Here is an excerpt from that review: "For the first time ever, Piper-Heidsieck created a custom Cuvée, to be sold in retail by a client. Only one batch was produced, based on the terrific 2012 vintage. The light dosage perfectly matches the style.". It got 90p, and even better if including value for money for Viking Line Club members at that time ... 🛳️ Anyway, back to the recent edition by @essiavellan, now in #magnumchampagne and still only available at the Viking Line ferries. Medium clear golden colour and lots of tiny bubbles. Floral and elegantly aromatic. Toasted brioche, almonds, pear and some berries. Fresh, dry, elegant and precise on the palate, yet there's excellent body as well as energy. Sublime mouthfeel and overall balance where the high acidity feels nicely integrated. Good tension and texture. Very long and sensually rich, mouthwatering finish with nice breadiness. Ferdinand Bonnet Grande Réserve NV Brut Magnum Champagne The entry level wine from Bonnet, who's name now changed from Alexandre to Ferdinand. Medium clear golden / straw hue, lots of small bubbles. Fruity, fresh and elegant on the nose. Fairly aromatic and a bit sweet in character. Plum, yellow/green apples, mango, pear, some raspberry gummies candy, a tad of white chocolate, candied orange, elderberries flowers, brioche, honeydew melon and a subtle herbal layer of mint. Medium dry, slightly sweet on the palate where you notice the dosage but it's rather nicely balanced overall against the high acidity, and the mid to late is rather dry actually. Medium bodied, soft, creamy mouthfeel with charming roundness. Long and persistent, rather elegant, fruity yet surprisingly dry, mouthwatering finish without any significant bitterness. Crispy apples, fresh pear, red/black berries, plum, white bread, cookie dough, chalk, peach, grilled lemon. Best after 10-15 min in the glass. Gains fine concentration and mouthfeel as well as some vinous character after aeration. The #magnumeffect creates a nice, slightly mellow, harmonious character with pleasant smoothness. Thus making it easy to appreciate with a fruity, rather straightforward, aperitif style character. 2nd day The bubbles are small but fewer but pretty much the same on the nose. Fruity, quite elegantly aromatic with mostly lusciously sweet yellow fruits. The palate holds up nicely and delivers a similar expression as the day before. Perhaps the sweetness and somewhat sappy fruit is slightly better integrated with the acidity now. Mid to late is still dry, chalky, bready and fruity. Baked yellow apples, juicy pear, some tropical fruits like mango, kiwi, honeydew melon, also there's raspberry candy, tutti-frutti, elderberry flowers, ripe orange / sweet citrus fruits, some berries. Bollinger La Grande Année 2012 Brut Magnum Champagne The "entry level" prestige cuvée from Bollinger that actually is the same wine as R.D. The later does offer extended time on the lees and less dosage. From magnum LGA feels even more complete and already so magnificent. Deep golden, myriads of really tiny bubbles. Super toasty, complex and luxuriously expressive, rather powerful yet pure aromas of toasted brioche, butter, oak, leather, roasted hazelnuts, ripe peach, baked pear, red/blackcurrants, candied orange, ripe apples, some chocolate, croissants, lemon oil and subtle hints of mushrooms. Grand, structured, noble but also so nuanced with fine, soft caressing mousse. Power and harmony in fine-tuned balance. Dense, concentrated fruit but it never feels heavy or chewy, instead there's terrific clarity. Mesmerizing texture and mouthfeel with layers upon layers unfolding, especially after aeration. Medium/full bodied with immense breadth. Almost never-ending finish. Dry, velvety and ultra sophisticated. Dried fruit, cinnamon roll dough, bourbon vanilla, lemon oil, apricot sorbet, crispy pear, a bit of mushrooms, nuts, apple peel, chalk, salinity. This is the cheapest #magnumchampagne available for purchase here in Sweden. As many already know, magnums is an optimal format where several aspects of the wine improves compared to a bottle. Golden hue, loads of bubbles. Fruity, elegant on the nose, quite aromatic. Ripe yellow apples, baked pear, candied citrus fruits, berries, peach candy, apricots, cream, honeydew melon, some brioche. Soft creamy mousse, charmingly fruit forward, slightly mellow with pleasant sweetness as well as concentration. Sure, it's a tad sweet but not especially bothersome thanks to the refreshing acidity. Long, rich, fruity and fairly elegant, silky-smooth finish without any significant bitterness or tartness. Ripe yellow fruits, juicy pear, white bread, strawberry candy, chalky minerality, subtle hints of nuts. Keeps its structure nicely throughout, best after 15+ min. Quite lusciously fruity and concentrated with alluring sweetness after aeration. Not the most complex or exciting NV magnum you can find but it's perfect as an aperitif or party starter when a bottle isn't enough. Medium clear golden, lots of small bubbles. Quite aromatic, fresh, fruity and elegant. Raspberry candy, pear, red apples, pastries, red/blackcurrants, a tad of peach skin. Gets alluringly expressive and somewhat sweet after some time in the glass. Medium bodied, good concentration and charming roundness. A nice balance of freshness, breadiness and sweetness. The dosage feels rather well integrated against the refreshing medium/high acidity. Fine mouthfeel with delicately soft mousse. Long, dry, elegantly mouthwatering, persistent finish with subtle, pleasant vinous bitterness. Rye bread, dried fruit, pastries, berries, chalk, pear, apples, citrus fruits, subtle hints of nuts. Best after 15+ min. Initially a bit tight and disjoint. A charming crowd-pleaser NV #magnumchampagne. Nothing special that stands out but nothing really to complain about either. Gets quite expressive after aeration but doesn't really change overly much in character, though it does approach the bottle's profile after extended time in the glass making them a bit more difficult telling them apart. Baked pear, ripe apples, brioche, cinnamon roll dough, pastries / pralines, candied circuits fruits, ripe orange, acacia honey, raspberry candy and some tropical fruits. Elegantly energetic with fine-tuned power and surprisingly harmonious in character without lacking neither tension nor structure. Delicately soft, caressing mousse, medium/light bodied and somewhat slender yet there's fine depth as well breadth. I’m typically kinda down on Krug collection, I feel like they fall apart pretty quickly in the span of a 4-5 years after release you’re getting bottles oxidizing big time. But out of magnum is a different story. Have had this 82 collection mag twice and both were spectacular. Easy yet powerful. Full of ripe pear fruit, hazelnut and hints of wispy smoke. Family owned Billecart-Salmon definitely knows how to produce outstanding vintage magnums and this legendary 2008 will be a collectors item for decades. Medium/deep clear golden in color and loads of tiny bubbles. Compared to the bottle it's much more expressive yet fresher with mostly primary aromas. Baked yellow apples, yellow tropical fruits / peach, ripe pear and chalk. The palate offers terrific concentration, focus and freshness with luxurious mouthfeel. Good complexity and fine, delicate mousse. Medium/light bodied, posh and rather noble in character. The fruit feels fairly subtle, pure, primary and fine-tuned. Billecart-Salmon Vintage 2008 Bottle or magnum? Magnum or bottle? 🤔 The much anticipated 2008 from family owned Billecart-Salmon spent almost a decade on the lees. Released in 2019 and quickly got a lot of attention, and scored high by several recognised international experts. Similar in colour (condensation on the left glass) and amounts of bubbles. The #magnumchampagne is much more expressive though. More aromatic yet fresher and primary. On the palate it's quite the opposite though in terms of openness. Both young but fantastic and definitely belongs to the top of premium 2008's yet in very different stages of evolution. Benoit Beaufort Prestige Grand Cru Millésime 2012 Brut Magnum Champagne Based in the highly esteemed village #ambonnay. 6th generation grower and the total production is only about 18 000 bottles. Clear golden hue, loads of small bubbles. Rather extrovert, fresh, elegantly fruity. Compared to the 2008, the #magnumchampagne shows little signs of age and there's mostly primary notes initially. Apple peel, candied lemon, brioche, baked pear, orange, plum, yellow tropical fruits and a layer of smokiness. Opens up nicely after some time in the glass. The smokiness diminishes, it then shares a more similar profile as the 2008 with more brioche, dried fruit and butterscotch. Somewhat slender bodied, plain and laid-back in character thus lacks the lovely energy that the 2008 presents. Medium dry, nice roundness and mouthfeel with soft, rich mousse. Good overall balance with fine acidity. Long, dry, chalky, elegant finish. Apples, brioche, ripe plums, toffee, bourbon vanilla. Fairly fruity and undemanding. The #magnumeffect is rather subtle. Perhaps more time is needed here, or it's something else, since the scenario is similar as the last time tasting the magnum, and once again did the 2008 leave a longer lasting impression when tasting them side-by-side. Paired nicely to a homemade toast skagen. 2nd day. Pretty much unchanged. Fruity, fresh, some smokiness. Mostly yellow tropical fruits / honeydew melon, yellow apples, a bit of ginger, subtle berries. Mouthfeel and bubbles intact. Needs some time in the glass but still fairly plain in character. Nevertheless it's rather elegant, chalky, medium dry and slightly sweet, with easy-going fruitiness. Gets a little thin towards the end. Prestige Grand Cru Millésime 2008 Prestige Grand Cru Millésime 2012 Magnum In short: 2008 presents a darker color and bubbles slightly lazier than from the magnum. Also some visible particles in the 2008. The magnum got a more generous and expressive, not surprisingly a bit fresher nose. Both fairly straightforward profile and not overly complex, however the 2008 is definitely in a most wonderful sweet spot now. The magnum didn't stand a chance. So Bouvet! 2016 Chardonnay - wow this definitely still needs time. Lots of depth and stuffing but opens up slowly. Keep! 2015 Millesime - the only Millesime so far to be available in magnums. Very vinous, also a bit tight in this format. 2018 Bissueil - that nose, crazy. Crisp and linear with amazing minerality. A revelation in magnum. 2019 Monts de la Vallee Rose - a rare bottling, so far only released twice. Color was dark almost like a Saignee and that nose, so intoxicating. To create C17, 15 different growers provided grapes from all 17 villages in Champagne rated #grandcru. Only available in magnums. Lots of tiny bubbles in the glass. Greatly aromatic but also classy, nuanced, fresh and refined. Red apples, baked pear, berries, spices and a bit of caramel. The palate offers great complexity with layers upon layers. The crispy, high acidity is nicely integrated thus creating fine structure and backbone. Nice body with splendid roundness, depth and breadth. The mouthfeel is luxuriously luscious. Energetic and focused but also harmonious with its fine-tuned intensity. Mouthwatering and classy finish. Impressive length. Cattier Clos du Moulin MV (Extra) Brut Magnum Champagne The tête de Cuvée from Cattier in a magnificent, mysteriously matte black magnum. 🖤🍾 A 'clos' is a rarity in Champagne since there's so few of such unique, walled plots. A unique micro-climate is created within the walls and the number of bottles produced is usually low. Clear gold shimmering colour, lots of super tiny bubbles. Classy, floral and pure yet luxuriously generous on the nose. White peach, plum, a tad of smokiness / struck matches, chalk, brioche, butter, baked pear, subtle hints of berries, tutti-frutti, pickled ginger and some yellow apples. The razor-sharp acidity is almost overwhelming yet the wine feels brilliantly focused and detailed thanks to the luscious clarity of the fruit. Highly complex and energetic but also so calm, polished and harmonious. Soft, caressing mousse and luxurious mouthfeel. Fine body, somewhat slender actually but there's no shortage of either depth nor breadth. Concentration and tension is top notch yet it feels almost weightless in character. The finish goes on forever it seems. Berries, minerality, subtle chalk / soil, white bread. Quite epic after 20+ min in the glass. So sophisticated and noble yet intense. Together they are implementing the experience and knowledge of David in biodynamic agriculture as well as the French school of good winemaking. Its objective is to create a great white wine, without flower veil and without fortification, based on the respect and care of the soul of Jerez: The Albariza land and the Palomino grape. Located within the best vineyard lands of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in the historic “Pago Miraflores”, taking advantage of the cool climate of the Atlantic Ocean, they have recovered three hectares of mostly old vineyard from ancient mass selections of Palomino fino and Muscat from Chipiona. They use minimal intervention techniques to make the wine: they add minimum sulphur (only 10% of what is usual), they do not use selected yeasts or acids to rectify the acidities, they preserve the lees and they bottle without filtering. 2010 Valdicava BdM en magnum kindly shared on occasion of a visit of faraway old friend. Took a fair bit of coaxing to get going but what a pretty bottle when it did. The last 2010 BdM had were Biondi and Il Poggione and those were very recalcitrant so expected this to follow suit Thanks to early decant, all the pretty notes I like about BdM came out to play by middle of a lazy Sunday dinner. Lovely nose. Supple, attractive warm spiced fruits with good lift and depth. Use the “tokubetsu” (Japanese for special) labeling on sake like a cheat code: even if you don't know the brewery, you can guess it's going to be good. A love/hate aspect to sake is that the rules are stringent. There’s a steep learning curve, but that consistency can be comforting. Tokubetsu throws in a wrench, though, because there is no official definition. It just means that the sake is somehow… different. It’s supposed to have a rice polish ratio of 60%, but there are ways around that, too. The brewer might use a particular rice (here it's Gohyakumangoku), undertake an unusual brewing method, earn organic certification, create the recipe for whales off the Pacific coast, etc. (All true.) Details are ambiguous, but the end result is easy: the brewery is telling you their sake is elevated, they took care in making it, and you should notice and drink it! Guy Michel & Fils Paris Foiles Vinothèque Millésime 2002 Brut Magnum Champagne The grower Guy Michel from #pierry does have an impressive portfolio of older, great value late disgorgement vintages in excellent condition. Medium/deep golden hue and loads of tiny bubbles. Elegant, pure, floral and primary smell. A bit shy initially but opens on nicely in the glass after aeration with a smorgasbord of aromas like apple skin, citrus fruits / sweet grapefruit, red/blackcurrants, juicy yellow tropical fruits like pineapples and tangerines, subtle wild strawberries, baked pear, elderberries, pickled ginger, a fine layer of chalk and crushed rocks. Sensual mouthfeel with delicately soft mousse and good tension. Not heavy, not light. So harmonious yet refreshingly energetic and complex. Medium/light bodied with nice depth, structure and roundness. High vintage typical acidity. Persistent and dry yet silky-smooth, fruity finish. Outstanding length. Candied citrus fruits / key lime pie, some pickled ginger, chalk and crispy minerality. Needs plenty of time in the glass to open up. This 20+ years young late disgorgement 2002 #magnumchampagne is still a baby but oh so yummy already.
