. . About yesterday's 2012 vs 2013 champagne bonanza. . It was confirmed that I like 2013 better and so did the majority. This decision was taken blind, as one didn't know which vintage was in which glass. It was surprisingly easy to tell as the vintages are clearly quite different and both with its charms. I only guessed wrong with Cristal and surprisingly Charles Heidsieck, which I probably know best of all the champagnes we had. The two Charlies were very similar, could be that the high dosage masks and uniforms those juices a bit? . Thanks @champagnerfreund.ch for putting up this great event and that surprise, intermediate Bollinger VVF 2013 and the Jéro LGA 2012. I was actually planning to have my first ever VVF next Wednesday and you kind of spoiled that moment in the best possible way. ;-) . 1962 LeRoy Grands Echezaux, at 62 years old. Most of the people who were involved in making this wine are gone. It’s humbling to think about. Not many of these bottles still exist and this one was still very exciting and alive. When in doubt…Always Champagne. Learned this lesson years ago from my Somm friend/wine mentor. It has stayed with me and has yet to steer me wrong! A couple nights ago I was inspired to grill seafood and opportunistically picked up tuna steaks and scallops (they both looked unusually good and fresh at the seafood counter). Their preparations were vastly different. Naturally, choosing a wine that suited both presented a momentary challenge. Abandoning the ideas of a red or white Burgundy or Aligoté, I looked around for a Billecarte Salmon Brut Rosé hoping I had one stashed away and instead found an Egly Ouriet NV Extra Brut Premier Cru ‘Les Vignes de Vrigny’ composed of 100% Pinot Meunier I had yet to try. At this moment, I remembered one other truth: Always Egly-Ouriet if you can come by one. This striking Champagne of pure Pinot Meunier having seen no oak, was crisp and fresh with deep citrus (lemon and orange) and almond notes and razor sharp acidity…satisfying the pairing role with both sesame-soy crusted seared tuna as well as scallops grilled in lemon, butter, and white wine. The grilled pineapple planks and Shanghai tips (baby Bok choy) also played remarkably well with the versatile champagne. The whimsical simultaneous sake exploration didn’t go far, as the one I chose to open didn’t offer enough acidity or intensity to stand up to the bold flavors on the plate or clear the palate between bites. It was clearly a distraction and not an enhancement. Worth a shot though. I’m just getting my head around which sakes I enjoy and with which foods. So far, wine is still holding a strong lead in most cases. Je pense que je fais partie des personnes qui préfèrent le Pinot d’autres régions que la Bourgogne. Bon, ça serait peut être mentir après avoir bu un très jolie Arnoux Lachaux hier. Le Noirien en patois bourguignon, le gros Noirien à Arbois mais plus connu sous le nom de Pinot Noir. C’est un cépage qui représente 2% de l’encépagement mondial, et qui doit son nom à la forme de la grappe qui ressemble à une « pomme de pin » et qui réalise certains des vins les plus chers du monde. C’est un cépage rouge, avec lequel on peut aussi faire du blanc. Je ne pense pas me tromper en mettant en valeur deux grands vignerons qui produisent des pépites à partir de ce fruit. @eglyouriet : un des plus beau coteaux d’Ambonnay. 100% pinot noir de ce village de la montagne de Reims, sur la côte des grands noirs. Le domaine a pris vie peu de temps après la seconde guerre mondiale avec 3 hectares et a aujourd’hui 12 hectares. C’est un vin qui vieillit très bien, confidentiel et qui vieillit une vingtaine de mois dans un fût vieilli d’un vin. @winebyfarr : Domaine situé au sud ouest de Melbourne, dans la région de Geelong. Gary Farr a créé son domaine en 1994, après avoir vinifié en Australie mais également en France sur 10 millésimes du Domaine Dujac. C’est un domaine familiale avec un vigneron qui a un peu révolutionné la façon de voir les vins australiens, et développé des cépages devenus de plus en plus connus dans leurs pays. Je parle aussi un peu de @arnoux_lachaux même si nous n’en avons pas encore sur carte. Domaine fondé en 1858 et exploité par Françoise Arnoux Lachaux et son fils Charles. Depuis l’arrivée de Charles en 2011 il a mit en place petit à petit un travail d’agriculture régénératrice, l’éco-pâturage, la biodynamie. Ai #printempsdechampagne merita una menzione questo momento. Il #tasting di trait d'union da #selosse si é aperto con un intervento di Gabriel Lepousez, neuroscenziato, dal titolo "l'interpretazione degli stimoli". Un intervento pari a quelli che ascolto da tanti anni sui bias cognitivi della finanza comportamentale, ma fatto invece sul gusto. Ha detto cose che ho sempre pensato e che anche a me avete sentito dire dicendo semplicemente "come abbiamo le illusioni ottiche su un senso così sviluppato come la vista, figuratevi a livello di gusto che cantonate possiamo prendere". Lui peró ha messo giù un intervento perfetto e preciso e con precisi esempi citando molecole ed esperimenti. Un esempio: "prendete due bicchieri d'acqua con la stessa quantità di zucchero e in uno mettete l'aroma di vaniglia, poi chiedete quale é più dolce, tutti vi diranno quello con l'aroma di vaniglia". Lì ho capito il perché sapevo che funzionano benissimo i meunier base classici secchi e pas dosé, al gusto di torta di mele. Un sapore che ti accende l'infanzia nella testa, e ti fa percepire morbidezza e zucchero che in realtà non c'é. Lo zucchero é la cosa più buona del mondo ma la gente vuole lo zero in etichetta. E la torta di mele piace a tutti! Tenete quindi presente quando degustate voi o leggete delle note, che le illusioni gustative sono all'ordine del giorno. E figurati... tutto questo senza tirare in ballo il concetto del brand della bottiglia. Tra calice, altri vini a lato e abbinamento cibo, la vostra percezione e giudizio del vino puó essere completamente stravolta. Was in Washington DC for work. Got to see cherry blossoms. Also drank some wine. Off the list @albiwashdc was the 2012 Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Millesime. Very lean and ginger snappy. Lots of spice / anise flavors. Acid driven but not fruit apparent. I’d probably keep my hands off any bottles for the time being to see where it goes. 2013 Cedric Bouchard Creux D’enfer: juicy juicy juicy. Oceanspray bottle popped and poured with vibrant tiny bubbles that bring that sparkle. All about that cran-do attitude. Very open and giving right now. When you die (like I just did) and St. Peters lets you pass through the pearly gates of Heaven, I hope he is there with a bottle of Jacques Selosse Rose. Those of you who know me personally know I prefer my Rose de Saignee, but this assemblage is the best damn Rose I’ve had. Period. Lunch tasting menu at the Selosse Temple made it easy for me to just focus on the Champagne. *credit to Egly Ouriet for providing the GC grapes for this bottling. I was in great hands with Chef Stephane and Host Nathalie who made the experience extra special while at the Selosse Temple. Ex tempore wines with a friend on Saturday evening. I was reading at home 10.30 pm whe I got a message from a friend if I might be interested to taste something. So we ended up tasting these two wines first Pierre Peters at Bronda and then Egly-Ouriet at Luovuus Kukkii kaaoksesta.. Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Extra Brut deg 7/2022 Red Fruits, toastiness, Saline, Apple, lemon, coffee and hint of orange. Very good wine with long finish Pierre Peters Les Chetillons 2016 Green apple, saline, lemon, orange, white flowers, white peach, lemon peel, creaminess and almonds. Throw back to one of the most entertaining tastings of the year, where all the bottles performed well, with maybe the exception of Jules Brochet’s. In general for me the Chardonnays were a step above the rest, only surpassed by Cedric Bouchard’s Val Vilaine 20, my wotn, with its beautiful vinosity and a mouth-watering, fresh, tropical profile of lychee and guava. Parmantier and Dhondt Grellet were stellar, the ‘Caquerays’ a bit wilder, ‘Le Bateau’ showing more elegance and richness. Unexpectedly, among the Meuniers, most people (including me) seemed to prefer ‘Les Vignes de Vrigny’ to the ‘Beguines’ - both 18s, but E-O more precise and fresher in this hot vintage.
A birthday celebration for one of the busiest guys I know in the world. As such, we made sure to consume volumes.. I couldn't squeeze the far right bottle of sake in the frame, but the 2 champagnes were delicious. I must have been in a celebratory mode to realise I wasn't allergic to champagne after all. The Krug 170 was spot on.. with a decent proportion of wine coming from reserve wines, as well as inclusion of a wider range of vintages meant that this was already ready for action despite the youthfulness. 2010 Leflaive was blinded as a Meursault, with its rounded fruit and greater initial power on the palate, so we were surprised to find that it was a PM instead.. drinking well, but quite chunky for me. The 2017 was at peak performance tonight. It would have been my 4th time with this particular wine over the past few years, but none have been as expressive, delicate and wavering as this bottle. Violet, plum, strawberries finished with a nice cinnamon spice finish that has eternal momentum, showing more dramatics than the last time tasting just a few months earlier... utterly beautiful ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - 久保田萬寿 無濾過生原酒 - Egly-Ouriet V.P. Druvor: Antagligen runt 70% Pinot Noir samt 30% Chardonnay från Grand Cru-byarna Ambonnay, Bouzy och Verzenay. 20% av vinet har legat på ek. Basår 2016. Dosage: 1g/l. Deg: Dec 2021. En lätt oxiderad och fruktig doft av citrus, hav, äpplen, tropisk frukt och brioche. Smaken är friskt och generös med toner av citrus, mineral, plommon, vanilj och persika. Syran är hög och finishen lång. Ovanligt tydlig ton av mineral inte heller samma tillgängligt och omfamnade frukt som man är van vid. Mycket trevlig men den behöver nog ligga ett tag till.
