Argentinian director Gasper Noé has directed five feature films over the past twenty-two years, starting with 'I Stand Alone' in 1998. In 2018, Noé's fifth helmed film, 'Climax', was released. The movie follows a group of young dancers as they gather in a remote and empty school building to rehearse on a cold and wintry night. The all-night celebration soon turns into a hallucinatory nightmare when they learn that their sangria is laced with LSD. The ninety-seven-minute long movie is split into two halves. The first half is fairly tame compared to what follows, except for the opening shot. It features an incredibly well-choreographed dance sequence and spends a lot of the time setting up the characters through several conversations, mainly containing two dancers talking to each other about the other dancers. But from the moment the second round of credits appear on-screen, roughly around the forty-four-minute mark, the movie quickly transitions into something almost unrecognisable to what came before it. You won't be at fault for not enjoying 'Climax'. The arthouse style and unconventional storytelling are not for everyone and some of the content shown in this film is quite disturbing and unnerving, but it is hard to argue that this is a poorly constructed film. Both in terms of filmmaking and acting, this movie is impressive. The cinematography is breathtaking, the one-shot sequences are technical marvels and the direction is impeccable. The performances from the young dancers are also fantastic; it is truly incredible the actors were able to deliver such believable performances under the pressure of long-spanning one-takes. Terrifying, self-indulgent and nauseating, 'Climax' is a visually stunning and jaw-dropping piece of French cinema that is as unsettling as it is unforgettable.

“Climax” (2018) de #GasparNoe. El cine de #Noe no es para todo el mundo, y quien recuerde aún “Irreversible” sabe a lo que me refiero. Yo entonces salí del cine mareado, con dolor de cabeza e impactado por la película que acababa de ver. En este caso, el director se ha comedido un poco (no es tan explícito) pero el resultado es igualmente sobrecogedor. Un grupo de bailarines que ha estado ensayando un montaje con una coreógrafa en una casa asilada en la montaña celebran una fiesta que se va de las manos cuando alguien droga la sangría que están bebiendo. Visualmente espléndida (como siempre en este autor), en este caso además justificado porque pretende reflejar visualmente el efecto de las drogas en los jóvenes, la película tiene además un claro mensaje político nada desdeñable. Verla en casa no causa el mismo efecto que en el cine (me imagino que en pantalla grande debió ser espectacular) pero en casa no pude apartar la vista de la pantalla desde el principio hasta el final. No apta para todos los gustos, pero muy recomendable para los que quieran disfrutar de propuestas estéticas extremas. Séance 169 : Une fille facile. Rebecca Zlotowski qualifie Une fille facile de conte amoral et le défend en invoquant la liberté des corps et la sensualité. Une fille facile manque terriblement de substance, passant d'une plage à un yacht puis à une villa luxueuse sans que l'on s'intéresse plus avant aux très superficielles péripéties du scénario. Le film est brouillon et ne sait pas où il va. On sent une volonté de vouloir dire quelque chose mais la réalisatrice ne trouve pas le discours porteur pour nous embarquer. Une initiation à la vie , un coup d’œil sur les rapports d’une société inégalitaire, ou les amours en toute liberté de la grande cousine parisienne qui débarque à Cannes et apprend à Sofia comment séduire et repartir vers d’autres aventures. Pour se donner bonne conscience de la filmer comme une bimbo dans un téléfilm de M6, la réalisatrice lui fait parler de Margueritte Duras, dans une scène affligeante, censée la faire briller et casser les clichés. La tirade est grotesque et les références à Rohmer sont ridicules. Les filles chez Rohmer n'aspirent pas ou peu à des sacs Chanel et à des bijoux de luxe. Le désir passe par autre chose. La promotion de la femme objet comme modèle féministe me paraît très étrange. Mina Farid est merveilleuse de naturelle, de fraicheur, spontanéité, candeur et de vraie insouciance, sobre, une fille de son époque. Zahia Dehar est d'une platitude consternante qu’on ose comparer à Brigitte Bardot ! C’est parfaitement risible. I have no words 😶 for what I watched... Climax is a dance film tripped on acid, basically like a big rave gone horrible... Even though the plot was not really elaborated so much, it does show what can occur when someone spikes the punch and things go awry... set in the winter of 1996, when a group of French dancers rehearse in a remote located school, they start to celebrate, then the atmosphere becomes charged with some strange madness and things do not look good for them all, since the sangria was spiked with LCD... while some feel like they’re in paradise, most of them plunge into hell... it did feel a little uneasy at times but the movie was practically golden, (I did kinda compare it to Suspiria) especially having some of the best cinematography... I loved the whole look of the film with many bright, neon colors, and a killer techno soundtrack... it was definitely trippy af... it really felt like I was there and feeling what they were feeling lol... I also liked the camera work where it would show a one continuous take and also showing a lot of upside filming... apparently it’s loosely based on a true story, and filled with non professional dancers, and the actors improvised a lot of their dialogue... I’d rate this an 8/10 for its unique filming techniques and its cool editing, its killer soundtrack and amazing cinematography... definitely don’t watch this while eating bc it can be queasy for some people... so now who wants to go to a rave?! O longa Climax foi filmado em 15 dias e tinha 5 páginas de roteiro. Estava na dúvida sobre assisti-lo ou não. Diante de alguns comentários, decidi fazê-lo. É um filme diferente e que vai mexer com a plateia. Perturbador é uma boa definição. Acho que vocês podem viver bem sem ele. O 1o número de dança foi o único coreografado. O resto foi escolha de cada um dos dançarinos. Caso assistam, prestem bastante atenção às entrevistas iniciais.

Séance 219 : Climax. Dans un espace en huis clos ramassé entre une salle de danse et un dortoir, le tout relié par un long couloir lugubre, Gaspar Noé passe en revue toutes les composantes de son œuvre. Comme toujours, le réalisateur divise et le très bon côtoie le très étrange. Soit le récit d'une soirée entre jeunes danseurs qui tourne au vinaigre quand ils découvrent que du LSD a été versé dans la sangria qu'ils ont bu en quantité... Climax se contente d'une scène sublime de danse, le tout chorégraphié par le rythme du Supernature de Cerrone. Le problème est que cette forme somptueuse n'est au service de rien. On cherche en vain des personnages ou une histoire. Parmi la troupe de danseurs, on ne s'attache à personne. Climax ne propose aucun point de vue, aucune morale, aucune lecture des événements. Aucun des fils égrenés en début de film n'est tiré. Noé filme de façon interminable des acteurs absolument nullissimes essayant d'improviser des dialogues digne d'une sitcom des années 90. Climax est un mauvais nanar paresseux qui se prend au sérieux. Dans le genre, Mother laisse au moins le soin au spectateur la découverte.
