Monster mash: We last met Delissa Joseph on 20-21 March at Fitz-George and Fitz-James Avenues. His vast Marble Arch Hotel opened in 1907, but this isn’t it; after a mere quarter century, the Marble Arch was demolished and replaced by another blockbuster, the Cumberland Hotel. J Lyons was involved again: this was their third big West End hotel, after the Strand and Regent Palaces. Architect FJ Wills designed a matching block of flats on the other side of Great Cumberland Street, and covered the south-facing facades of both buildings with ponderous Portland Stone; around the back, brickwork and deco detailing took over. The overall impression is of lumpen imperial massiveness. The hotel was formally inspected by George V and Queen Mary before it opened; who knows what they would have made of later blue-plaqued resident Jimi Hendrix. The external stodge gave no hint of the interior, which comprised 1000 bedrooms and numerous public spaces decorated in peach, salmon pink and pale pea-green (good enough to eat), with a lighting system described by the management as “potted sunshine”. Marble jostled with vitrolite, walnut veneers and tubular steel furniture. It must have been a riot. Of course, hotel interiors rarely last; hubristically, an attempt was made in 2018 to rebrand the old Cumberland as the Hard Rock Hotel, which sadly makes me think of John Entwistle. This turkey was laid to rest after just four pandemic-ridden years, and the Cumberland sails on under its old name. Leo the Lyons: perhaps few will shed a tear when Kensington Centre has been razed, though I will continue to howl with frustration at our inability to build structures that last, or are easily adaptable; but what is of most interest on this doomed 1980s office site is its history. This Hammersmith Road address used to be home to Cadby Hall, the beating heart of J Lyons, caterers, restaurateurs, hoteliers, bakers, cakemakers and agents of social revolution. There is no room here to discuss the impact of the teashops and Corner Houses, the Trocadero, the Wimpys and Golden Eggs, Lyons Maid ice cream or Green Label tea. But we should tip our hat to LEO, the Lyons Electric Office, the world’s first business computer. Initially developed to automate the replenishment of goods to the company’s outlets, LEO was progressively improved to take on payroll, invoicing and a range of other clerical tasks. It worked, and LEOs were sold to (amongst others) the Ford Motor Company, the Met Office and the GPO. Britain was leading the world! Obviously, this couldn’t last. Lyons sold LEO to English Electric in 1963, and a series of further mergers ended with ICL, which was sold to the Japanese Fujitsu in 1990. Meanwhile, old LEO machines churned out telephone bills until 1981; and also meanwhile, J Lyons was sold to Allied Breweries and Cadby Hall closed down. Which leaves us, briefly, with a 1980s glass box which I like to think was the home of the Cabbage Patch Dolls importer, or perhaps Ritz Video Rentals. Another office block will take its place. New adventures in mudlarking & Co. A small clear glass bottle embossed with "J. LYONS & CO LTD", opening up a history of tea and a herstory of 'Gladys' and 'Nippies'. ⬇️ J. Lyons was a British restaurant chain, food manufacturing, and hotel conglomerate founded in 1884. Several Lyons cake products are still available today. 🎡In 1894 the company started a teashop in Piccadilly, London, and from 1909 developed this into a chain of teashops. The company also ran high class restaurants, like the Trocadero (1895), and hotels all in London. ➡️☕Pic 2: In 1918, to increase sales in northern England, Lyons bought the old established tea company Horniman & Sons. From the 1930s Lyons began to develop a pioneering range of teas, biscuits and cakes that were sold across the world. ➡️ 👩🍳Pic 3: A Nippy was a waitress who worked in the extremely popular J. Lyons & Co. tea shops and cafés in London. Beginning in the late 19th century, a J. Lyons waitress was called a 'Gladys'. From 1926, because the waitresses nipped (moved quickly) around the tea shops, the term "Nippy" came into use. Nippies wore a distinctive maid-like uniform with a matching hat. The Nippy soon became a national icon. 💍👰Lyons was very careful to maintain the Nippy image as wholesome and proper — strict cleanliness standards applied for Nippy uniforms, and before World War II J. Lyons wouldn't hire married women as Nippies. PLUNGE!... How I felt in the lead up to teaching my first public (Zoom) yoga class today... (And then I LOVED every second of it, of course 😂.) . Insanely amazing artwork by @j.lyonsart 🙌 . . I’ve had the phrase ‘fear is a shark’ in my mind for a long time now. As a little one, I developed an illogical fear of sharks after sneakily watching Jaws without permission. In my late teens, I was in an abusive relationship, which took a massive bite out of my confidence. . . Yoga is one of the only things - love is the other - that motivates me to work through my fears, rather than submerging myself in avoidance or comfort zones. I’m still fascinated with sharks (they’re amazing), but these days, I’m even more fascinated by fear - and how we respond to it. The refurb included body, a complete repaint and pump overhaul. Five Star Fire use to be the American LaFrance dealer (ALF of Southern New England).
