"Most of us have heard about the importance of puppy socialization by now, as the dog behavior and veterinary communities have spread awareness of this critical period of development for our dogs. While experts differ on the exact timing of this stage, the general consensus is that the time between 3 - 16 weeks of age presents a once-in-a-lifetime window of opportunity to set the stage for the rest of your puppy's life. �While this is increasingly common knowledge among pet families, most people don't understand the whole picture of socialization - what it is, what it is for, and what needs to be done to provide for your puppy's future - during this time. Puppy socialization is not just about playing with other puppies and people! Many of us have learned that attendance in a puppy class and meeting some of our friends and neighbors is enough. But socialization is actually far more than this. The purpose of an animal's socialization period is to establish an overall template for the rest of her life - to learn about her world and all the things in it that are normal, and to understand how to interact with that world. In order to provide a complete socialization for your puppy, you will want to provide many positive experiences with ALL the kinds of people, animals, places, sights, sounds, smells, events, encounters, etc. that will likely be part of your dog's life in the years to come!" Yeah!!! 💪💪 I'm definitely starting to feel a bit more like myself. I went to physical therapy today and got my legs moving. It's slow, but it's progress. We're going to make a video on Monday at PT. Then, afterwards, I was planning to swim, but the pool was closed. Instead of leaving, I decided it was the right time to brave the weight room. I have definitely missed lifting. I’m sure you’d agree, ‘parallels’ are all around us every day! It’s a beautiful thing! Some we spot easily, others not so easily. Take any relationship, for instance – how do WE want to feel within that relationship? What makes it a good healthy relationship and/or what makes it unhealthy for us and/or the other? What about our relationship with ourSELF – what’s that like? (a parallel may be tucked away in there 😉) How do we want the OTHER to leave an interaction feeling? ‘Care over Compliance’ is a phrase I first heard used by a tremendous leader in my industry - Andrew Hale (you can find him here - https://dogcc.org and here - https://www.youtube.com/c/dogcentredcare for loads of free resources to learn more!) I love this phrase as it’s only a few words yet packed with incredibly powerful takeaways to consider and hopefully implement! My teaching prioritizes care and relationship and quite literally kicks ‘task and compliance’ to the curb! There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with teaching our dogs skills – IF they’re having fun, our expectations are in check, we put care for their feedback FIRST and adjust how (what & why) we teach to support what they’re conveying.
