Taking ten Swiss landscape architecture studios as examples, the author (Rahel Hartmann Schweizer) illustrates how they drew inspiration from miniaturized gardens (bonsai), borrowed scenery (shakkei), succumbed to the allure of the imperfect (wabi-sabi), and captured the spirit of Zen Buddhism. Second Story Time in May is taking us to Kyoto and to the Kyoto Gosho (the Kyoto Imperial Palace). I visited at a time where still almost no tourists were allowed into Japan and it was such a relaxed visit! I came for a special garden opening in Daitoku-ji (where taking pictures wasn't allowed) but also took the chance to check off the Kyoto Gosho from my bucket list! It covers such a huge area! But there were also lovely little gardens on the grounds! This nice hill made out of rocks is located right next to the pond area. It is quite rare to see metal lanterns in gardens. The Water Garden Jihei Ogawa is one of Japan's greatest gardeners and Yasuyuki Namikawa is a legendary cloisonne ware artist. This garden is the ultimate masterpiece of Japanese beauty created by two genius artists. Namikawa began construction of his new residence and landscaping of the gardens after winning a gold medal at the Paris Exposition of 1889. Namikawa asked Ogawa, who lived next door, to create a garden.The garden was the work of Ogawa in his early thirties and brought him recognition. It's a garden belonging to famous Senso-ji temple in Asakusa. When I visited, it was open to the public every spring (if visiting the adjacent museum).
