🤍 231113 🤍 617. African corn lily (Ixia sp.). Someone please help me ID this, it's driving me insane. 😣 I cannot for the life of me work out which species or cultivar this is. I. polystachya is the closest in colouring, but the ones I have don't look like any of the images I've seen. The petals are pure white with a small lime green centre, and the anthers are a distinct mid-blue rimmed with indigo. Purple pistil. I've found ONE picture that looks like mine, and it was someone's upload to PictureThis (which I also use, btw) and incorrectly ID'd. These were grown from bulbs growing on the roadside last December. Ixia is not native to this area, or even this country, and we (my boss, coworker, and I) haven't seen them growing anywhere else nearby. We didn't spot them growing in that spot for any of the preceding years, but the increased rainfall up to last year might have finally triggered its growth. Our best guess is that someone...threw them out a car window? Maybe even as recently as the year we found them? 🤨 It's not a natural stopping point for road traffic; roads in that area are 100kph, and where we found the bulbs was right at a deserted corner of a farm property. It isn't close to ANYTHING. And they haven't shown up this year. There were dozens originally; we're not sure if someone else dug them all up, or if they feel prey to the council's regular roadside weed spraying. It's worth noting that on that same corner, but on the other side of the road, we also (at a different time of year) found a bunch of beautifully-scented roses growing wild. Again, with no others anywhere nearby. When learning to identify poison ivy, I’ve mostly been educated on the foliage and the young vine; however, I don’t hear people often discussing the nature vine that primarily grows on the sides of trees…this is a vine covered dead tree that I was working on a little over a week ago. No foliage in sight, but a MASSIVE, hairy vine that was as thick as my arm.
