My second and final entry for #sewaprilblouse24 - a wearable toile of Deer and Doe's Mélilot shirt. This is View B, which has short sleeves and a band collar. The concealed buttonhole placket - technically part of View A - came together really simply, just involved a bit of concertina-like folding. Lack of opportunity to showcase any beautiful buttons on this occasion made up for by avoidance of buttonhole stress! I've got plans for more of these as this short sleeve version is really economical with fabric, great for smaller remnants. Here is my version of the Melilot shirt/blouse by Deer & Doe. Melilot is such a great pattern. It has lovely elements like the curved hem, dropped shoulder short sleeves, and adorable rounded collar. Due to the small floral pattern on this fabric, some of the features, like the pockets are not as visible, or perhaps the photos don't do them justice. Despite being a casual shirt, it is slightly tailored at the waist and with its deep curved hemline it creates a beautiful shape when worn untucked. The hem turned out to be quite lengthy though, so I might shorten the lenght a little bit next time. Otherwise, I think this is one of my favorite patterns. Following my last post, this is my second @tulapink Besties shirt. This time I made the @deer_and_doe_patterns Mélilot shirt in the short-sleeved version with the hidden placket (size 6, shortened by 1.5”). I wore my blue/white version earlier this week and it helped me to decide it was the pattern for this fabric. Okay, so I’m not 100% happy with the pattern placement. I spent a lot of time thinking about the cutting layout 🤔 I couldn’t quite remember how the hidden placket was constructed and so I thought there’d be more of a gap between the dogs at the centre (I did suspect that I might end up with partial faces). I’m happy that I managed to successfully fussy-cut the collar so that it has a poodle on it! 🐩 (see 3rd image). I know it’s cliche to say it, but it feels like the year is rushing by and I can’t quite believe we’re nearly at the end of February. Working at a university means that semester time is a bit of a rush of meetings about teaching, prepping my teaching materials, teaching students, and meeting with students. There’s a sweet spot that I’m just hitting now in week 4 of semester where I feel like I’ve got a steady rhythm and am really enjoying the level of intellectual stimulation (though I’d still happily attend fewer meetings!). My work wardrobe is fluctuating a bit at the moment as a result - on days like today that are packed with meetings I tend to dress in slightly less dressy me made outfits, whereas I try to dress up a bit more on lecture days (I superstitiously feel like I lecture better when I do!). Finally posting January 24 makes. A #camdenskirt in left over corduroy from my stash and a #sagebrushtop made from fabric remnant that I succumbed to on a trip to #goldhawkroad in December -with @surreysews and @londonstitchersmeetup . Sagebrush top, seen here under several layers,is made from a viscous twill which is surprisingly warm but I did reduce the volume of the sleeves. This was my personal preference but suited the limited quantity of fabric but they still threaten to dwarf me😂. I was glad my skirt could be worn with a previously made #melilotshirt. Hi all! Two posts in just a couple of days, I’m on a roll! This is a #melilotshirt from @deer_and_doe_patterns . I hacked it into a shirt dress, quite a nifty easy hack ( #magamniftynovember )! It took me forever to finish because I couldn’t figure out what buttons to use. Quite a ridiculous procrastination because I finally went with basic black buttons so as to not distract from the cool fabric. This dress is a bit out of season now, but I love this Japanese cotton from @boltfabricpdx so I just had to share. I think I can get away with wearing the dress in cooler temps if I do tights under and maybe add a cardigan. I do love this fabric! It doesn’t wrinkle at all! In honor of #worktober, I'm sharing the 10 new additions I made for my Fall work wardrobe. In hanging order: 1. #Heatherblazer from @FridayPatternCompany This coat is a very hacked version of the Heather Blazer. It was really tough to do any kind of pattern matching with the plaid. But because it's double-sided, it kind of takes on a life of its own. 2. #Melilotshirt from @Deer_and_Doe_Patterns I love this pattern company, but I didn't love this pattern - for me. I do like that it has some shaping and I like that it has a covered placket. But the grown-on sleeves compromise my mobility. 3. #PomonaPants from @annaallenclothing This pattern is one of my most used and I'm certainly getting my money's worth! I got this fabulous tencel twill from @MinervaFabrics. 4. #cassidywraptop from @Helens_Closet I love this pattern company, but I didn't love this pattern - for me. The instructions were wonderful. But I was hoping the wrap gap would stay closed and more modest for work. 5. #mitchelltrousers from @closetcorepatterns This was a fun pattern to make. It wasn't easy, but the instructions are great. I made both this butterscotch version and also an espresso brown version. (seen in pic #7) I'm not sure if the waistline is too high for me - for both comfort and flattery. 6. #rhapsodytop from @lovenotions Why haven't I made this yet? The fabric is a silky viscose from @MoodFabrics. 7. #tsrclassicpant from @thesewingrevival I'm crazy about this pattern! I don't have a great photo of them on my body. (pic #8) I love that they're a simple shape with slash pockets and the rise is perfect for me too. 8. #allineasyfitshirt from @patternemporium-kate I've made this pattern several times and thought it would be a no-brainer for a shirtdress. It was not a good pairing with this crisp Italian shirting. The back pleat poofed out and couldn't even be corralled nicely by a belt. So I cut it off and now have a cropped button up shirt. Meh. 9. #mallardcoat from @thesewingrevival I've been stalking this pattern for a long time. I'm glad I bought it. I love the jacket and I love the light blue lining SO much that I don't think I'll ever wear the sleeves unrolled!

So I made an outfit…. #talculottes in @tessutifabrics fantastic pebble wash linen (I think I have a rainbow of clothes in this linen) and #melilotshirt in deep deep stash ?quilting cotton…I had a small bit left to use for pocket lining and to face the hem to make the culottes a tiny bit longer. I don’t think I’ve worn culottes since I was a kid but it’s always good to have the option to be able to zip away on your motorbike/horse like the nun in Mrs Davis (my inspiration for my first pair which I haven’t revealed (or worn) yet…😉)

Ich hatte letzte Woche etwas Zeit und so hatte ich einen 'schlimmen' Nähanfall 😁 (zur Freude von @nutsaboutdiy : es gibt wieder etwas #nähcontent 🪡) Ich habe tatsächlich mehr genäht als in den vergangenen 5 Jahren... Im Vorfeld hatte ich meinen Stoffschrank inspiziert und geräumt und auch aussortiert. Ein paar Stoffe hatte ich gefunden, die ich auf jeden Fall noch für mich vernähen wollte! Als erstes sollte der Stoff verarbeitet werden, den ich letztes Jahr bei @stoffundseide gekauft habe. Da wusste ich schon beim Kauf, dass er ein #melilotshirt werden sollte. Ja, ist wahrscheinlich langweilig, aber im Sommer brauche ich nichts anderes und diesen Schnitt liebe ich einfach sehr 💚 und eine Bluse sieht halt auch immer gut aus. Another upcycling project just completed! I used a mid blue chambray from @dalston.mill.fabrics to toile a v neck dress a few months ago and didn’t like the pattern or the methods used in it. With a bit of piecing, w managed to salvage enough of the fabric to make a #gilberttop and I’m so glad I have. Really enjoying this easy to wear summer shirt with a cute tie front which is great paired with high waisted trousers. Excellent instructions and I enjoyed making it so much that I already have a version lined up from @hazzle.frazzle. I couldn’t resist the @kylieandthemachine label. Three things: the Peppermint slouch cardi, a saltwater slip/metamorphic dress hack and the Melilot shirt. The slouch cardi is a free pattern from Peppermint magazine and I made it with some unbrushed fleece. It’s so snuggly around the neck and it’s altogether like a snuggly cocoon for the winter. It’s more like a coat than a cardi but maybe it’s the fabric. This fabric feels almost coarse and I’m sure it will soften up over time. The Melilot shirt is a dream of a shirt. I made it without interfacing because I just really don’t like that stuff even though sometimes a garment really needs it. I’d rather have loose and lovely clothing. This fits great except for a bit of tit gape which is astounding - honestly I would have thought it would fit well but they’re clearly just very perky pets. This fabric is a bit more sheer than I had realised when I bought it online so the double pockets helps me avoid a bra in most cases. Here is my second Melilot shirt (pattern by @deer_and_doe_patterns), this time with long sleeves. These are my first cuffs with a sleeve placket and while this might seem super minor, I felt a truly accomplished when I managed to get then sewn. 🪡 Before sewing these I had not spent much time thinking about plackets, but they are constructed in a very cool slightly mind-boggling way that made me consciously notice all the plackets on my and other peoples clothing. My mod’d Melilot! This is made in awesome Lady McElroy lawn from @stonemountainfabric and buttons, too! I’ve hacked this pattern so much that I am searching for new patterns 🤣 it’s lengthened, with a very large FBA, and then an enlarged back piece to catch up. I know I’ve lost the balance, so planning a new button down next time, but love the simplicity of this pattern. I wrote a super long post griping about this me made outfit before Instagram froze on me, so lucky you - you get a shorter version 😂 The gist of it is I hate polyester and somehow ended up making these 2 pieces from poly and a poly blend. The blouse has been cut out waiting to be sewn since 2020 and the fabric for the pants have been sitting in my stash since circa 2008. These are both wearable toiles. I love the fit of the blouse and will be making more. The fabric was a poly nightmauand I almost flung the iron across the room in frustration when trying to press the fiddly points on the sleeve cuff placket. I love the details on the pants, but I think I need to lower the rise by about an once for them to fit better. I’m still not sure if the cigarette silhouette suits me because of my knock knees, but I’m not ready to give up on trying to nail the fit. Yet. All in all, lots of learning and using up stash fabric!
