Day 28 of 30: 2021 These are screen shots of 'Hollington Drive', a programme made by Drive Through Productions and screened on ITV in the UK. It was the first time that any of my work had been featured on television and was very exciting! I also enjoyed the challenge of carving work to exacting briefs and tight deadlines. There was no time to make sketches, maquettes or clay models of any pieces before carving - you just had to get on with it. Other examples of my work have since appeared in a few more productions, such as 'Becoming Elizabeth', 'Truelove' and will be in the upcoming adaptation of the Jilly Cooper novel 'Rivals'. I'm at the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts in Davis, California. Given that I'm embarking on making ceramic bumblebees this year, I went looking for some bees around here. I captured this photo of a male Valley Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa sonorina, today in Davis, California, USA. This is the biggest bee species in California. Lucky me. Day 17 of 30: 2010 'Gramophone weevil' was partly inspired by the cool VW record player in the video for Money Mark's song 'Hand in your head'. I was also imagining a world where genetic engineering and nanotechnology allows creatures to be created for a single purpose. The weevil just walks around vinyl records (which would probably be very valuable objects by then), using the stylus on its long mouth to play them. It has no need for mouthparts to feed. The 'vinyl' measures 12" (30cm) across and is actually charcoal dust in resin. Day 13 of 30: 2006 Quite a few important things happened in this year. I relocated to Bristol, which is still my base, got my first studio and became involved in the Forest of Avon Wood Products cooperative who were to be a very important part of the following years. One of the first carvings made after graduating from the design course, this is still a favourite. I call it 'Scorpion fly' and it includes details inspired by real scorpion flies, along with other insects and invertebrates. Each element was carved using a lock knife or a Dremel rotary tool and then joined together. The fly is 5cm (2") long. This is part of the 'Metainsecta' series, which was inspired by the US government's HI-MEMS project. The researchers sought to incorporate control mechanisms into insects for military purposes. I don't know if it is still running. It seemed obvious that, rather than implants being put into each insect, nanofactories would be able to replicate with insect generations. They could also transfer between insects and possibly 'mutate' over time themselves. Well, I think we will leave it here at the end of 2023...slow going and not much has changed on this. One of my highlights this year was finalising the public art installation ‘Like a moth to a flame’ together with artist @aiajudes. We installed a huge installation of sculpted and laser etched insects made by me with the help of @storverkstan and nectar drops and flowers made in glass by Aia with the help of @sthlm_glas. The project took us 3 years and in June finally our pieces were installed in a 6 meter high portal in Ursvik, Sweden. Beautiful and complex circuit board patterns are repeated on her wings as delicate wing veins. Each one of my Computer Bugs is a one off, original artwork...there are no two alike. My newest Swallowtail Butterfly. It’s not easy to capture the ‘fuzziness’ of some butterflies when you’re creating them from hard metals and circuit boards but I think I’ve achieved it visually with this one. The minute and very fine, zig zagging patterns on her circuit board body are extended onto her wings, radiating out from her body and gradually fading, giving the impression of a ‘fuzziness’.
