Do you ever want to do something else? People ask my sisters and I this question all the time when they see us writing, when all we talk about is writing, when writing and reading find their way into every conversation. The truth is...no. Writing is what we love. Crafting stories is what we love! Maybe some days we don't talk about it as much, maybe we take a break and do something else. But we always come back to writing. Stories are just something we can't get enough of whether reading them, writing them, or in Jaidie's case also drawing them. Stories are moving and powerful and...dangerous. So many stories these days are riddled with dangers. Explicit language and scenes that should never grace the pages of a book let alone a Young Adult book. My sisters and I in our small way are fighting back against the darkness of the culture. Pouring light into the darkness and sending it to flight. As Master Finnick in Unfortunate Events says: "In the eyes of the One that made us; we're all warriors, fightin' on battlefields every day. As a part of their blog tour, I not only got to interview them (post coming soon, keep your eyes peeled!) but I also got to read and review this awesome book. The world of Unfortunate Events immediately sucked you in from page one. The characters were three dimensional and vivid, and there was plenty of action and adventure that kept you hooked and on the edge of your seat. Not only did it have humor and some good twists that made it an enjoyable read, but it also had well written character growth that made you easily relate to the characters. This was one of my favorites of my recent reads, and I highly recommend this clean Christian fantasy novel. I can’t wait to see what happens next! And without further introduction ... MY REVIEW Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a review. Characters: I enjoyed seeing Kahtan grow over the course of this book, and his developing friendships with Gaven, Sage, and Wixley were great. I wasn’t a huge fan of Wixley, Maisley, and her brother when they were first introduced; but they grew on me as the story progressed. I’m looking forward to seeing more of everyone in future books. Language: Clean. Moral/theme: This novel featured themes of friendship, courage, and perseverence. I was glad to see that the characters referenced the Creator. Plot: Plenty of action, adventure, high stakes, and humor kept the plot moving right along. I did feel bad for poor Kahtan. He had a rough time … Romance: This novel didn’t contain a romance. Writing: Kaytlin, Marisa, and Jaiden Phillips’ writing style worked great for this book. Everything flowed smoothly, and I could picture what was going on. Overall: Unfortunate Events was an exciting read that I’d recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction, non-magical fantasy, and YA novels. I’m excited to read the second book when it comes out!
