NEW!!! … & NOW AVAILABLE IN SANTA FE! “Mejiro Birds in Plum Blossoms” was originally inspired during my time living in Japan. It carries me back to a very particular spring afternoon when I first crossed paths with two diminutive mejiro birds frolicking amidst the bows of an aged plum tree in full bloom. There was magic in the encounter, and so I sought to capture something of my experience - peering into the vividness & vitality inside that dappled canopy of petals. I first cast this piece in resin & was honored to have it accepted by jury into the National Sculpture Society’s “Visions of Spring” exhibition in Manhattan, NYC. (March-May, 2020). Further, I was thrilled when the Society then selected "Mejiro Birds in Plum Blossoms” to be the primary sculptural image for the promotion of the show. All of that being said, I have long wanted to see this sculpture come to fruition in bronze - & I am truly happy with how the hand coloring over silver nitrate enhances the details of the casting. And so in celebration of Spring … I present to you, "Mejiro Birds in Plum Blossoms,” as a finished bronze. The buds are on the branches and the songbirds have returned to wake me each morning. What wonderful signs of promise, renewal, hope and growth for the year to come! With thoughts of Japan fresh in my head, I'm starting a small series of watercolour and ink paintings. Hopefully, these will be followed by some collagraph prints and etchings. This first one is of my son, striding into the beautiful orange-red tori gates at the magnificent Fushimi Inari. With 10,000 tori gates, it was almost hypnotic walking through them to the mountain top. "Flowers are only flowers because they fall" - 🥀 Lady Mariko, @shogunseries Is anyone else completely obsessed with Sogun? I can't wait for the final today. I spent 1000 days on @duolingo learning Japanese before going to Japan in October for my honeymoon (it was a lockdown streak I couldn't bare to give up). To say the country left a lasting impact is an understatement and so I'm loving the sights, scenes and rituals on show in Shogun on Disney+. The tea ceremony particularly is something truly magical and worth experiencing for yourself and features a couple of times in the show🍵 The line from Mariko has stayed with me and when I had an accident with my beloved orchid yesterday, it made me think of her quote. The lacquer beans are a shape that Elsa returned to frequently while designing: the organic shape fits the hand and was transformed into lacquered clutch purses using magnolia wood. Narysowałam bóstwo Inari(postać ta zmienia płeć w zależności od tematu, wierzeń i wieku)z jej wysłannikami czyli dobrymi lisami Zenko. Najczęściej w wierzeniach Inari jest związane z rolnictwem w tym oczywiście z ryżem. Jestem ogólnie z siebie dumna, że mimo myślenia i rysowania od 3 tygodni udało się skończyć rysunek. I drew the deity Inari(the character changes gender depending on the theme, beliefs and ages)with her envoys that is the good Zenko foxes. The bangles are made from Japanese hardwood called ‘katsura’ originally carved by Mr. Murakami, a master woodcarver from Kyoto. The wood must be dense, light and resistant to wrapping, in fact the bangles are given a unique wrapping of linen over the wood base for major durability.The carved bangles are then lacquered with a traditional Japanese craft called ‘Urushi’ an exact 70-step process using natural tree sap over carved Japanese hardwood. The natural life along these rivers was surprising & beautiful. The water was quite clear. Schools of fish leapt & shoaled in the slow currents - gathering at the river's edges amid the submerged roots of the river grass. From base to seed head, these tall grasses were epicenters of life - their upper reaches, vibrant & fertile, fairly bustled with the activity of tiny birds. Each & every day the twitterings & songs of these birds marshaled my walks. Their antics enchanted me. DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT ✨️ TATIE LOU Over the next few weeks I am going to share with you some of my very favourite fabric designers in a little 'Designer Spotlight' series. I have worked with Louise, the talented designer behind Tatie Lou for several years now and her designs never fail to steal the show. Soltar Ink (1st image) has become the most popular fabric choice for our vintage cinema seats and I can totally see why. The bold design with a hint of art deco suits the chairs so well. We also recently collaborated with Tatie Lou to create a pair of cinema seats in her Les Plumes velvet (image2), which she resizes and prints in mirror image, especially to fit the chairs. Lunedì giornata di spedizioni, programmazione e riordino del lab. Oggi tra l’altro mi è venuta voglia di iniziare un progetto che ho in mente da tantissimo tempo e se riesco nei prossimi giorni ti racconto qualcosina in più. Le idee sono sempre tante e a volte manca proprio il tempo necessario per svilupparle. Altre idee non sono purtroppo fattibili per quanto riguarda i costi e sono costretta a lasciarle da parte finché non riesco a trovare un compromesso per riuscire nel mio intento. Molte infatti resteranno chiuse in quell’ultimo cassetto per sempre. Nel frattempo penso anche a prepararmi ai prossimi eventi, perché ad aprile si ricomincia e sarà un mese denso di appuntamenti. This week’s @drawingskool homework assignment is “BLOSSOM!” As it happens I’ve got plans for a blossom print but it’s not yet fully thought through so I’ve come up something else for this week’s homework. I’ve taken inspiration from Japanese paintings and I wanted to incorporate a bird of some sort. After some googling I came across the Daurian Redstart (a winter visitor to Japan) which I thought would work really nicely with the pink blossoms I had planned. When the book you’re reading 📖 inspires you to create a piece of floral design to match! This is my first jasmine Kokedama, inspired by Japanese aesthetics and the arrival of spring 🌸🇯🇵! Kokedama literally translates as “moss ball”, a ball of soil covered in live moss (from my garden!), which encapsulates a living plant. I especially love their versatility, as they look equally as beautiful inside the home or outside in the garden!
