After a successful streak at Striker Lee’s stable in the seventies, Cornell Campbell continued to put his falsetto voice effectively to work in the eighties. On this album he was produced by Junjo Lawes, the next Gorgon Don of the Kingston studio scene. Campbells voice got a more soft touch to it on this record, which gives the songs more of a lovers feeling. The pure roots edge of the Striker Lee productions isn’t there anymore, what remains is still worth a few bucks. The High Tme Players provide the silky melodies grounded in brutal basslines. On the cover mister Campbell is sharply dressed in his three piece suit and tie as a true business man ready to sell some heavy monster tunes. 🚁 To celebrate the 40th anniversary of John Holt’s iconic Police in Helicopter LP we’re issuing a rare 1983 12-inch single mix of the title track – informally known as the ‘Sirens Mix’ – to streaming. It carries the urgency of that period in which the United States government invested heavily in and guided Jamaica’s anti-marijuana program. Jamaican reggae artist John Holt wrote the song as he flew across the island and witnessed helicopters circling above burning marijuana fields. He put the lyrics together on a cocktail napkin during that short flight from Montego Bay to Kingston, channeling a particularly deep anti-colonial sentiment among Jamaica’s working class with the lines: “If you continue to burn up the herbs / We’re going to burn down the cane fields.” . Released in 1990 on the 'Wild Apache' label, in '95 for 'Massive B' on the 'Golden Hen' riddim and in '99 on Steelie & Clevie's 'Street Sweeper' riddim. Anthony Moses Davis (born 22 August 1973), better known by his stage name Beenie Man, is a Grammy award-winning Jamaican reggae dancehall recording artist. He is referred to as the world's "King of Dancehall". Davis was born in the Waterhouse district of Kingston in 1973. He was involved in the music industry from a young age, starting toasting at the age of five, and was encouraged by his uncle Sydney Knowles, who played drums for Jimmy Cliff. He won the Tastee Talent contest in 1981, and Radio DJ Barry G introduced him to local sound system operators, who helped to establish the popularity of the young deejay, who became known as Beenie Man. He recorded his debut single, "Too Fancy", with record producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes in 1981, with Lawes also including him on the 1983 album Junjo Presents Two Big Sounds alongside established stars such as Dillinger, Fathead, and Ringo. His debut album, The Invincible Beenie Man: The Ten Year Old DJ Wonder was produced by Bunny Lee and released in 1983, his first hit single following the same year with the Winston Holness-produced "Over the Sea". In 1984 Beenie Man recorded some material with Barrington Levy (released ten years later), but his music career was put on hold while he finished school, and spent time travelling to the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada. Beenie Man continued performing and honed his craft beside the then dominant dancehall figures including Ninjaman, Admiral Bailey and Shabba Ranks. He found his artistic home at the Shocking Vibes studio where he continued to record singles with only moderate success in the early 1990s. His career gained momentum after a performance at the Reggae Sunsplash festival in 1992, and a rivalry with Bounty Killer began the following year after Beenie Man was accused of stealing Bounty Killer's style and catch phrases. 🔊 This crucial Greensleeves classic from Hugh Mundell is now up on @vprecords’ @bandcamp! . ‘Mundell’ is now available digitally in high quality WAV / Lossless Audio for the first time ever 🙌 . The album would become a cult classic and enhance the prolific 22-year-old singer’s reputation as one of the greatest in reggae. The release was his first on #Greensleeves, which was becoming the most relevant label globally for new reggae in the early 1980s, and 1982 was a standout year with Mister Yellowman, Michael Prophet’s Gunman, Michigan and Smiley’s Downpression, and Johnny Osbourne’s Never Stop Fighting all hitting the racks. . Clocking in at just over 30 minutes, with its eight songs, Mundell arguably doesn’t have a weak moment, mixing largely spiritual lyricism, exemplified on “Red Gold and Green” and “Rasta Have The Handle,” and a handful of love songs, such as the spiteful “Jacqueline.” The sound represented a shift from the rough rockers of Augustus Pablo to the sparse rub-a-dub style associated with producer Henry Junjo Laws, the Roots Radics band, and engineer Scientist. . Within 18 months of its release and following one more album, Hugh Mundell was shot to death in a car while traveling with his close friend Junior Reid, depriving reggae of one of its shining lights. 🎤BARRINGTON LEVY - LOOKING MY LOVE 🎤 In 1979 Shaolin Temple, Barrington's debut album, marked a change in reggae music, along with the rhythm supplied by Roots Radics bands go on to define early dancehall music. To underline this change the album was mixed at King Tubby's Studio by the young Scientist. Shaolin Temple, produced by the legendary Henry Junjo Lawes, includes hits like "Ah Yah We Deh" "Shine Eye Gal" and the sweet "Looking My Love" here presented with my original 45 single released in 1979 on "Jah Guidance" label, the same of the entire album.
