Slaters Bridge in Little Langdale, love this bridge! Slaters Bridge is a delightful 17th Century packhorse bridge spanning the River Brathay. Historically Little Langdale was at the intersection of packhorse routes leading across to to Ravenglass and the Cumbrian coast, as well as Keswick and Penrith in the North Lakes, and Ulverston, Broughton-in-Furness and Barrow in Furness to the south. These routes would carry slate from the mines found around Coniston and Tilberthwaite. The remains of the mines have left an ever lasting impact on the local environment, but allow visitors to see first hand, the scale of the historic mining operations in the area. .... .... .... .... #slatersbridge #littlelangdale #lakedistrict #bridge #packhorsebridge your_bridges #your_bridges #cumbria #theperfectplacetobe #igerscumbria_april #yes_explore #ordnancesurvey

Fifehead Neville. Explore the little villages of the Fifeheads. Discover a giant mausoleum in the churchyard and the pack horse bridge over the River Devilish (one of only a few surviving in the county). Pass the site of one of Dorset’s most impressive Roman villas, which has unearthed Roman jewellery, elegant stone columns and elaborate mosaics. The Packhorse bridge in Fifehead Neville is one of only a small number of surviving medieval packhorse bridges in Dorset (others can be found at Rampisham, Tarrant Monkton, Gussage St Micheal, Corfe Castle, Holwell and Sturminster Marshall). The bridge was constructed approximately 800 years ago, in about 1200, and is 6ft (1.83m) wide with two distinctive pointed arches 6ft (1.83m) tall. It is a neatly-made structure and very well built, still standing strong today. Its form, without the wooden parapets, illustrates clearly how the bridge allowed laden pack animals to cross without obstruction, before transport of goods by cart became the norm. Places Tuesday. Ladybower Reservoir was built between 1935-1943 by the Derwent Valley Water Board in order to provide water for people in the East Midlands. The place chosen was in a valley but required the flooding of DERWENT VILLAGE, UK. Ten homes were sacrificed from a village which was situated on the crossing of the river on the road from Sheffield to Manchester. The villagers were instructed to leave their homes and they were rehoused in newly built properties 2 miles away as the reservoir began to flood and was almost full by 1944. There was a 17th century packhorse bridge with a preservation order on it and that was resituated close by. The village church, called St. John and St. James, which had been built in 1757 had its last service on 17/03/47 before it was submerged along with its spire, until 1947 when it was blown up due to health and safety concerns regarding the tall structure. Bodies from the graveyard had been exhumed in 1940 and were reburied at another nearby church. Derwent Hall (pic included) had been built in 1672, replacing an earlier hall, a most impressive property, also succumbed to the flooding and it was demolished in 1944, after it had served as a youth hostel opened by the Prince of Wales. Most of the buildings had been demolished prior to the flooding but there still remain 5 properties which were part of the village but built on higher ground, including the village school/hall. A fabulous place to explore, so beautiful, but can get quite busy with tourists. #derwentvillage #ladybowerreservoir #ladybower #reservoir #derwent #eastmidlands #places #tuesday #buildinghistory #travelblogger #flooded #valley #water #sacrificed #homes #blownup #spire #churchspire #leave #homes #floodedvillage #packhorsebridge #preservation #healthandsafety #graveyard #exhumed #reburied #youthhostel #derwenthall #princeofwales #highground

Old bridges of Scotland. There are some amazing, old bridges around the Highlands, particularly up in the Speyside region. Photos 1-3 show the Old Bridge of Avon at Ballindalloch. It was built in 1800 and remained in service until 1991. The new bridge that replaced it can be seen fully in Photo 2. Photos 4 & 5 are the old Packhorse Bridge, near the Glenlivet Distillery. Believed to have been built in the mid-1600’s, it was largely damaged and deemed unsafe after high floodwaters took their toll in 1829. Photo 6 is Thomas Telford’s cast-iron Craigellachie Bridge. Completed in 1814, it was in service until 1974, by which time it was deemed unsuitable to support the increasingly heavy truck loads. It is still open to pedestrians today… . . . . . #europetrip #bridges #scotland #structuralengineering #speyside #bridge #thomastelford #packhorsebridge #avon #ballindalloch #oldbridgeofavon #construction #rivercrossing

So many place names in the Lake District give you a clue to what it used to be like over 1,000 years ago. Some more pictures from Northbeck bridge. No one is quite sure when the bridge was built, or who it was built by. Given it's on the route, and approximate midway point, between Sempringham Abbey and Haverholme priory, some have suggested the bridge was constructed by monks as early as 1250, although the bridge itself is believed to most likely date from the 17th Century given it's construction. This may be more likely given that the surrounding estate was purchased in 1612 by Mr George Gibson, who went on to make many improvements to the land and roads in the area. Northbeck bridge was a fascinating find out of the blue and, with safe parking and a green area across the bridge, it's a lovely place to spend half an hour, have an explore and sit and relax as you admire the views across the fields. #haiku #poetry #ukexplore #explore #visituk #sacredsites #wildplaces #vagabond #poetvagabond #packhorsebridge #northbeck #northbeckbridge #ruins #ukruins

Something a little different this week. Northbeck bridge was an accidental discovery as I drove through the small village of Northbeck on my way home from another adventure, but it was so intriguing I had to stop for a better look. Often referred to as Packhorse bridge, and also locally Roman bridge, both descriptions are technically incorrect. Despite being difficult to age, it is known that the bridge is much newer than the Roman era, and a traditional packhorse bridge was only wide enough to take a packhorse, but at nearly 3m wide, Northbeck can easily accommodate a wider horse and cart. To the South of the bridge there have been some remains found of a causeway, used as a ford before the road was built, and in the 1960s the road was widened and the river was deepened. The Lincolnshire river authority, who carried out the works, installed the large concrete blocks that can be seen in the pictures, to help protect the older bridge. Unfortunately, the deepening of the river also caused a drop in the water level. This resulted in subsidence of the bridge's foundations and some damage to the structure. This damage was finally repaired in 2004 by Lincolnshire County Council. A fascinating find and one I can't help but wonder about all the feet (and hooves) that have touched those cobbles across the centuries. So, after checking out Heckington Windmill, I went in search of a Packhorse Bridge as it was nearby. As it happens, even though it's called Northbeck Packhorse Bridge on Google Maps, it isn't actually thought to be one due to it being wide enough for a cart. Packhorse bridges are only as wide as a horse, or so the information board said that I stood there and read. Anyway, it's thought that this structure dates back to ether the 16th or 17th century, and somehow, in the 1960s, they managed to dig the stream out deaper that runs beneath it and build new concrete foundations for the Bridge, without damaging it. . I have no idea why I find this shit interesting. 🤣 #packhorsebridge #historicbridge #triumphsprint1050 #Triumph #linconshire #northbeckpackhorsebridge

I had intended to make a daily picture of, or at, the ford, but it’s been several days now since I last managed to do one, and there’s been quite a change: just today it’s become possible to walk across the ford for the first time in weeks, despite today’s squally showers. The Wellow Brook does not have a huge catchment area: It rises in the Mendip Hills, near Chew Lake; it joins the Somer (which has risen in the southern part of Mendip, near Shepton) at Radstock. But with the steepness of those hills, it quickly builds up to flood after a downpour, then subsides again fairly rapidly. Meanwhile, spring advances. * #somerset #springtime #ford #winter #flooding #climatechange #globalwarming #globalheating #ruralism #dailyphoto #landscape #flakphoto #newtopographics #fotoruralism #thisaintartschool #wellowbrook #paradox #countrysideparadox #anotherdayanotherdeluge #sheepdip #packhorsebridge #pollarded #pollarding #willows

I had a wonderful bimble around the East Dartmoor Woods and Heaths NNR yesterday, a very special place. From the damp, green mossiness of the Bovey valley to sunny yellow gorse (and actual sunshine!) on the ridge between Hunters Tor and Sharpitor. The woods were bursting with birds and birdsong. Hearing cheerful chiffchaffs (spring!), warbling blackcaps and wistful mistle thrushes was especially uplifting. I watched this nuthatch repeatedly visit a woodland garden to take pieces of peeling, papery bark for lining its nest in a nearby tree. And I was happy to be shouted at by wrens. The ‘ford’ appears to be slowly turning into a weir: with the heavy rains, a lot of silt and gravel has now backed up behind the upstream face, making the pool between the road and the bridge quite shallow now in places - it could probably do with a dredging of some sort as water levels are quite low now (relatively-speaking) and yet there is still a shallow, slippery layer running across the top of the ford. A grey VW crossed one way, followed by a Nissan truck the other, then a party of 15 or so young people on Ten Tors training - all bar a couple chose to get their feet wet(ter)by spurning the available bridge! * #somerset #springtime #ford #winter #flooding #climatechange #globalwarming #globalheating #ruralism #dailyphoto #landscape #flakphoto #newtopographics #fotoruralism #thisaintartschool #wellowbrook #paradox #countrysideparadox #anotherdayanotherdeluge #sheepdip #packhorsebridge #tentors
