This is Friday's poem. I was celebrant at a beautiful celebration of life yesterday and as part of the Committal I wrote something using song lyrics from songs played during the ceremony. I thought I'd try a similar thing, using my five most recently liked songs on Spotify! It was a fun exercise, especially seeing common themes. This is a mix of lines from Ayyboyy, Fink, Moderate, Moulettes and Cat Power! So I can only take credit for selecting and arranging them! Think I'll try this more often, it helps me be slightly more abstract than I might usually be. Hello, hello 👋 how're we all? ☺️ I'm slightly excited to share tonight's poem, this one I was inspired by a couple things to create this piece, namely one of my favourite songs at the moment "Telepath" by @manchesterorchestra - it's such a haunting and evocative song, the lyrics "baby, are you with me? Reading some Greek lyric on the train today - these are by Archilochos. He lived most likely during the eighth century BC (the eclipse to which he referred took place either in 711 or 647 BC). He was the bastard son of a nobleman and an enslaved person, and spent most of his life as a professional soldier taking part in the colonisation of Thasos by his native island of Paros. How Many -To the Lives of the Innocents By Tom Owen How many must the fairest blossoms wither away Before we can walk through the death of shadow's decay? How many must the brightest stars descend from above Before we can read each teardrop's unique love? How many seas must a boat sail Before we can hold each other’s hands frail? How many roads must a dove fly Before the rainbow bridges every tearful eye? How many years can a desert wait, And wait in its own fear and fate, Till the footsteps of a camel come, Breaking the dreamless silence deaf and dumb? How many days and nights will the walls stand Against every weathered heart and weary hand, Till the tiniest green gathers and grows Within the innocent gaze where spring goes? How many, and so many.... How many times must we look up to the sky, Until every teardrop rises from the earth’s cry, Shining in the dust in the wind with a starry smile? Postscript: Last Sunday, I conducted an online vote in Cambridge regarding the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine (please refer to the result in my Story today). Subsequently, many friends asked about my stance on this matter. Among them, a message from a respected friend proved particularly insightful as it suggested adding a fourth option to the vote: Option D - The lives of the innocents. I believe this profound idea effectively elucidates my position: I consistently stand with the innocent lives, support those who have been insulted and injured, and empathise with every sorrowful embodiment of Christ's presence in our mortal world. Thank you to everyone who participated in the vote! And heartfelt gratitude goes out to all dear friends who provided me with fantastic ideas that inspired me to create such a humble poem.
