One of the hardest & best life lessons I learned this past year was to let connections fall away (friends, lovers, work). I prided myself on being a "fighter" and mistakenly brought this energy into so many connections. As a kid, I was in a constant state of longing; needing more love, affection, attention, and early on, got the message I was too much or not enough. So I learned to fight, to contort, conform, to please, in order to get my needs met; this was out of survival. Naturally, this followed me into adulthood. I mistook this trauma response for resilience, and my people pleasing as loyalty and devotion. No one prepared me for the overwhelming grief or the freedom and tremendous joy that comes with doing this work. It has been excruciating to unlearn, and I am beyond grateful. So now, when things fall apart, I let them fall. The tiniest spider just appeared on my arm out of nowhere. I swiped it away, and she jumped back on me. Swiped it away again, and she appeared a 3rd time on my leg. You can see it next to my freckle--I included a pic of my freckle for scale--so tiny against my jeans. Something AMAZING happened this evening that's never happened to me before. Someone I love, once again, was inconsiderate of my feelings, even though I had clearly stated in the past how a specific behavior hurts me, and what could help our communication (I still don't understand how people act like this towards people they supposedly care about). Immediately, I was triggered: hurt, my gut felt like it was stabbed, my heart ached, pressure in my chest changed my breathing, heat flushed my face, and I cried--flight/fight/freeze survival mode activated. Instantly, my brain said, "he doesn't care enough about your feelings to really change" and once again, made it ALL about me (nuthin' new). I started to use all my self-soothing/coping skills (still nuthin' new), but this time I was able to remember to practice compassionate curiosity about my trigger, and the old (very young) wound it reactivated. I took a deep breath, placed my hand over my heart, and said to myself out loud, "This isn't about you. You are lovable. You are deserving. You matter." I could feel a lump in my throat, like I couldn't let those words in, even though it's exactly what I needed to hear & feel. So, I repeated it, softly, lovingly, until I could say it clearly & let it sink in. I took another deep breath & felt okay, grounded. A few seconds later, I shouted, "Holy shit! It worked!" I called my spirit back with the same love I would a child ❤️. I gotta say, it was probably one of the best feelings I've ever experienced--something I wasn't sure I'd be ever able to achieve. Something finally clicked! Honestly, I wish this for everyone on the planet. Learning to not take people's behavior personally or attach meaning to it that devalues us; to be curious & approach our wounds with love; and give ourselves the comforting messages we need when those wounds resurface. My goal is to keep practicing. Saturday is the Autumnal Equinox, a day with equal parts light and dark. In many spiritual practices, this is an important time of looking inward as we transition and change. I consider it a good day if I learned something new AND cool--today did not disappoint. In 2003, studies at the HeartMath Institute by Dr. Rollin McCraty showed that the heart produces a magnetic field that’s about 5,000 times more powerful than the brain. Different levels of magnetic energy being emitted indicated that your heart and your mind are distinct parts of you. "Call your spirit back...as if it were a beloved child." Child development theory calls it an "unhealthy attachment." Trauma-informed psychology calls it a "trauma bond." In spirituality, it's referred to as a "karmic bond." All 3 describe the same thing: an attachment we form out of survival mode, rooted in a part of us (usually a younger, wounded part) that leads us to accept mistreatment & abuse, usually from another wounded person. The idea is we're supposed to "learn" what love and safety are by experiencing what it is not. If the "lesson" isn't learned, we get stuck. I've studied these 3 approaches/theories, and I'm struck by how they all say that centering ourselves and going within is how we break free; to ground, and root ourselves in ourselves, over and over again. We are enough, and because we are no longer vulnerable children/adolescents/teens, we don't actually need anyone to "survive" (despite what our pain, fear, and anxiety tell us). Every time we choose ourselves over someone who hurt us, we level up, and the healing deepens. And when we find another we desire, admire, and who inspires us to heal/keep healing and growing, that connection heals both people exponentially. This poem now makes SO much more sense than when I first read it almost 1 year ago.
