We love @triple_j 😋 We wanted to highlights some amazing renditions, seeing that Smino’s cover of “Roses” just dropped! Some songs are almost impossible to cover, as they are so iconic. “Venus As A Boy” features Björk’s singular vocals that are incredibly difficult to replicate, and “When Doves Cry” by Prince left an indelible impression on anybody that heard it in the 80’s. For Joey and Kali to even attempt those covers, much less do such a good job, takes a lot of bravery and self belief. 🔍 Shoutout the Australian Broadcasting/Radio organization @triple_j for giving these artists the platforms and opportunity to give us these amazing renditions! Bright Future - Adrianne Lenker (2024) I listened to this album on a plane on the way back from the city I’m going to move to in a couple months, and of course when you leave a place to go back home there’s a part of you which wants to throw yourself out the plane, so naturally as I’m already sad about leaving I thought then would be a good time to listen to the new Adrianne Lenker and like I predicted, it made me so much more sad. I was worried for this album for the reason that it wasn’t songs, an album I consider to be one of the absolute best of the decade thus far. songs feels very simplistic, anything and zombie girl are so effective because they only have Lenker and her guitar and while that’s also the case here, these songs have a lot more going on. Sadness As A Gift reminds me a lot of something we’d hear from Dragon New Warm Mountain, it’s Appalachia influence with Lenker’s heartbreaking lyrics and background vocals make this song amazing. Fool might be the best track, the way the guitar strings feel so heavily plucked with each chord sounds crispy, the layering of vocals is amazing and the lyrics where Lenker starts mentioning all of her friends and family and what they’ve been up to is so personal it feels like a freeze frame at the end of an 80’s movie. No Machine reminds me a lot of songs, it’s just the guitar with lyrics of hopeless devotion, I too do not know where I would go without the person I’m in love with, very relatable song. Free Treasure is beautiful, I love what Lenker chooses to focus on in her imagery, the scent of really good food in comparison to love is a really interesting concept and her songwriting continues to impress with Evol, a song where almost every lyric has to do with words spelled backwards and giving them different meanings. Donut Seam has really depressing lyrics but I assume they’re meant to spark change and not make you feel bad. Bright Future is so different from songs, this album feels more like an entire telling of Adrianne Lenker’s life up until now and yeah this is easily album of the year so far. Genre: Contemporary Folk, Americana 9/10 🤕
