#PhotoLondonTakeover by @cranekalmanbrightongallery The Brighton gallery’s focus was always photography, something I had a real love for and I think begun as a child pouring through the pages of Life Magazine and The Observer Colour Supplement with amazing picture stories that would take you around the world to discover people and places you had never seen before. When I opened the gallery, I felt that photography was on the ‘crest of a wave’ of interest; I couldn’t believe the lack of serious interest in photography in the UK by comparison with our European neighbours and the US. As it turned out, we were a little ahead of the curve! Karine Laval’s dreamy, meditative image captures figures suspended in a sun-drenched, bleached-out, blue-tinged landscape. Shown at one of the first Photo London’s, the image is part of an early series, ‘The Pool’, by the French artist documenting human life at leisure around outdoor swimming pools and lidos across Europe. The Pando Forest is an incredible ecosystem in Utah’s Fishlake National Park. Connected by one colossal root system, this forest is home to 40,000 individual trees which propagate by cloning themselves in times of environmental stress. Laval’s unique depiction of the Pando Forest invites you to become immersed in another world, so near, and yet so far from our own. Creating small, temporary interventions in the natural landscape, Laval takes natural and artificial light and captures the response through reflective surfaces. Here rests Lola Montez (1821-1861), born Eliza Rosanna Gilbert, Countess of Landsfeld, better known by the stage name Lola Montez. Here rests Charlotte Canda, the daughter of a former officer in Napoleon’s army who was in a fatal accident on her nineteenth birthday. The mostly worn away inscription read: “DIED SUDDENLY BY FALLING FROM A CARRIAGE.” Her fiancé killed himself out of grief and was buried nearby on unconsecrated ground. In celebration of International Women’s Day I’m sharing some of the resting places of remarkable women I photographed for The New York Times Magazine at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Here, Margaret Pine (1778-1857), who was the last slave of New York State and belonged to the family of Wynant Van Zandt of Little Neck, LI. She was born in Westchester county, in the year 1778 and was presented to Mr. Van Zandt by his father, in her infancy. She remained in the family until the year 1813, at which period, she not being willing to remain in the country, Mr. Van Zandt gave her a release to the following effect: "The bearer, Margaret Pine is my servant. She has lived in my family from her infancy. She is sober, honest and faithful, but is averse to living in the country. She has my permission to go to New York, for the purpose of going out to service and to receive her wages, until this permission is revoked by me, of which due notice will be given to any person or persons in whose employ she may be. I further declare that it is my wish, and I am now willing to manumit her according to law. "Given under my hand at Little Neck Farm, this 16th day of September, 1813. "WYNANT VAN ZANDT Margaret had acted in the capacity of nurse to the whole family of 11 sons. It is a singular fact, that, having so many children, Mrs. Van Zandt never had a daughter. Margaret refused to be manumitted. She told her master, when he proposed to do so, that he had her services for the best part of her life, and that she wished him to take care of her as long as she lived, and he willingly consented. Dr. Charles A. 'Our mental health needs occasional rescue by nature, and yet nature, more than ever, needs rescuing by us. Accordingly, the pandemic has seen a surge in gardening and garden culture, largely for those unable to eject from their urban surroundings to experience nature. A new installation by French-American artist, Karine Laval, evokes this idea of the garden and the contextual reciprocity of rescue with surreal, optical reverie at the national museum of Chateaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau, France. In the idyllic floral-scapes of the Malmaison gardens, Laval interweaves saturated, freeform prints. […] Laval’s aptitude for surrealism challenges the gallery construct—often a vestibule of rescue, but that which imposes rules and codes that are not always liberating. The artist remarks on the works’ positive potential, “I hope that these ‘environmental installations’ will also have a significant and profoundly positive effect on the health and well-being of the visitors or passersby, as the therapeutic benefits on the mind, body, and spirit of being connected to, and surrounded by, images of light, color, and nature are well-documented and profound.” Laval’s installation unravels the notion of ‘thinking outside the box.’ Instead, Laval has dismantled the ‘box’ as a whole and is challenging us to simply ‘think outside.’ After all, is it our imagination that will rescue us from life’s occasional tedium and inanity, or our imagination that could use a little fresh air and reprieve?' — FLAUNT Magazine #flaunt #chateaumalmaison #chateaudemalmaison #karinelaval #artinstallation #publicart #contemporaryart #gardens #gardenart #jardins
