The Matka Canyon is certainly worth a visit when in Skopje. Its nature is beautiful and there is a nice trail along the water. So, last year I went on an epic two-month solo interrail adventure across Europe 🚅. It was an incredible journey of self-discovery and exploration. Instead of traditional accommodations, I decided to embrace the hostel life for the first time. Not only did it help me save money 💵, but it also allowed me to connect with fascinating people from all over the world. Most hostels I stayed in were equipped with very good facilities, including more than enough clean toilets and showers, fully-equipped kitchens, lockers, and enough storage space around the beds 🚿🧻🔪🔐. As a nature enthusiast, I rather go into the wilderness than crowded cities. Luckily, interrail made it easy to immerse myself in breathtaking natural wonders 🌅🌲. My journey started in Switzerland🇨🇭, where I hopped aboard the Glacier Express and Bernina Express🚂. I now get why they are so famous; the views really were breathtaking🏔️. From there, I went to the majestic Austrian Alps, explored the scenic Rhine region in Germany, and discovered the hidden gems of Liege in Belgium. And then, it was time for Scandinavia—a true paradise for nature lovers. The interrail system transported me to stunning landscapes and wilderness. As September rolled in, I headed to Italy to escape the cooling temperatures across the rest of Europe🥶. 3 days in Split 🏛🌊🦐⛵️ My visit to Split punctuated my first time in Croatia, breaking up my stops in Zagreb and Hvar. A place I used as a base, it quickly became a sweet little trip in itself. Here's my highlights from Split: 🏛Things to do: A visit to Split wouldn't have felt complete without delving into the history of Dicoletian's Palace. We booked onto a walking tour to learn more about the ancient Roman palace - the historic core of the town gets very busy during the days when the ferries stop over, so it was great to be guided through. For some pictures and a more relaxing wander through the narrow streets, it's worth exploring first thing in the morning. We felt the real charm of Split was found outside of the historic walls though - a few streets away from the Palace we walked through the pine forest to Marjan Hill for some excellent views of the port. Split was a great base to visit other places too - we booked onto a one day small group tour to Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and left Split by catamaran for 4 days in Hvar. The Diocletiano Artisan & Gift shop was a lovely store to visit for prints and other gifts made by Croatian artists. If you're partial to a quirky exhibit, you could visit Froggy Land - this is a museum featuring over 500 taxidermy frogs from a 100+ year old collection arranged in various every day scenes. There's no photos allowed there, so you'd have to see for yourself. 🍴Things to eat and drink: For food we enjoyed Kantun Paulina for some Cevapi with casual outdoor seating, Konoba Varos for tasty seafood pasta and risotto, @fantazijakitchenandwine for food with a twist, @gelateriaemiliana2019 for the best gelato (personal fav was fior di latte with blueberry) and Cafe Teak for a relaxing cafe bar stop for coffee all the way through to drinks in the evening. 4 days in Zagreb 🚊🖼🥣 Lively streets, funky museums and breakfast bowls that I'll seriously consider returning for. Zagreb was such a fun city to visit. Here's some highlights to save for your next visit to the Croatian capital: 🎨Things to do: You'll find good museums and galleries in every city, but perhaps not as unique as the one's in Zagreb. The Museum of Broken Relationships @brokenships started as a travelling museum, but has found its home in Zagreb, and exhibits personal objects from former relationships. The collection is pretty big but it's a real pleasure to slowly examine each artefact alongside its brief synopsis, written by the owner. I loved that it didn't just focus on failed romantic relationships, but also on long lost pen pals, the end of friendships, or one person's goodbye to pizza in light of allergies. Some items are naturally a bit sad, but others mark a positive new beginning, make you smile, laugh or even cringe a bit. Another interesting one for a quick visit is the @zagreb80museum which prides itself on being a fully interactive reconstruction of everyday life in former Yugoslavia - according to my boyfriend, the pictures look just like his grandma's house in Serbia. For something different, we wandered outside the centre to the Mirogoj cemetery. It's a vast and peaceful space with sloping pathways, arcades and domes (in part still undergoing reconstruction following the 2020 earthquake) and is multi-faith (and secular). 🥣Things to eat and drink: Breakfast was the standout in Zagreb - they really have mastered the art of a breakfast bowl. Highlights were @boogielab_zagreb and @balance_brunch for granola bowls and coffee. For other meals, we absolutely devoured the burgers at @burgeraj.zagreb and thought @kaistreetfoodbar was cool. 2 days in Brussels 🎨🇧🇪🍺🚲 The second leg of my trip was a 2 day stop in Brussels. It'd be rude to do an interrail trip without stopping at the de facto capital of the EU. Less than two hours by the Eurostar from London, it's technically quicker for me to reach Brussels than my family up in Manchester! Sharing below some recommendations to save for your future trip to Brussels: 🏘Where to stay: We stayed in an AirBnB in Saint-Gilles, which is not only within walking distance of Brussels Zuid-Midi Station (where international trains depart from), but also some sweet bakeries, restaurants and bars to pop to. 🍽Where to eat and drink: We spent most of our time eating and drinking around Rue Haute and Parvis de Saint-Gilles. Some highlights include Pierre Et Louise for some Belgian specialities, Baba Ganoush for Lebanese food, Le Petit Lion and Brasserie Verschmueren for laid-back beers. 🎨Things to do: We enjoyed wandering the vibrant streets coming off Rue Haute and there were plenty of secondhand stores in that area. The René Magritte museum was excellent, showcasing the works of the Belgian surrealist. We visited the Parliamentarium, the Visitor's Centre at the European Parliament (as walking tours of the Parliament itself aren't running in 2023) - it had the potential to be really engaging but it was organised largely around audio-guide devices that failed on the day! Similarly, we visited the Comic Arts museum hoping to see some Tintin - it was an interesting journey through the history of comic art, but Tintin wasn't there anymore due to some rights restrictions..(slightly too close home for a media lawyer on holiday). How to pack with hand luggage only 💼 Whether you're travelling for a weekend away or an extended trip, packing with hand luggage/carry-on only can reduce costs and friction for your journey. If you're into your fashion, however, it can feel like a challenge to get your outfit opportunities into one small case and backpack. Here's some tips on how to maximise your outfits with hand luggage only: 1. Pack according to a colour pallette. Pick 2-3 complimentary colours for your outfits and stick to neutrals for the rest. For my interrail trip, I've packed a green and blue colour pallette, with a few bits of red. 2. Pack outfits not items. Don't just pack your favourite individual items, instead you should pack a capsule wardrobe of items that can be mixed and matched together in multiple ways. Test this out in advance by trying your items on and checking that they work together. 3. Pack with a strong foundation. Base your outfits around wearable basics that perform day to night. For my interrail trip, I've packed comfortable and breathable cotton and linen basics, like black linen trousers, cream coloured jeans and cotton striped t-shirts. 4. Maximise variety with accessories. Pack hats, silk scarves, coloured socks etc. to add some variety to your outfits, whilst not taking up additional space in your case. 5. Maintain your clothes whilst your away. Rewear items multiple times by hanging them up at the end of the day and spot cleaning any spillages. Clothes made with natural fibres like cotton and linen will stay fresher for longer. If you're planning an extended trip, book accomodation that has a washing machine or pack some hand wash (easier on flight-free trips without liquid restrictions) to wash and rewear your clothes.
