Two more barrel aged beers I’ve had a while ago. Scotch whisky barrel aged, so “on topic”. 😛 The first one, brewed by Kees, from the Netherlands, was on the “smoky” side, as they used Islay casks (no mention of the distillery, but I found a store which specifies it’s Laphroaig - same as the other Kees Barrel Project I’ve had a couple of years back). Another funny thing, they wrote it’s aged for 12 months on the front of the can, and aged for 20 months on the back of the can. Which one is it? 😅 The store mentioned above says it’s 20. 🤷♂️ Btw, the light was dim in the taproom, I included a downloaded picture, so I can remember the actual colours on the can. The second one, by Laugar brewery from Spain, is a blend of Porto wine and scotch whisky barrel aged beers - this wasn’t smoky, but very sweet, a lot of port wine influence. Both were very good, but I have to say, after a 10% abv and a 12.4% abv, I had to drink a lot of water before moving on to a whisky dram. Kees Barrel Project Peated 2023. Dutch peated imperial stout aged in Laphroaig barrels for (12/20?) months. Malts: Pale, Brown, Cara, Zwart, Chocolade. Hops: Sorachi Ace; Yeast: US-05. 10% abv, EBC: 112, IBU: 48. Laugar Midnight Harvest. Review 3598 - Midnight Harvest 2023 (Porto Wine & Bourbon Whisky Wood aged) - Laugar Brewery - Imperial Stout - ABV 10.0% - Bottle from @beerdeer.se - #sundaystout - This Imperial Stout from @laugarbrewery will be available at Systembolaget this coming Friday. And this is the 2023 edition, not barrel aged, but stored with wooden flakes soaked in bourbon and porto wine. Also, premium cacao is added. This gives an aroma of massive chocolate notes with coffee, sweet liquorice, raisins over the roasted malt base. Taste is sweet, with lots of coffee, dark chocolates and in the back there is dried dark fruits, raisin and a little liquorice. It is a rather complex, yet balanced stout with a little bit of everything. Silky smooth with lots of flavors. Day 3: Siglufjörður to Myvatn This was a lighter driving day as we continued along Iceland’s austerely beautiful north coast, with the end destination of the Myvatn lake area. Along the way we stopped at: -Dalvik, for photo opps of the coast and coffee at @gisli.eirikur.helgi -Akureyri, the biggest town in North Iceland, to get groceries for the air bnb -Godafoss waterfall -@myvatnnaturebaths (bookable in advance online, $50 per adult, money well-spent) When I planned this trip in February of 2023, a lot of hotels around Myvatn were already booked up for late July. We opted to stay in an @airbnb room in a private home outside of Laugar, where the other bedrooms were also rented out to travelers. This meant there were 6 adults sharing one bathroom, but it also meant we had access to a full kitchen for prepping meals (a top money saver in pricey Iceland). Cerberus : gardien de l’entrée des Enfers, empêchant les morts de s’échapper et les vivants de venir récupérer certains disparus. Un animal mythologique, dont, à l’heure actuelle, il est possible de s’interroger sur l’utilité d’un tel gardien. Au final, ce que nous appelons « l’Enfer » est-il réellement le lieu où sont stockés ceux qui nous ont quittés. Les morts, une fois morts, se rejoignent-ils tous vraiment dans un même endroit ? Et surtout, l’Enfer n’est-il pas ici, dans le monde dans lequel nous vivons ? Monde, qui, sous couvert d’idéologie et de possession, n’hésite pas à massacrer son prochain (comme son Ancien d’ailleurs). Tant qu’à massacrer quelque chose, je jette mon dévolu sur une double red ale. Pour débuter, le whisky vous saisit le nez, rond, vanillé et boisé (presque du bourbon au final), accompagné de noix. Progressivement, le caramel se fait une place, auquel s’ajoute un fond légèrement vineux et oxydatif (de type porto rouge qui, avec le temps, me fait plus penser à du vin jaune). En bouche, c’est tout d’abord un léger profil de vin jurassien qui vient chatouiller les papilles, bien vite bercé par une aromatique du caramel et une douce sucrosité. Le whisky impose ensuite sa présence, d’abord relativement neutre pour exprimer de moins en moins discrètement un profil tourbé. La finale est alcooleuse et chaleureuse, finement tourbée et oxydative (vin jaune). Verdict ? Atypique et caractériel, ce breuvage se laisse néanmoins consommer avec plaisir. La chaleur dégagée par celui-ci lèche lentement l’œsophage et l’estomac, finissant doucement par mordre aussi le cerveau. Et si, comme cette bière, Cerbère s’était laissé apprivoiser et avait abandonné son poste de gardien ? N’est pas cela le monde actuel ? Une fuite progressive des entrailles de l’Enfer vers nos terres autrefois verdoyantes ?
