Twin brother and sister getting some cake in this portrait I drew a couple of months ago. It was commissioned as a baptism gift for them and their parents by their aunt. The twins were born in the UK during lock down and covid and are only getting baptised this year. My client wanted a special gift to give them for such an occasion. The drawing is based on one photograph which I simplified by removing some unnecessary elements to keep the focus on the children. I was recently asked which is better: Faber Castell's Pitt Graphite Matt or Staedtler's Mars Lumograph Black pencils. And I was adamant that it was the Pitt Matt Graphite HOWEVER, I just tested the two against each other and I was shocked!! 😳 I put the 8B of both pencil sets next to each other and found that the 8B of the Pitt pencils was lighter than the 8B of the Staedtler pencils 😬 (in fact the 8B Staedtler was just as dark as the 14B Pitt Matt pencil!) I also placed a light evenly over the 2 patches and found that the Pitt Matt graphite pencils reflected the light more than the Staedtler pencils as the viewing angle was decreased (this is supposedly the Pitt pencils unique selling point 🤦♂️) Now, it isn't sounding very good for Faber Castell's Pitt Graphite Matt BUT, they do not claim to be black lead pencils, like the Lumograph Blacks, instead as an upgrade to standard graphite pencils (which they certainly are). Mixed media on 150gsm sketchbook paper I started with a light graphite sketch, which I went over with Mars Lumograph Black pencil. I then added Windsor and Newton watercolours, Caran D'ache Luminance pencils, Conté À Paris pastels and lastly Windsor and Newton acrylic, mostly for texture. I love the gold highlights in the hair and eyes, and the iridescent green blue paint by Pébéo I used for the background is simply divine 😍🤤 The photos really don't do it justice 🙄 Slide 3 shows the reference photo I used. "Baby Anna with her grandparents" is one of the pencil portraits I drew before Christmas last. It was commissioned as a gift for Anna's dad whose parents are in the picture. They sadly passed away and cannot spend time with their beautiful granddaughter. The client, Anna's mum, wanted them portrayed as if looking over her. The drawing is 20 x 30 cm in size, drawn with graphite pencil on paper.
