President Mohammed bin Zayed's leadership has driven the UAE's diversification, with substantial investments in military modernization, earning it the moniker "Little Sparta," and establishing itself as the Middle East's financial hub. In its pursuit of global influence akin to Singapore, the UAE has forged strategic alliances, notably with Israel, and has become a key partner for worldwide powers, especially the United States. I love the tenacity of my neighbor who tends this little patch of dirt that probably used to have a tree in it but no longer... The flowers might not be native but it brings beauty and a sense of care to this little patch of earth poking through the concrete sidewalk. . The text is paraphrased from something I heard this week and it's been rolling around in my head all week. I finally listened to @placeandpurposelive podcast and in passing I'm pretty sure they mentioned this Ian Hamilton Finlay quote that actually reads "Certain gardens are described as retreats when they are really attacks." I had to learn more and found this blog post on Root Simple, "Finlay’s garden became a literal battle ground for his disputes with the Scottish Arts Council and with local town council bureaucrats. At various times his art was seized by the police and he became embroiled in a tax dispute with local officials. ... But Finlay’s garden (dubbed “Little Sparta” after the conflict) also serves as a broader metaphor for every garden as an act of resistance against injustice, war and the destruction of the natural world." . The second text and graphic in my garden in a previously grim dirt patch in the back on my rented apartment quad. I started it during the pandemic (like so many others) and so in that way relate to Finlay who was agoraphobic and didn't leave his home and garden for almost 30 years. . I don't know if I'm actually attacking any of the world issues I want to attack through my garden but I believe it when I see my neighbors patch of flowers so I'll have to just let all that keep rolling around in my head for a bit to figure out what it all means. The wind doesn't stop blowing for even a second, the sky changes in the blink of an eye. It was a place where everything, including 'a great deal of weather' as written in Sue Finlay's essay, became his artwork. The Friends of the Red House Museum launch this year's Autumn Talks on Wednesday 4 October, 2pm. Opening the series, is a talk by Dr Gill Clarke on the life and achievements of stone carver and letter cutter, John Andrew (1933 - 2021). Gill was guest curator of our current exhibition, 'John Andrew: A Life in Letters', which tells the story of John's extraordinary, diverse career and the contribution he made to the lettering arts. John's work can still be seen today in Christchurch and Bournemouth through his public commissions, yet this local artist's craftsmanship and versatility brought him nationally significant collaborations and his work is also held in national collections. Dr Gill Clarke is a biographer and art historian. She has published widely on twentieth-century British art.
