Do you like to get creative? Whether that’s making cartoons, furniture, pottery, prints or clothes? Then Join our Crafty Corner! 🧵🎨✂️ This Thursday, May 16th, we’ll be joined by our regular Crafty Corner attendee and museum volunteer Vanda, who will be teaching us how to make our own resin jewellery! Vanda has been making resin art for the past two years after attending a workshop at the Wai Yin Society Welcome Centre in Cheetham Hill. We will be using dried flowers, glitter and inks to decorate our jewellery, and we’ll look at some of the beautiful jewellery we have in our collection for inspiration. This group is open to anyone over the age of 18, and to all identities, backgrounds, and cultures. Don’t worry if this is your first-time making crafts, we welcome beginners and seasoned pros – and believe in the power of supporting one another in getting creative! Book tickets through our website 🎟️ #craftycorner #resin #resinart #resinartwork #resinjewelry #museum #jewishmuseum #manchesterjewishmuseum #community #cheethamhill

We had an amazing time last night with 10cc’s Graham Gouldman and Ian Hornal performing live in our 150 year old synagogue 😍 The recent months have been challenging for everyone in our communities, including ourselves here at the museum with insecurity and tensions being on the rise. But last night was all about coming together and connecting through music and we’d like to thank each and everyone of our guests who came to support our fundraiser. Huge thanks to Graham and Ian for bringing their amazing music to our synagogue and supporting our museum. ❤️ It is your support that enables us to continue our work of making connections and celebrating both, our similarities and differences, and we think it’s needed now more than ever before. Today we went to the Manchester Jewish Museum which is inside the first Sephardi synagogue in Manchester which was opened on the 6 May 1874. It is beautiful, and shows so many stories of Jewish people moving from Iraq, Greece and Portugal to Manchester and integrating themselves into British life. The synagogue itself is beautiful and the guide inside told us some of the history of the people who used to worship there. Today is Holocaust memorial day and I want to remember what happened to so many innocent people then and is still happening today #manchesterjewishmuseum #holocaustmemorialday #jewishhistory #history

It has also supported her to learn new printing techniques to enable her to print a selection of these archival documents and photographs onto fabric. Laura is now at the exciting stage in her project where she’s experimenting with the prints she created. Over the next two months she’ll be spending some time at the museum, sitting in the Ladies Gallery embroidering into her pieces. 🧵 You can meet her today as well as on Sunday 4th Feb, Wednesday 21st Feb and Wednesday 28th Feb. 📣Join us on Sunday, 28 January as we open our museum doors for free to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. 👐 Our full day programme of events was co-curated with The Creative Activists, a group of people aged 18-25, who are seeking to create powerful acts of sharing and connection with their local communities to help make a positive difference in the world. Over the past few months, the group has been exploring the Holocaust histories in our collection and reflecting creatively on Holocaust Memorial Day’s theme, ‘the fragility of freedom’. Come and see the Creative Activists’ new temporary exhibition, which explores stories of displacement. Take part in creative activities, including zine-making and contribute to art installations. You will also get a chance to explore our 1874 Spanish and Portuguese synagogue and museum galleries and enjoy new dishes from our vegetarian Cafe, inspired by stories from our collection. As part of the Open Day, you will also get an opportunity to see “I Say British, You Say Jewish”, The National Holocaust Centre and Museum’s touring exhibition, tracing historical and contemporary forms of anti-semitism and prejudice, as well as exploring and celebrating diverse, contemporary Jewishness. 📣 We are over the moon to announce that on Thursday, 15 February the museum will welcome one of Britain’s most successful song-writers, Graham Gouldman for an unforgettable evening of musical joy! 🎤 Graham Gouldman rose to early fame as a member of 1960s band The Mockingbirds. But by the time the group disbanded in 1966, Graham’s ability as a songsmith had moved centre stage, with hits for Wayne Fontana, Herman’s Hermits, The Yardbirds, The Hollies and Jeff Beck. After a spell song-writing in the United States, he returned to the UK and co-founded 10cc in 1972, co-writing a string of hits such as Rubber Bullets, I’m Not In Love, The Things We Do for Love and Dreadlock Holiday. And now, Graham is coming to Manchester Jewish Museum for an evening of musical joy with a rich repertoire of his best songs. After the concert, he will be joined by our curator Alex Cropper, for a conversation about growing up and making music in Manchester. 👀 As part of the evening event, all guests will also receive a welcome drink and Sephardi mezze plate from our award-winning café. There will also be an opportunity to meet Graham after the show and have your photograph taken with the artist. 🥂📸 Book tickets through the link in our bio 🎫 #10cc #grahamgouldman #manchestergigs #manchesterjewishmuseum #jewishmusic #jewishmuseum #whatsoninmanchester #manchester #music

📣 Our Chanukah Appeal: Help us continue bringing people together 📣 On behalf of the whole museum team, we’d like to wish you a peaceful holiday season and a happy Chanukah. Your support in these difficult times has been more important than ever. The recent tragic events in Israel and Gaza have shocked and impacted everyone in our communities, including ourselves here at the museum. Recent weeks have seen fewer people coming through our doors, with November being our quietest month this year. Concern from parents has seen many schools cancel their planned visits, which has had a significant impact on our income. Despite these challenges, we continue to create opportunities for people to come together to explore their similarities and differences and to allow much needed dialogue. A wonderful example of this was our Cheetham Fest Open Day in October. We opened our doors for anyone to visit the museum for free as part of Cheetham Cultural Festival. Our Synagogue Nights shows have gone ahead as planned and were described as “uplifting”, “communal” and “something positive to enjoy at a troubling time for many”. We believe that our work is needed now more than ever, but we need your help. Together we can make a change. We would like to thank you for your continued support. As a registered charity, we rely on the generosity of our members, supporters and partners to be able to bring our work to life. Your support means we can share the stories of Jewish Manchester with the world and bring communities together, spreading the message of peace and unity in diversity. If you would like to support our work, please consider making an online donation or becoming an MJM Member. OUR SYNAGOGUE TURNS 150 YEARS OLD 🕍⏳ 2024 will be a very special year for all of us at the museum. Our Spanish and Portuguese synagogue turns 150 years old and we’ll be celebrating with an exciting programme of events, a new temporary exhibition and a new menu in our vegetarian Cafe. Your support means we’ll able to welcome even more people through our doors and share this special moment with all of our communities. #chanukah #hanukkah #support #manchesterjewishmuseum #jewishmuseum

📣 Have you heard about our Sabbath specials? Sabbath, the Jewish day of rest, begins on Friday at sunset and ends on the following evening after nightfall. It's a time of gatherings, prayer, song and food. Every Saturday, we invite our visitors to experience the essence of Sabbath through textile and sound installations and some tasty specials in our Cafe! 🎧"Take A Load Off" is a sound installation created from oral history clips in the museum’s collection of interviews with Jewish Mancunians talking about their meanings, memories and sensations of Sabbath. It's displayed in our museum's Cafe every Saturday, so grab a pair of headphones and enjoy the stories as you wait for your food. 🧵Inspired by the sound installation, our museum Textile Group has crafted a beautiful textile triptych—a visual representation of some of the themes, colors, and images explored in the audio piece. 🥄Lastly, be sure to try the (Not) Chicken Soup, our vegetarian take on the Jewish Sabbath classic.
