In the conservatory, we decided to take on some of the renovations ourselves. The flooring was one of the most challenging projects so far. It took two days just to cut all the perimeter tile. All the glass on the east side has been replaced and the glass on the west side was removed and cleaned. Years of encrusted dirt was cleaned from the aluminum frame while the glass was out. The amazing ruin of the #1881 Lord & Burnham-designed greenhouse at Lyndhurst. This structure once housed one of the best orchid collections in the United States. Hopefully, one day, we'll be able to see the greenhouse restored to its former glory. . . In the 1860s, George Merritt acquired the Lyndhurst estate from William Paulding, the former mayor of New York City and Lyndhurst's original owner. Merritt hired landscape gardener Ferdinand Mangold, who drained the surrounding swamps, opening 20 acres to vast lawns with extensive vegetable gardens bordered by fruit trees and grape vines. In #1870, Merritt built a large Gothic Revival greenhouse, which burned down in #1881 after the property was acquired by Jay and Helen Gould. The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory is a greenhouse at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. The conservatory was designed by Lord & Burnham Co. in the Italian Renaissance style. Its major design features are inspired by the Palm House at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace. Groundbreaking took place on January 3, 1899 and construction was completed in 1902. The primary designer of the building was William R. Cobb, an architect employed by Lord & Burnham and the conservatory was primarily made of steel, cast iron, wood and glass. The building is a series of large glass pavilions that are all very open on the inside. The pavilions are laid out symmetrically around the large central Palm House pavilion. The building is divided into eleven pavilions, where each pavilion has a distinct geometry defining it in relationship to adjacent pavilions. We’ve been able to get our sweet peas outside during the day pretty much everyday for the past few weeks, which has been fantastic. Before that we were getting them out in our currently unheated conservatory as much possible while supplementing grow lights indoors on extremely cold days. Pretty pleased with the results so far! A couple of the trainers we sowed in late December, and we sowed the other one in early February. During the coldest temperatures every year the heating system without fail partially or fully goes out. This year it was the glass greenhouse to give us trouble. We thought, “Dang it! These Modine heaters from WildThang have finally died.” FYI WildThang was Mimo’s first cut flower farm in Ashland, MO in operation from 1994-2003. But no! Those heaters didn’t fail. The gas line running inside the greenhouse on an external wall FROZE. Condensation, debris, and who knows what else from however long ago froze and blocked the gas flow. @mimolovesflowers and @stl.morgan saved the crops with propane heaters, all night effort of watchfulness and changing out fuel tanks, and today Rhymes Heating and Cooling fixed the gas line problem. Tonight the heat is holding.
