PB Sox. Nestled in the heart of Trek Nawa in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. My section was tasked with maintaining the integrity and security of the patrol base while Golf Company conducted a clearing operation in the area as it was a hotbed for Taliban activity. We made movement to the patrol base on foot under cover of darkness, not an easy task considering the lack of depth perception provided by the PVS-14s and unfamiliar terrain. Marines are known for unparalleled devotion to duty and mission accomplishment so despite the difficulties we pressed forward. This operation marked the first time I had ever been shot at. It’s an experience I’ll never forget, the snap of the round passing over head is not a sound easily forgotten. Yet despite the objectively terrifying conditions we never faltered as we knew the Marine on our right and our left would fight to the death to bring the others home, and we did just that. In the fire of combat bonds are forged that are not easily broken. 13 years later I stand shoulder to shoulder with my brothers and sisters in arms, the only difference is now we are facing down the specter of suicide haunting the veteran community. Together we will prevail, take the fight to veteran suicide for the cost of a bag of coffee or tea. That was tougher than it looks. 3:47 and 3:52 split times on the rower. Total time was 31:35. The hardest part is a tie between the heavy Russian kbs (70 pounds) and the burpees. The wallballs felt easy, probably could’ve done 30 pounds instead of 20. I kept each set of wallballs and kbs unbroken. I stepped back and forward on the burpees. On April 29, 2007, 1st Lt. Travis Manion, his fellow Marines and Iraqi Army counterparts were ambushed while searching a suspected insurgent house in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. Leading the counterattack against the enemy forces, Travis was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper while aiding and drawing fire away from his wounded teammates. Travis Manion made the ultimate sacrifice that day. Meet Solair! 🐴🇺🇸 He is a 12 year old American Mustang that came out of the BLM herds and was placed on a ranch in Utah. He received some training, but was not ridden and was still in need of a home. He is the newest member of the @poniesnorthinc team and will carry US Veterans on the 1500-mile trek from the Mexican Border to the Canadian Border, raising awareness for the veteran suicide crisis along with the plight of the mustangs. We were able to interact with him a little in the round pen and Lara led him back to his stall to put him away for the night. I fear we have forgotten the impact of war on populations, with our inertia to call out the atrocities in Gaza and our simpering relationship with USA leading us into battle under the guise of freedom. The toll of war in those who survive is staggering. If this is truly a day of remembrance for our fallen soldiers, then it must also sharply bring into focus the suicide rate of our serving veterans who are 42% more likely to die by suicide than the broader male Australian population (Nov 2023). The trajectory of intergenerational trauma affects the fabric of attachment and national identity. If I ever say I’m not doing this again…just slap me and tell me I’m lying. I’m happy to share with you all that I’ll be embarking on another trek across the state of Michigan this summer. My heart continues to be drawn to advocate for veteran causes, and as long as I have the means to do so, I’m going to continue to campaign in this way. I’ll be leaving from the Michigan/Indiana border on Monday, July 29th, and walking a little less than 400 miles to Mackinaw City. Along the way, I’ll be highlighting the stories of different veterans, as well as sharing veteran organizations and resources that we have here in the Great Lakes State for our brothers and sisters who have served. I believe it’s imperative that we continue to support those who have served us, and let them know that they will never have to fight their battles alone. The symbolism behind this video is about more than just pushups - the 22 Pushup Challenge started as a way to spread awareness that an average of 22 combat veterans take their own lives each day*. *The stat is broken down as a daily average to visualize what the annual rate looks like (not to it feels like a lot of the be taken literally as a daily number), 22 was originally cited from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) 2013 report covering suicides from 1999 to 2010. Per the VA’s National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report (published Sep 2022): in 2020, there were an average of 16.8/ day (6,146 veteran suicides total). In this report, veterans are defined as people activated for Federal military service and not currently serving at the time of death. Beyond veterans - Active Component Service members - the Department of Defense (DoD)’s Annual Report on Suicide in the Military has the current rate at 24 a day as of 2021. Active Component rates over the years (via DoD): 21.5 (2016), 22.2 (2017), 24.9 (2018), 26.3 (2019), 28.7 (2020), 24.3 (2021). While the original VA report is specific to combat veterans and the DoD report reflects the active component - PTSD and depression can impact anyone, veteran or civilian. Unfortunately, there’s no way to know the exact number of suicides, but it’s important to get prevention resources out.
