🇺🇸 Photograph of the Metropolitan Museum on June 1st 1999: Opening of ‘GUSTAVE MOREAU: BETWEEN EPIC AND DREAM’ in commemoration of his death anniversary. On Wednesday the Met is closed to the public, so I enjoy visiting museums, galleries and private collections. Surprisingly, as I was visiting a private building, I spotted this b&w picture and by taking a close look of the banners, I could determine its year. Moreau’s famous exhibit at the MET came after the one at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. However, my focus today is on the granite steps that lead the visitors to the Great Hall of the Museum. Although most of us may believe that they have been there as an addition to the Museum's 1902 Fifth Avenue façade designed by Richard Morris Hunt, let me tell you that these steps were built in 1975, together with the two fountains and the planting of 76 trees beside them. The previous entrance was a narrow stairway leading to a wooden vestibule that was known as "the doghouse. As architectural critic Paul Goldberger noted, "There are some stairs in the city - like those in front of The Metropolitan Museum of Art - that are arguably more important urban events than the buildings to which they lead."
