Today’s Creature Feature Friday highlights the beautiful Vermilion Star (Mediaster aequalis)! ⭐️ The Vermilion Star quite simply gets its name from the bright vermilion colour they can come in! They are often found in rocky habitats from the low intertidal zone down to 500 m. Vermillion stars have diverse diets that change with the seasons - they will eat bryozoans, sea sponges, sea pens, loose algae, and even detritus! 🍽️🍽️ 👀🔍 Be sure to take a close look at the pattern on the Vermilion Star! You can see the oval shaped calcareous ossicles that cover the surface of the sea star. First set of seabirds! ⬇️ (But definitely not the last) The Alcidae family includes the auks, puffins, and murres. Many of the birds in this family are black and white and stand upright, making them look kind of like penguins. Like penguins, they are very good divers and swimmers, but unlike penguins, they can fly. Only one species of auk, the Great Auk, was flightless and it sadly went extinct in 1944 after being hunted to extinction by humans; who hunted them for feathers, meat, fat and oil. With only 23 species, this small family of sea birds can be found throughout the seas of the Northern Hemisphere. Most species, like the Guillemot (bottom left) and Razor-bill (top middle), are dark on top and commonly white below, which acts as a kind of camouflage called counter shading. However, some auks, such as the Puffin (bottom right) have colourful beaks, tufts, or crests. Auks are also pelagic birds, spending the majority of their adult life on the open sea looking for fish, coming ashore only for breeding. And when they do return to land, they do so in extraordinary numbers, forming colonies of thousands to millions of individuals!! And they are monogamous which means they breed for life. Imagine being at sea all year and coming back to a place packed with 1,000,000 other bird and still be able to find your partner! Remarkable! Whales 🐋 When it comes to eating, whales will either be baleen whales or toothed whales. Baleen can be seen in the image on the right, and this is how these whales catch their food. The bristles of the baleen are made from keratin and act as a sieve to allow the whales to filter out the krill and plankton from the seawater for them to eat. The large bone seen above is a rib bone from a Southern Right Whale. Our education programs and student involvement are getting more and more recognised and popular. It couldn't make us prouder being involved in teaching marine science, conservation, eco-tourism, and so much more. Whilst some schools and colleges are taking part in programs relevant to their curriculum, others are sending individual students for work placements and work experience courses. It was definitely one of those "tough days in the office"!!! Fantastic day taking some of my students to the beach to learn about marine conservation and marine species diversity! Taking young people into unfamiliar environments and seeing them learn, develop, and 'seeing the penny drop' is one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching. It’s Creature Feature Friday! Today we are talking about the largest species of moonsnail found along the Central Coast of BC - the Lewis’s Moonsnail (Neverita lewisii)! 🌕🐌 The Lewis’s Moonsnail likes to live in the sandy beaches of our intertidal and subtidal zones (up to 50 m). These moonsnails can grow quite large and their shells can measure up to 14 cm wide! However, this shell can sometimes appear small in comparison to the large, slimy, grey foot that often extends over top of it.🦶🏼🐚 Some sea snail species are herbivorous, but the Lewis’s Moonsnail is a carnivorous species that preys on clams and other bivalves! The moonsnail begins by trapping a clam with its large foot. It then uses its radula (a specialised feeding structure) to drill a hole in the clam shell. Finally, the moonsnail extends its proboscis through the hole to suck up all the clam meat. FUN FACT FRIDAY: Seal vs Sea lion All though they look somewhat similar there are quite a few differences between seals and sea lions. Both seals and seals lions are from the suborder Pinnipedia which means flipper-footed. In this suborder there are 3 families: Odobenidae: walruses Otariidae: sea lions & fur seals Phocidae: true seals Here are some major differences between the true seals and the sea lions/fur seal. Seals: Ears - ear holes Flippers - short front flippers used for maneuvering and large webbed back flippers used for propulsion. (Both front and hind flippers have claws) Physique - a bit on the rounder side, making it a little harder to move around on land. But they are still very well adapted to move underwater. Moving out of water - On land they are very well known for flopping along on their bellies, which is called galumphing! Since they have such short front flippers they don’t really reach the ground so they have resorted to the abordable flopping and bouncing. Swimming - Seals mainly use their large hind flippers to propel them selves in the water. They do so be moving in a side to side motion as their webbed flippers open and close. Sea lion/ fur seals: Ears - external ear flap Flippers - long and broad front flippers used for propulsion through the water. They have shorted back flippers used mainly for maneuvering. (Only back flippers are clawed) Physique - Lean and slick bodies, perfect for fast swimming and agility underwater. Moving out of water - Their flippers are big and strong enough that they can hold their body up when out of the water which is how they can kind of walk and run to some extent. Swimming - sea lions use their front flippers to gain speed by stretching their flippers out to the sides and sweeps them down which is called a clap. 👩🏫 FUN FACT FRIDAY - The Great Southern Reef! We have a special post for you today. The Great Southern Reef is known as Australia's 'forgotten reef,' even though it spans half our coastline. Check out @greatsouthernreef for educator resources and detailed information. 🤯 The Great Southern Reef spans 8000km from the NSW/QLD border to Kalbarri, WA 📚 The presence of seaweeds and golden kelp are defining characteristics of the GSR. The reef was given an official name by UWA scientists in 2016, in hopes that it would bolster awareness 🤯 70% of Australians live within 50km of the GSR. Despite this staggering statistic, there is limited public knowledge about this wild and significant environment 📚 It is a biodiversity hotspot - with many endemic species found nowhere else in the world 🤯 Some of the marine life found in the temperate waters of the GSR includes: three species of seadragon, over 730 species of fish, molluscs (like cuttlefish and octopus), echinoderms (sea stars and sea cucumbers), sponges, crustaceans, corals and seaweeds 📚 It is estimated that 95% of the Tasmanian kelp forests have been decimated. Conservation efforts to restore and revive this environment are underway 🤯 Sylvia Earle declared the GSR a 'hope spot.' Cuvier’s Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris) ⬇️ Cuvier’s beaked whales, sometimes called “goose-beaked whales,” are members of the beaked whale family. All beaked whales are pretty elusive creature and don’t spend much time on the surface making it hard to study them. However Cuvier’s beaked whales are one of the most frequently sighted species of beaked whales in the world. Cuvier’s beaked whales can be found in temperate, subtropical, and tropical waters. They prefer deep pelagic waters (usually greater than 3,300 feet) of the continental slope and edge which provided them with plenty of feeding opportunities in the deep. Like other beaked whale species, male individuals have two small cone-shaped teeth erupting out of the tip of the bottom jaw that are often used for fighting. A Cuvier’s beaked whale’s color can vary greatly from dark gray to a reddish-brown, with a paler counter-shaded underside. The reddish-brown or orange-yellow coloration is caused by the presence of microscopic diatoms and algae on their skin. Their body is also often covered with scratches and oval-shaped scars. The oval-shaped scars are most likely caused by of cookie-cutter sharks and the scratches are from fighting with others individuals and squid. Beaked whales are also one of the deepest diving marine mammals ever recorded. Cuvier’s beaked whales can dive up to 3,300 feet for 20 to 40 minutes to feed on mostly cephalopods like squid and octopus. To help them eat these slippery soft bodied animals they have a pair of ventral throat grooves that help to create a vacuum within their mouths,so they can suck up their prey. The deepest known dive for a Cuvier’s beaked whale was 9,816 feet which is nearly 2 miles!!
