good day, and had 2 assistants with her. She told me thereā€™s something else sheā€™s waiting for to come, that might help ā€¦ (oh my god, I thought, itā€™s a never ending story with the fixtures šŸ˜‚). I appreciate her dedication really. But I emphasized again I have no fear of anything more drastic. She said: ā€œ We still owe you some solutions ā€œ And me : ā€œNo, please, you donā€™t owe me anything, you have done so much for me ā€œšŸ™šŸ» Itā€™s true, I never blame them or anything like thatā€¦ (I was just thinking about it these days, I hope they donā€™t think Iā€™m not content because it doesnā€™t seem to work out well in the end how they did the surgery 4 years ago. No. We wanted to save this foot as much as possible. Lastly she said there might be already a specialists meeting in a few weeks time, where I would be invited for a joint evaluation šŸ™šŸ» that would be great. I know nothing will happen before summer, itā€™s too late and this process is rather slow. But I hope the decision will be taken. Neonatal sepsis, or newborn sepsis, is a serious condition characterized by a systemic infection in newborns less than 28 days old. Symptoms may include fever or hypothermia, lethargy, poor feeding, respiratory distress, jaundice, and abnormal heart rate or breathing patterns. Additionally, affected infants may exhibit signs of irritability, abdominal distension, or vomiting. Since neonatal sepsis can progress rapidly and lead to severe complications, prompt medical attention is crucial. Update on our Tiniest Sir, James and I: We are home now. Adjusting to life outside of the hospital, and no sleep. We want to thank every single one of you that raced to our aid, with prayers, thoughts, special messages, cards and donations. It has meant so much to us, and I'm so grateful for everyone single one of you. Even to the ones that didn't reach out to us directly but to our family. Also to the ones that asked about our oldest boys and Deej. This has affected our whole entire family to our core. We have so many amazing people in our lives and we do not take any of you for granted. We are taking this time to adjust and just love up on each other, so we can heal as a family. Today, James is a NICU graduate and is 9 weeks old today. If I was still pregnant we would be 38 weeks gestational. And thank you so much again. This Pediatric Sepsis Week, weā€™re recognizing the experiences of sepsis survivors like four-year-old Aurelia. Last summer, Aureliaā€™s mother, Laci, took her daughter to two separate pediatric urgent care centers for symptoms that included coughing, vomiting, and a fever. Doctors at both facilities reassured Laci that it was likely just a virus. She recalls, ā€œBy that point she was already showing signs of sepsis (lethargy, rash on her chest, high fever, etc.), but I am not a medical expert and trusted the advice being given to me. That night I just had a bad feeling, so I slept in the bed with my daughter.ā€ In the middle of the night, Laci rushed Aurelia to the ER when she noticed her daughterā€™s lips had turned blue and she was having trouble breathing. In the emergency room, staff immediately recognized Aureliaā€™s sepsis symptoms and worked to stabilize her so she could be transported to the nearest childrenā€™s hospital. Doctors told Laci that if she had not brought Aurelia in that evening, she likely would not have survived until morning. Laci shares, ā€œAll told, we spent 35 days in the PICU. Eventually, we found out that the cause of all of this had been a simple strep infection.ā€ Click the link in bio to read more of Aureliaā€™s story. (I lost the whole text on my previous post the other day.. so hereā€™s explanation) Last Friday I decided to go to the hospital as I didnā€™t get any news from the vascular. I hate complaining, pushing people, but the truth is if you donā€™t do it nothing happensā€¦ I entered the hospital and was wondering what the hell I should do, who to talk toā€¦ I tried to move my appointment from June to earlier but they said it was not possibleā€¦ sure. I was standing there like a dumb, when a door opened and Sonia the vascular assistant appeared and was SMILING at me! (I thought she would get pissed why Iā€™m there). ā€œZsu!! Do you read my mind??? I was just going to call you because at noon I receive something which might help, so I was to tell you to come on Monday! Itā€™s great you came in!! ā€œšŸ˜…šŸ™šŸ» I also did a doppler test to check circulation in foot, which was OK. Then Sonia tried on this special silicon pad, which helps to absorb pressure, used as a cushion in the shoe. We could hardly tuck in the foot into the shoe because we put two layers. It felt a bit better but I knew it was not going to be a final solution. But she said meanwhile the process (the doctors discussing my case) is ongoing itā€™s a bit of pain relief. I had to go back on Monday, and honestly on the weekend I didnā€™t walk that much so it was not hurting so bad. However this week I did more activity, exercise etc, and I started to have more and more calluses everyday. Yesterday I was outside the whole day, and it got really bad, it was burning. My skin is so sensitive, and all the tissues inside the foot that it canā€™t bear this thing overtime. My general pain (and phantom pain) worsened so I wonā€™t use it anymore.šŸ„² tomorrow I have to go back, I will explain itā€™s not working unfortunately. I must make them aware, I need a final solution no more experiments. Itā€™s hard for me to advocate for myself, itā€™s so tiringā€¦ So please wish me luck they understand my suffering and I donā€™t have to keep complaining. Otherwise Iā€™m so fine and happy! I just want to solve this once and for all šŸ™šŸ»šŸ¤āœØšŸŒøšŸŒŗ

Identifying signs of urosepsis is crucial, as it can be life-threatening. Symptoms may include low blood pressure, rapid breathing, and breathing difficulties. On the other hand, paying attention to urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms is essential for early treatment. UTI signs encompass painful urination, frequent urination, and the presence of blood in the urine. Timely recognition and medical intervention are vital for both conditions to prevent complications. Did you know that ANY infection can trigger life-threatening sepsis in babies and children, just as it can in adults? Whether the result of a common virus like the flu, or a bacterial infection like group B strep, sepsis is the leading cause of death in young children and babies worldwide. The list above highlights some common causes of sepsis in babies, but itā€™s important to monitor your child for sepsis symptoms if you think that any type of infection may be present. Remember, if you suspect your child has sepsis, seek emergency care immediately and say, ā€œI suspect sepsis.ā€ Take the time to learn the signs this Pediatric Sepsis Week. Today is St George (the dragon and St. George) , here in Catalunya is an important festivity. The tradition is to give a single rose to the girls, and a book to the boys. šŸŒ¹ Ā  Today is also World Book Day. šŸ“ššŸ“š You know I love reading, so I thought I would tell you about one of my favorite books: Xiaolan Zhao - Traditional Chinese Medicine for Women (Reflections of the Moon on Water). Ā  One day in the library in the alternative medicine section I found this book and I fell in love with it. I think all women should read it, ( and also men, to understand women! :), and teach it to our daughters, itā€™s so enlightening and beautiful. Xiaolan Zhao is from China and was a general surgeon,Ā  she had also studied traditional Chinese medicine. In the 90Ā“s she moved to Canada where she started to treat women based on TCM once she experienced how Western culture makes women sick, struggling with fatigue, depression, menstrual difficulties, infertility, chronic pain and cancer. Quotes from the Foreword written by Carolyn DeMarco, MD: ā€œIt is a compelling look at the stages of a womanā€™s life and includes a wealth of practical suggestions for living them in harmony with natureā€™s rhythms to maintain health and prevent disease. In Western medicine we have medicalized the natural and healthy stages of a womanā€™s life. We over-prescribe birth control pills, hormonal medications, tranquilizers, antidepressants, and many other medications, much to the detriment of womenā€™s health. In contrast, in Chinese medicine, the stages of a womanā€™s life are honoured and celebrated. Menstruation is referred to as Heavenly Water, pregnancy is called Ripening the Fruit, postpartum is known as Golden Month, and menopause is called Second Spring.ā€ ā€œThe ancient traditions of Chinese medicine are needed more than ever in our society where women are increasingly pressured to be superwomen and are fatigued, stressed and sleep-deprived beyond endurance, and breast cancer and heart disease, autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks its own tissues, are all on the increase.ā€ ā€œThis book will enable you to care for and thoroughly enjoy the body that youĀ“re in.ā€ šŸ‘‡šŸ¼šŸ‘‡šŸ¼šŸ‘‡šŸ¼more

Another successful Sepsis 911 presentation this morning at Homewood in Williamsport, MD. Attendees were raptly engaged and focused on the topic at hand - sepsis, our stories, and the medical facts, statistics, and what we can do to reduce the number of deaths each year (1.7 million in the U.S. are affected by sepsis each year, resulting in 350,000 deaths). There are many of us, survivors, heartbroken families who lost a loved one, like losing our amazing 5 year-old Lochlin to flu and sepsis, and caretakers of those who've survived sepsis and suffered catastrophic injuries and amputations. We are much bigger than the numbers, we are all human beings with names, faces, and families, forever connected by this dreadful, lethal syndrome. https://www.instagram.com/loveforlochlin/ As usual, our presentation was interactive and lively. We received lots of questions from attendees and talked with them afterwards. We're being asked to extend beyond our home state and head into neighboring Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, to spread the word. When sepsis quits, then we'll quit. But we all know that sepsis isn't giving up, so we're not giving up either. I'm so lucky to have met Brooke and work with her on these presentations. The @loveforlochlin foundation, which Brooke founded, provides vital help to our communities. Brooke is a total sweetheart, a kind, caring and patient nurse, and she's incredibly strong and relentless about protecting people from sepsis. I'm honored to know her and to work with her.ā¤ļø Next Thursday, April 18, we'll be at the Lunch and Learn at 11:30 am at the @natellifamily_ymca and the week after that we were invited to speak online on Steve Gurney's Positive Aging Community platform on Wednesday April 24, at 11:30 am EST. Also, on Thursday, April 18 at 2 pm EST, I was invited to speak online to offer tips for sepsis advocacy through storytelling on the @sepsisalliance platform. Go to www.sepsis.org to register for this interesting and informative talk, if you are looking for ways to share your sepsis story and advocate for awareness.
