On this day in 1993, Eazy-E protégés Blood of Abraham, a Jewish hip hop group, released their debut album ‘Future Profits’. The album gained publicity from ads centered on large text proclaiming “Jesus was a Black Jew”. Blood of Abraham was sighed to Ruthless Records, a record label founded by N.W.A. member Eric “Eazy-E” Wright. The group composed of members Benjamin “MC Benyad” Mor and David “MC Mazik” Saevitz. They gained a minor following that eventually led them to wider exposure through a television appearance on ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ in 1994. A key characteristic of the group was their unapologetic Jewish identity. Their best-known track, "N*ggaz and Jewz (Some Say K*kes)", was a call for Black and Jewish unity. The song featured a verse from Eazy-E, as well as the first recorded appearance of will.i.am, known at the time as Will 1X. Will’s association with the group likely lead to him chanting the Hebrew phrases “mozel tov” and “l’chaim” throughout the Black Eyed Peas song “I Gotta Feeling”, the highest selling digital single in the United States. It also likely explains why Mor directed the video for the song. Although Blood of Abraham has been on hiatus since 2000, the members have continued working in entertainment. Seattle Hip Hop (photo) Series... Nissim Black (then D. Black) I met Nissim sometime around 2004. He was going by D. Black at that time. I remember thinking, WOW, this guy is very dedicated and serious but also very young. I think he was around 17 or 18 when I met him and he was serious, uber professional, and no-nonsense. I'm kinda light and even goofy at times and meeting someone so much younger and so serious threw me off a bit. It's not that he didn't laugh. I remember we laughed our assess off about some thing or another, sitting down with Ricardo Frazer when we first met. But he had a no-nonsense air about him. He was also very real. He wasn't trying to be anything other than who he was at that very time. No extras. I wanted to match his presence with our photo shoot: simple. no-nonsense. serious, and real. We shot in and around my photo studio which was in the basement of the old OK Hotel at that time. I was just down the hall from "The Pharmacy" Vitamin D.'s studio and Lala of Funk e Soul rented out my place, eventually taking it over when I left town. There were fashion designers, record labels, small start-ups, and other creatives down there. I loved that rich (a lil grimy) environment full of history and creativity. We shot with simple light. I used angles that matched his presence and not his age. His eyes held deep history and I felt them fascinating in that way. It's been wild to see where he has taken his career.
