Hiya, I’m Caroline, 37 , from Manchester. I have a little boy Noah , who I delivered via C section in April 2021. During my delivery, I suffered a haemorrhage and subsequently wasn’t able to breastfeed. After repeatedly speaking with different lactation consultants and going backwards and forwards to my GP for over 6 months a nurse practitioner suggested ‘Sheehan’s Syndrome’ during a routine appointment with my child! I visited my GP and made the suggestion and they had never even heard of it! But as my period hadn’t come back and no milk supply they referred me to an Endocrinologist. Blood results showed low oestrogen, and low prolactin. After repeated MRI’s and bloods taken every couple of weeks, I was diagnosed with Sheehan’s early this year. I was actually told it was many other things before this, such as ‘Postpartum Depression’ or a ‘Stroke’ or that my body just needed ‘time’. I’m now on HRT and trying to move forward. The diagnosis was really hard to accept and not being able to breastfeed my child devastated me . I honestly tortured myself for the longest time believing I’d failed my child. I received criticism in the beginning of my parenting journey, which stuck with me and had a profound impact on my mental health. I had comments such as ‘Noah won’t have a good immune system now’ ‘you’re just too lazy to breastfeed’ ‘ Your child stinks because you formula feed him’ ‘you’ll never have a bond like a breastfed kid has’ I would blame myself if he became ill or has a flare up of eczema. I prayed daily to wake up and this be just a dream and by some miracle my body would go back to ‘normal. I’m trying everyday to accept this new me and enjoy the time my son whilst he is so little, as a lot of my energy and time was so consumed with questions and what ifs during the first few months. I’m so happy to have found this group because it’s honestly been, for such a long time, a lonely and isolating journey. Ansiedade a mil, em muitos momentos, achei que estava louca por estar fazendo isso. Achei até, que talvez, o certo não seria seguir meus sonhos, a ansiedade me dizia que estava sendo egoísta por estar fazendo isso. E se for mesmo ? E daí ? Se eu não for agora vou quando ? Quando paro pra pensar em toda a minha trajetória até agora, não teria conseguido absolutamente nada se não fosse pela terapia e por estar finalmente tomando os medicamentos corretos. Saúde mental mostrou a força e importância durante esse período. Foram várias sessões para me convencer de que deveria me inscrever no ENEM, pois achava que não era boa o suficiente e que não adiantava fazer pois não iria passar, o durante as duas fases enfrentei diversos obstáculos, estudar trabalhando 6x1, ansiedade, problemas de percurso. Durante a mudança então, se eu não estivesse tão estruturada emocionalmente não teria chegado aqui. Estou na casa dos sonhos, na cidade e bairro dos sonhos, fazendo o curso dos sonhos de infância. Obrigada a absolutamente todos os meus amigos e familiares que me apoiaram grandemente durante essa jornada, serei eternamente grata. Mas obrigada também para os meus psiquiatras da Santa Casa e principalmente para a @psi_patriciamarqui que me ajudou a crescer e me fortalecer tanto em 2 anos. Eu me levantei. Eu venci. My journey with Sheehan's Syndrome began after the birth of my second son on 24 May 2023. The pregnancy was healthy and I entered into labor at 39 weeks spontaneously. Due to complications with the baby (very low cardiac beats during contractions) we opted for an emergency C-section after 8 hours of labor. The C-section went as expected, no significant loss of blood, no hypotension… however 2 days after I started having some strong headaches, which the doctors said were a complication of the epidural. The headache went on for a few days (5/6) and then eventually went away. I could not breastfeed, the milk would just not appear. I breastfed my oldest son so I was very aware that I was not having any milk and started giving formula immediately. 10 days after the birth I scheduled an appointment with an Lactation Consultant who advised me to stimulate with the pump and told me to take motilium (there are studies stating that this may increase milk supply). She didn’t have an answer to what was happening. She said that the only situation where a woman cannot breastfeed is when there is a significant loss of blood during birth or hypotension (she didn’t mention Sheehan’s Syndrome directly unfortunately, as it would have saved me some time indeed). My quest for answers has been 11 years long and I’m still searching. So far I have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression and perimenopause. I had never heard of Sheehan’s Syndrome until last year, and I’m currently 8 months into a 12 month wait to see an endocrinologist in the hope that I can finally get the help I need. Since having my youngest child in 2013, things haven’t been quite right. The labour and birth were weirdly enjoyable, I was relaxed and happy and having done it before 3 years previously I knew what to expect. However, this one was a lot quicker and within minutes of arriving at the midwife led unit he was in my arms! I didn’t even have time to get on the bed, I was still standing and after planning a water birth, they’d only managed to fill about an inch of water in the tub. After the initial euphoria and phone calls to family, it became obvious that there were concerns that I hadn’t passed my placenta. The more I thought about this, the more I realised that presenting helpful ideas on “how to rediscover yourself” could become yet another pressure on the to-do list. Filed next to: lose weight, get fit, get some sleep. Every mum is short on time, but the number of tasks hanging over a mum with a maternal pituitary condition is utterly overwhelming. On top of all those parenting, home and work tasks comes a full time job of managing a dynamic and often unpredictable health condition. So I have a dilemma. Because of my adrenal insufficiency obviously my endocrinologist gave me some emergency shots in case I get sick or injured and need a boost. Trouble is, I completely forgot to ask the pharmacist how the hell to do these shots. The top of the bottle has liquid, the bottom has powder. I don't see any way to make them combine. Does anyone out there with Addison's or hypopituitarism know how this works or a video that shows how to do this? What is the most challenging aspect of hypopituitarism for our family? Growth hormone injections. Not only is it hard to get my son to sit still for them, there are also frequently pen shortages. Many families have to fight with insurance to even get growth hormone covered. Overall, it can be quite frustrating! We have been using Humatrope for a few months since Norditropin has been out of stock for nearly 18 months. We have also used Genotropin in the past. It’s been a bit of a learning curve for setting up the Humatrope pen. In my opinion, Norditropin is by far the easiest to administer so I hope we can go back to that one eventually. At the end of the day, the struggles are worth it to see my son growing happy and healthy. When you are newly diagnosed it can seem so incredibly daunting. There are so many questions. One of the questions I had, was how can I store my medication out of reach of my daughter. Jenn said she uses a storage case, similar to those used when children go to boarding school. It works brilliantly. It's large enough to store all the medication I need and I know it's safely locked and no little people can access it! Results I got the call from London yesterday regarding Els recent tests. All seemed OK except her liver function was high (121 instead of normal range 55) so more investigations will be done by other teams to check her meds arent causing toxicity. One more test needs completing also from endocrine side of things which is a short synacthen test for cortisol. I have an appointment with immunology today to speak about Els recent back to back illnesses. Aside from all this, Els has brightened right up over the weekend! She's had a lovely Easter and her appetite has returned and she cannot get enough of her beloved banana and coconut pouches again! The mood is much lighter and I firmly believe that when Els is OK, everything else feels much more ok. Even when there's tons to juggle, along as she's feeling better, it all becomes a lot easier to manage. As someone who is #visuallyimpaired i am often told I am unfortunate for being disabled. I’ve lived like this my entire life.if there was one thing I’d want people to know about chronic illness and disability it would be this…. What inconveniences me more are my chronic illnesses which caused the sight impairment. I’m probably splitting hairs there though. However, Disability is not a dirty word. It describes someone who lives differently because of a physical or mental IMPAIRMENT. We don’t ask for sympathy, we just want understanding and empathy. Not all disabilities are visible. Most chronic illnesses and disabilities have INVISIBLE SYMPTOMS! We don’t need to tell you our whole MEDICAL history to prove our disability. People with chronic illness/ disabilities learn to put on a BRAVE FACE and function in extreme fatigue/pain. You never know what battle someone is fighting so always be KIND. Just because we don’t always look sick doesn’t mean we are FAKING our illnesses/disability. Every day looks different. One day we could be hiking up a 650ft hill, the next we are bed ridden with chronic fatigue. Just because we aren’t acting unwell doesn’t mean we are cured. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and their opinions and are on their own journey however. People learn in their own time. But please don’t shame us for our bodies or the fact we can do something one day and not the other. I can’t begin to tell you how terrible of a feeling this is… I feel like the last few weeks have been a blur. The doctors appointments, all the tests, new doctors, new diagnoses. It’s just been SO MUCH. I’ve always mostly had problems with my bones, & I know I keep saying this but it’s really new territory for me and I’m doing my best to navigate it and learn as much as I can in order to be able to help myself emotionally and physically. & this is just one Yesterday I met with my new endocrinologist. I haven’t seen endo in many years. The doctor was very nice & thorough and explained to me what Empty Sella Syndrome or “hypopituitarism” is (my newest diagnosis) and how I most likely developed it. ESS is rare but to have symptoms is even more rare and I have many symptoms. He said I most likely had a brain tumor, and as that brain tumor grew, it ended up flattening my pituitary gland. And that the brain tumor must have gone away on its own but it still left behind tumor matter and that’s what they’re seeing on my brain MRI quite literally squishing my pituitary gland. Most likely I had the brain tumor for a really long time and I just wasn’t aware of it; we will never really know. But something happened when this all started 2 years ago. How crazy and miraculous and magical is it that my body somehow got rid of this brain tumor on its own?!? BUT, for the rest of my life I will have to take medication to replace what this syndrome has taken from my body. That’s the sucky part but my doctor said thankfully there are meds to replace what my body now can’t produce on its own. The pituitary gland is a really important part of the human body, for such a little tiny thing. I’m not going to lie, it’s been hard for me to grasp all of this. I feel like I’m “less” of a woman… even though I know deep down being a woman has nothing to do with any of this. I am just as much of a woman now as I was before this happened to me. But I will allow myself to feel my emotions.
